    10. Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4 (incl. P4G) (2008) - 243 Points - 13 Votes - Highest Vote: #1 bard91

    Developer: Atlus
    Publisher: Atlus/Square Enix/ NIS America
    Genre: RPG
    Platform(s): PlayStation 2, PlayStation Vita

Recently, strange murders began to occur in the quiet Japanese town Inaba. People are found dead under mysterious circumstances, and rumors say that something very wrong is going on with local TV system. A high school student moves into town, living at the house of his uncle, a police detective named Ryotaro Dojima. Shortly after his arrival, a TV announcer is found dead, her body hanging on a TV antenna. A while later, the student who discovered the victim is found dead as well. The new student and his friends accidentally discover that a parallel world exists within the realm of television, populated by supernatural creatures known as Shadows. The young people also find out that their own Shadow Selves are able to grant them unique powers. They must travel into that mysterious world and find out who is responsible for the murders.

Persona 4 is a Japanese-style role-playing game with light social simulation elements, similar in concept to its predecessor. The player controls a party of characters who must solve the crimes by venturing into the TV world and exploring its dungeons. Each dungeon is associated with a potential victim and carries a unique theme; their layouts, however, are randomly generated. Enemies are visible on screen, and contact with them leads to turn-based battles, which heavily rely on exploiting enemy weaknesses and unleashing powerful attacks after having successfully knocked them down. As opposed to the previous game, the player can issue direct commands to the main character's companions during battles. Similarly to other Persona games, characters' abilities and attributes change by merging them with supernatural beings known as Personae, which can also be fused at special locations to create more powerful ones.

  • well were in the top 10

i must be in the minority that likes persona 3 more then 4

  • Persona 3 has the better setting and the better overall story arc, but the characters in Persona 4 blow the ones in P3 out of the water imo. They are both close, P4 gets the nod from me!

  • And Persona 4 is in the top 10! @bard91 defending their favorite game when I can't predict a thing. Also, counter to what I thought, a LOT of votes. And votes that are both ends of the spectrum: Either REALLY high, or just making it. It's something that I have no interest in but I'm... affirmed? reassured?... Nah, those don't work. Oh well. At least its a positive feeling Persona is in the top 10 of a EZA community list.

  • my predictions

    1.ocarina of time
    2.Final fantasy 7
    3.Last of Us
    4.Dark souls
    5.Mario 3

    1. mario
    2. San Andreas
    3. Witcher 3
    4. Metal Gear Solid

  • I was really hoping Persona 4 would take number one, even if I didn't pick it as my number one. I know that doesn't make a lot of sense, but I just want Ben to be proud of us.

  • @SabotageTheTruth i think one of ocarina of time,ff7 or last of us will be number 1

  • Persona 4 in the top 10 woot woot!

  • @FF7Cloud I hope for all of our sakes FF7 is the one that takes that honor.

  • @SabotageTheTruth it wasnt my no 1 on my list so hopefully it dosnt lose by like 1 point

  • @SabotageTheTruth @FF7Cloud I'm just happy it'll place high. And it'll place.

  • exhales

I guess that number ten is ... acceptable...

In all honesty I never had a doubt that we would see it on the list, it was just a matter of seeing where we would see it, and while I hoped it would be a little higher, just seeing the games that come right before it (and the ones that are probably coming), and considering that Persona really is dwarfed when compared to the other games that are near the top, in terms of brand recognition, I can't really underestimate the fact that this is a great position for it on the list.

Now I can only hope that what some have said is true, and P5 is a better game, and that come february you heathens and non believers will wake up to the glory that is Persona!!!

Until then I guess I'll take the highest "small" game on the list.

  • 11. Chrono Trigger

What a game! Extremely fun combat system, the double and triple techs are spectacular and satisfying, and the fact you can avoid enemies in the world makes it refreshing as opposed to random encounters.

The story and characters were very involving and delivered some truly emotional moments. The character design... what beautiful sprites (Akira Toriyama FTW)! The soundtrack is up there with the very best Final Fantasy ones.

I've never had the chance to play Chrono Cross but I heard many good things about it, does anyone here have thoughts to share about that one?

Cross will forever be one of my greatest disappointments.

  • Cross has one of the best soundtracks ever but the game it self is dissipointing

  • @FF7Cloud I love P3 nearly as much as I do P4, but to me the big thing that it has going on against it, is that in has a lot of things that simply don't work well, even with the different improvements done in the different versions.

Some of the s links are terrible, pacing is horrible at times, Tartarus can be torture, and the Answer while cool is something I don't ever want to go through again. So even though there's a lot that I love from the game, I can't overlook its problems, and it is because of that it is only fourth on my list, since I can't put it over Nier or Paper Please in good conscience, even if I prefer it over those games.

Now if there were to be a remake, where they can fix this issues, then I might just put it over P4.

  • What in the... Only nine spots left, and I'm still waiting for like five of my games to appear. Could they all really make it?

    To be clear:
    Final Fantasy VII
    Resident Evil 4
    Shadow of the Colossus
    The Last of Us
    The Witcher III

What else is there? Based on this community some Zeldas and Marios, and Dark Souls at least.

  • Super Mario 64, what can be said about that masterpiece? It's still my favourite Mario game and I think it's the best 3D Mario game. The sense of exploration in it is still unparalleled in the series and the sheer imagination displayed in every level is simply magical. From Bob-omb Battlefield to Tick Tock Clock, every stage feels unique. The game has a lot of joy, but also moments of fear and anticipation. The Road to Bowser sections always felt epic and intense, especially the last one, Bowser in the Sky, which leads to one of my favourite boss fights ever. With the final boss you have a gothic organ playing and creepy lighting as Bowser stomps into view. And just when you think you're ready for the last throw into the bombs, Bowser stomps the stage away leaving you to make a perfect shot. All of this is framed by Koji Kondo's incredible score, which contained some of the best tracks in Mario history. Pure genius.

Chrono Trigger. Unfortunately this game never came out in the UK until its re-release on the DS in 2008! As a result, I first played it when I got it for Christmas last year. But my word, I say why it's held in such high regard. You can feel the magic as soon as you boot it up, and the narrative is amazing with every detail accounted for, along with memorable characters and arcs. I remember when I visited a town a few centuries previously, and you see the earlier architecture of the place. Plus the battle mechanics are amazing and probably better than any JRPG of the time. And that soundtrack is gorgeous. For me it was always about the song for The End of Time. And what's better is that it's a game lead by a dream team with Hironobu Sakaguchi, Yuji Horii and Akira Toriyama. Marvellous!
