What Are You Listening To?

  • Listened to They Might Be Giants' self titled debut album. It used to be tradition of mine to start with the first albums of older artists (and go wherever from there), and I glad i did it again with this one. It's a fun listen, very playful, and successfully humorous. Instrumentally solid too, although it can sound a bit too samey and skeletal sometimes.

Did the same thing with Death Cab for Cutie and Talking Heads. Something About Airplanes (Death Cab's album) is decent, a lot of songs here i don't care about but the rest of em' are pretty great so it's quite half-and-half for me. Talking Head's 77 is endearing and eccentric. I really enjoy the singer's style.

Don't really know where to go from here with these bands, so I might just go straight to their most popular albums.

  • @bam541 Transatlanticism is the essential Death Cab album. I'm a big fan of The Photo Album and We Have The Facts And We're Voting Yes as well. While Something About Airplanes is their first release as a full band, the true first release is You Can Play These Songs With Chords, which is just Ben Gibbard by himself as Death Cab For Cutie. It has a few of the same tracks as Something About Airplanes but (in my opinion) better cuts of those tracks. I'd avoid anything from Codes & Keys and later though - they just sound bland at that point.

    Helps with the meditation.

  • Arctic Monkeys' Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino is pretty good. I can't say I'm a big fan of them(at least not post-Humbug), so this album surprised me. Really loving the vibes of the instrumentals, the retro classy feel. The first two thirds has lots of great moments. It took a while for Alex's vocals to click for me though.

Currently listening to this soundtrack, this VN is quite a ride.

  • Thanks to a very lovely football/soccer chant, I'm hooked to The Stone Roses' self titled debut album now. Has lots of moments that surprised me, really good stuff overall.

Also, I'm a bit late to the party but The Black Keys are finally back! This is a pretty good single, continuing the sound and production style of Brothers and El Camino.

There's also this new Foals album, not familiar with them at all but I'm immediately downloaded the album after I watched this music video of one of the singles. Loving the sound of it. It's quite expressive, a bit dark, and feels slick. The bridge part near the end is so badass. Excited to listen to the whole album soon.

  • My top three bands are Radiohead, Cursive, and Foals, so I was super stoked to hear Foals not only had an album coming out this year, but actually a double part album with the second being released sometime in the fall. Then I started listening to it - this is some of their best work, right up there with Total Life Forever.

It has some dark edges, some of their most "danceable" work, and absolutely infectious sounds. Each track I'd listen to, I'd be immediately impressed with what I was hearing and then each track would turn in a beautiful direction. This is the longest amount of time separating their releases and it really shows - the band sounds so refreshed, energetic, and full of new ideas.

Listen to this album, it's brilliant.

  • Something from the new Haiduk album 'Exomancer' [black metal]

  • Not that I'm obsessed with Blue (Da Ba Dee) but VICE literally JUST released this mini-doc about the history of the record. It's pretty compelling and is a nice nostalgia trip into my younger years.

If anybody wants to recommend me some dance/europop I'd be happy. I kinda miss that sound.
