@oscillator I think The Witcher 3 is quite open and vast-it's truly a marvel to explore all the cities and village-like areas, it's simply teeming with beauty. As for interaction, I think there is plenty to sink your teeth into and perhaps it's not always by following waypoints and markers where you will find the most fruitfulness. It's the sense the stories told within The Witcher 3 are diverse and built with the surroundings in mind that makes the game so enthralling. You namedropped Oblivion and Skyrim, which are quite limiting and rigid with interactions, whereas The Witcher flows wonderfully, I've seen no static encounters in the game. There are many stories and characters that give you a wide array of vibes. One character recommends that Geralt wipes his arse before a mission is to be undertaken, and Geralt's deadpan sense of humor offers plenty of unexpected chuckles. I think those who watch gameplay footage as opposed to experiencing it properly, won't find the excellent sense of humor and delicious shreds of sharply-written script so easily. Crass and shallow is quite a scathing remark to me, but I understand it would appear wooden at first. I think generally if you sit down and play The Witcher 3, hours and days will go by and the more you will see what the game is truly hiding underneath the surface. Many games of its ilk give you a huge open-world that is straightforward, soulless and checklisty.By comparison spending time with The Witcher 3 is akin to spending time getting to know your new partner-the quirks and idiosyncrasies become more apparent the more you know them.

I have a pair of games. Worms 3D and Worms: Open Warfare. The former was a complete reimagining that, while innovative, just didn't feel good to play. But if the classic 2D gameplay would also have new entries, hey, experiment away. But the latter took that classic 2D gameplay, and made the best parts of it - physics, art style, wry humor - flat out worse. The changes became the base of every 2D entry for the next 10 years until the most recent one, Worms WMD, brought back some of the old vibes, but halfheartedly.

@e_zed_eh_intern said in Is a long running story always a bad thing?: @sheria said in Is a long running story always a bad thing?: I think the understanding is you maybe go back and replay the previous ones if your memory is hazy. This of course this brings time into the equation, but both time and memory are really very personal issues that of course don't effect everyone. It's not just about time. Playing a game I've already played before and know everything that is going to happen is just tedious most of the time. Well I can't really agree there sorry. I personally love revisiting old favourites I've not played for a long time and I don't really think that's too uncommon. Thing is though, that was a response to when you've forgotten most of the game and it's story, so you wouldnt remember everything that is going to happen. 😊

@mbun I just played sunshine for the first time when All Stars came out. Was definitely worst then what I expecting and I went for it with low expectations. It's fine but it's the only Mario game I don't love. Some truly bad designed levels and sub par controls makes it impossible for me to put it above any 3D Mario. That's not to say that there isn't anything good about it, I still enjoyed it and it says a lot about a series when what I consider the worst game is still better than most in the genre.

@dipset I hope you enjoy it more than I did. Mind you I didn't play too much of, the thing I enjoyed most was its theme entitled "Everything Is Going to Be Ok".

My top 5: Ori and the Will of the Wisps/Psychonauts 2 Mostly perfect games for me, which is why I had them as my 2020 and 2021 GOTYs. From start to finish, I was continually impressed by everything these games did. I'm not ready to pick a favorite, lol. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2 I didn't think I would ever care about skateboarding games again but they actually did it. THPS 1+2 was exactly what it needed to be and I appreciate the restraint the developers showed by not changing too much of the classic THPS formula. RIP Vicarious Visions. The Last of Us Part II Naughty Dog is still the best when it comes creating enthralling story's and realistic characters. They are also one of the best in the industry when it comes to technical and sound design. The attention they give to every little detail of their games is insane. And the gameplay is better than TLOU 1. Demon's Souls/Elden Ring Both are great. Elden Ring is way more ambitious with it's excellent exploration focused open world. If it's performance would have been better for me on PC then I would probably just give it this spot. Demon's Souls on the other hand, is one of the most beautiful, well performing games I've ever played. I was wearing robes and casting spells but Bluepoint are the real wizards of that game. Honorable Mentions: DOOM Eternal Wasteland 3 Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales Desperados III Final Fantasy VII Remake Resident Evil: Village New Pokémon Snap Kena: Bridge of Spirits Before Your Eyes Pokémon Legends: Arceus

I find there's a tendency for people to mistrust someone's opinion on a game/film based on their opinions of other games/films. I'm pretty sure there are some people out there who will hate what Ryan McCaffrey thinks of a game based on his 5.9/10 score for Alien: Isolation.

I don't have anything off the top of my head, but stuff like this in general doesn't bother me nearly as much as it does for other people. For example, everyone complains about the waist high walls in TLOU signifying a combat section is incoming. That doesn't matter to me in the slightest. So I don't think this is a big issue for me most of the time. I recently just finished Halo 2 for the first time and for a game that is all about shooting bad alien guys endlessly for 10+ levels without taking the foot off the gas, I was surprised how deep in the weeds it got with geo-political sci-fi. Like, I don't how how to put it into words exactly. Halo 2 gameplay = "Yo let's hop on the Warthog lets go fuck these aliens up." Halo 2 story and cutscenes = You are a heretic for failing to stop the foreign rebellion against our ancient prophecies. Now we must recover ancient information from 343 Guilty Spark to uncover the truth about our past. blah blah blah I just seems like there is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much political minutiae for a game where you literally just drive around in alien vehicles and blow shit up or just run through waves upon waves of bad guys just shoot shoot shooting indiscriminately at everything in sight.
