Selective Creation: Pick Your Platformers!

  • Staying away from consoles, time to tackle what could be one of the more debate categories: Platformers! If there is a question about whether something constitutes a platformer, I'm sure we can come to a democratic answer.

SO: As always - Quick rule refresher for potential new players:

Here's the breakdown: You've been given the power to green-light 25 games, but here's the catch: these 25 games will be the ONLY platformers to ever exist. What should be the games that make the cut? By giving 25 select titles, you are essentially playing an inverse of Kill Your Babies.

You can only give one title until three people have added after you OR 12 hours have passed since the last overall addition, NOT YOURS, so think really hard about which game should be on the list. It could be your favorite game, or if your favorite is already present, then you can add another you hold dear. Or if you hate platformers, get to trolling if that makes you happy.

To try to have a little diversity, I'm instituting a TWO per franchise cap. So if two entries of a series get put on the list, a third CAN NOT be added.

Once you have given a game, please keep a running list going for the benefit of the next person that would like to play. Because I'm pitching the game, I will refrain from adding to the list unless absolutely necessary because it would be unfair for me to skew the list in my favor.

And so Allies, what are the 25 platformers above any others?
    Have fun!

  • Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy

I've completed it a dozen times with 100 % and I just love it every time so much. The whole overall feeling gives me a lot of joy. (Love the sequels as well.) Even my nick is from this game.

  • Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy
    Super Mario Bros. 3

Just thought I'd get in the best Mario game before the rest of ya dinguses decide a lesser game in the series deserves a spot.

  • Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy
    Super Mario Bros. 3
    Super Mario Galaxy

One of the most joyous games I've played. It just feels so good. So right.

Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy
    Super Mario Bros. 3
    Super Mario Galaxy
    Ape Escape

  • Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy
    Super Mario Bros. 3
    Super Mario Galaxy
    Ape Escape
    Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando

It's the best one so there.

  • Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy
    Super Mario Bros. 3
    Super Mario Galaxy
    Ape Escape
    Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando
    Portal 2

Whether or not this fits the category is definitely up for debate, and I'd love to know what other people think, but I personally feel like the Portal games can be called platformers. Instead of vertical jumping like in most platformers, you're jumping across an additional spacial dimension.

  • Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy
    Super Mario Bros. 3
    Super Mario Galaxy
    Ape Escape
    Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando
    Portal 2
    Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

It's not just any regular performance of the night, it's a fucking symphony!

  • @Ringedwithtile While I can tell you're joking, no need for name calling. Just sayin' ;-)

@terminallybill I would like to politely disagree

@Doctor-Professor Hm. Portal 2 is more puzzle game because that is its primary function. I see your point though. Much in the vain of saying Jak and Daxter, and Ratchet & Clank are action/adventures, Portal 2 can be classified with a secondary platformer. What I'll say is this: I don't have a problem with it being here, but in the next 24 hours of your post, if there is more opposition than inclusion, then I will ask for a replacement, but I don't see it as an issue.

  • Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy
    Super Mario Bros. 3
    Super Mario Galaxy
    Ape Escape
    Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando
    Portal 2
    Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
    Psychonauts

One of the greats, and some of the best video game levels of all time.

And Portal seems like a bit of a stretch to me as a platformer, but I won't complain too much about it

  • Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy
    Super Mario Bros. 3
    Super Mario Galaxy
    Ape Escape
    Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando
    Portal 2
    Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
    Psychonauts
    Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon

Of course I'm adding my GOAT what are you talking about.

  • Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy
    Super Mario Bros. 3
    Super Mario Galaxy
    Ape Escape
    Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando
    Portal 2
    Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
    Psychonauts
    Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon
    Sonic CD

Honestly it's a hard call between this and Sonic 3 but I'm going with CD because choosing 3 opens a whole can of worms (3 or Knuckles? Can I count Sonic 3K as just one entry? Or Sonic 3 Complete since while it's a fan-made romhack it's by far the best way to play that game in my opinion?)

  • Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy
    Super Mario Bros. 3
    Super Mario Galaxy
    Ape Escape
    Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando
    Portal 2
    Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
    Psychonauts
    Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon
    Sonic CD
    Donkey Kong Country Returns

More specifically Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, the definitive Donkey Kong game. I don't think there is a better 2d platformer than that game.

  • Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy
    Super Mario Bros. 3
    Super Mario Galaxy
    Ape Escape
    Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando
    Portal 2
    Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
    Psychonauts
    Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon
    Sonic CD
    Donkey Kong Country Returns
    Rayman Origins

Because it's just incredible. It's so colourful, sounds wonderful, is crammed with imagination and humour, and the controls are the most fluid I have seen in a 2D platformer. Also, it has a finely balanced rate of difficulty and offers some real challenge later on.

  • Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy
    Super Mario Bros. 3
    Super Mario Galaxy
    Ape Escape
    Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando
    Portal 2

    Psychonauts
    Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon
    Sonic CD
    Donkey Kong Country Returns
    Rayman Origins
    Spyro 2: Gateway to Glimmer

Apparently also known as "Ripto's Rage!". Anyway, my first Spyro game on PS1, and it hit really hard. I liked the structure of the game a lot.

  • Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy

    Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon
    Sonic CD
    Donkey Kong Country Returns
    Rayman Origins
    Spyro 2: Gateway to Glimmer
    Crash Bandicoot (3): Warped

Great variety in level design and gameplay, fun characters and good animations. Holds up!

    Sonic CD
    Donkey Kong Country Returns
    Rayman Origins
    Spyro 2: Gateway to Glimmer
    Crash Bandicoot (3): Warped
    Goemon's Great Adventure

Might as well use the 2 per IP rule.

  • Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy
    Super Mario Bros. 3

    Rayman Origins
    Spyro 2: Gateway to Glimmer
    Crash Bandicoot (3): Warped
    Goemon's Great Adventure
    Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze

Windmill Hills, Bopopolis, Grassland Groove,... almost every level in this game is a masterpiece.

  • Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy
    Super Mario Bros. 3
    Super Mario Galaxy
    Ape Escape
    Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando
    Portal 2

    Spyro 2: Gateway to Glimmer
    Crash Bandicoot (3): Warped
    Goemon's Great Adventure
    Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
    Ori and the blind forest

The only reason you could hate this game is that you haven't played it. it's magical in story, sound and visuals. Every new location is a pleasure to be in.
