Imgur and other GIF embedding
-
Larger and longer gifs are slightly harder to embed since embedding a larger GIF produces a massive bandwidth hog.
@UltimateBrent, would you consider adding Imgur embedding similar to how Youtube links work? Maybe this could also include platforms like Gfycat, which is very popular on Reddit.
-
also larger and longer gifs defeats the purpose of GIFs. Imgur has a size limit of 2MB on gifs, above that it becomes a .gifv which is more like an .mp4 but wihout the sound.
-
@marcel Not sure I get what you want. You can paste links to those, just like you can on reddit. No one embeds them on reddit.
-
@UltimateBrent Reddit embeds those links by itself, you get a little play button on the site itself and the gfy plays much like the videos on this forum. Preeeetty sure that's what he means.
-
@Hoken I thought it was Reddit Enhancement Suite that did that.
ANYWAY, yeah, I hear ya. I don't see any plugins that do that already for NodeBB though, and I don't really have time to write one myself. We'll put this on the "someday" list.

@UltimateBrent As @Hoken already said, I am basically just suggesting that when I past a link to an imgur, that they convert into a inline player like it does with YouTube links
There is a nobeBB plugin for embedding imgur here. I checked out the code and it looks like it does exactly what I am suggesting: https://www.npmjs.com/package/nodebb-plugin-embed-imgur
I also found one for gfycat. The code also looks very simple and should be easy to implement:
https://www.npmjs.com/package/nodebb-plugin-gfycat

The Imgur one doesn't seem to work, I'll have to poke it later. Gfycat works fine though.

@UltimateBrent awesome gfy player!

@UltimateBrent Thanks so much ;) This will be very helpful :)

I'm assuming this is the Gify one that's not formatting to the mobile screen very well.
