Nintendo Switch Launch/Hype

  • Nobody is talking about the Nindies Showcase?

In my opinion, there's a lot to be excited about!

SteamWorld Dig 2, loved the first one, so they probably can't go wrong with this.
WarGroove, basically Advance Wars reborn. Doesn't look like a cheap rip-off, it seems packed with interesting features, I'll definitely keep an eye on this one.
Shakedown Hawaii, that's a really nice surprise! I have Retro City Rampage on 3DS but still haven't gotten around to playing it, I'll probably do that soon.
The Escapists 2, good to know it's coming, and with local coop.

Some previously released games made for local coop: Overcooked, TowerFall Ascension, Enter the Gungeon, Stardew Valley!

I'm not surprised by this because it makes a lot of sense, but I'm very glad Nintendo saw the potential in having all these indie titles find a perfect home on the Switch. So many indie games are inspired by Nintendo games of old, they'll find a dedicated audience on this console. And since most of them are built for short sessions and/or local coop, the Switch becomes the de facto best platform to play them on.

  • @Axel Totally, that was the best Nintendo Direct / thing in a while save for the Breath, Odyssey, Splatoon, and ARMS trailers.

    Steamworld Dig 2
For me, an attempt at Motherload — an old flash digging game that got a sequel on consoles. Digging in the first one on 3DS didn't feel good and combat felt straight up bad, so I hope they work on that! I beat the first one, but don't really remember anything, so hopefully the metroidvania upgrades do more to differentiate themselves and the levels this time.

    Wargroove
I love the pixel art. Not quite sure I'll ever enjoy Fire Emblem combat, but hey, there's a lot of people waiting for that same game on the Switch.

    Mr. Shifty
A version of Hotline Miami with cel-shaded graphics that actually make me want to play, this will be a great early Switch release in April. And that TRIDENT throw, dude!

    Dandara
Gravity Rush in 2D with more spinning platforms and basically Lucario's aura sphere move. This game IS the coolest shit.

    Stardew Valley
I love sinking into a good grindy life game like Animal Crossing, but Stardew Valley is something I would never be able to muster up the energy to play on PS4. It sounds like just a perfect fit for the Switch to play around the house.

    Towerfall
This game is already out on PS4, but I live with firm non-gamers. Trying to get them to play this with me would be a fool's errand. It's a perfect fit on Switch, as I can take it to college or whatever and play with friends who play games.

  • I really want the switch yo. If someone could kindly lend me some money I'd be in your debt.

  • Kotaku review incoming!

"What I can tell you, without need for guesswork, is that the Switch is a beguiling, flawed piece of hardware that isn’t like any other gaming system I’ve owned. It executes its main idea well enough that its shortcomings are alternately forgivable and all the more frustrating."

Interesting read, even if you don't care for the source. Things I found most intriguing:

    • "There are other accessories you could buy, but let’s cap it there for now. That’s around $200 worth of stuff, none of which I would call an extravagance, even the Pro Controller. That puts the true cost of the Switch at $500, and you’ve only got one game." It seems like a lot of the accessories lean more towards the essential side, so the initial $300 price tag is misleading, but that puts it on par with pretty much all other console launches - besides the insane launch of the PS3.

    • In regards to Breath of the Wild, "When I play on the TV, I notice frequent dips below the game’s 30fps frame rate, sometimes to the point that it’s genuinely distracting and makes it harder to play. Any time I’m running in tree-shade on a sunny day in Hyrule, zooming in for a closer view, or moving quickly through the rain, it feels like things drop into at least the 20-25fps zone. If I pop the console out of the dock and start playing in tablet mode, everything immediately runs more smoothly." Hopefully this is something they can patch but the rest of this section seems confident Zelda will scratch that itch for fans of the series.

    • "That vibration is a crucial part of the experience, and the Joy-Con provide enough detailed vibratory feedback to make the games in 1-2 Switch much more fun." I'll be honest, I didn't really think much of the ice cube demo shown during the reveal but it seems like the tech actually is pretty innovative and could potentially be used in further games. I hope it gets more implementation than the gamepad for the Wii U.

  • @Mbun yeah it's almost a exact clone I'm surprised they didn't even mention it when they announced it

  • Well all the BotW Amiibo popped back up on Amazon , and not from resellers at a 3X mark up.

  • Day 1 for me, can't wait to get stuck into Bomberman

That's some next gen design right there!

  • so picked up my Switch 2 hours ago at the Australian midnight launch and spent these last couple of hours testing the system out.

And omg i am absolutely loving how much faster and easy to use and set up the Nintendo Switch is already and i've barely started.
already set up the console, played a bit of Zelda, linked my Nintendo Account to the Switch, merged the funds that were already sitting on my 3DS with my Switches eshop account and bought Snipperclips which is just about finished downloading now.
this is the fastest and easiest console i've ever had since the N64 days. aside from download times for games, which is more than fair enough, literally everything has been instantaneous for me so far.
no more disc loading times, no more disc installations, nothing!!!!
I see a bright future ahead of the Switch if it keeps this up :D

  • and with that first impression ladies and gentlemen. it's time for me to Switch off for night.

    Ciao.

What was the day one patch download time/size?

EDIT: Just seen your follow up post. Guess I'll have to find out for myself tomorrow

  • @thenerdtheword not sure about the download size.

took like a minute for me to download though. that was it :D

anyway i'm off to bed now. Merry Switchmas all.

  • Console arriving via Postal, Zelda thru UPS, and 2 unrelated art books (art of MGS5, and Nier art book) thru FedEx.

  • @DMCMaster Imagine if they all bumped into one another at once.

I got my Switch tonight and a Pro Controller. Shoutouts to strolling into Walmart at midnight with nobody there while all the suckers were lined up in the cold outside Best Buy.
    but no games

  • @Mbun Very nice! My brother got one pretty easily at Walmart as well. They told him 25-50 units were going to be available there.

  • Nintendo overestimated demand in Russia. Walked in the store today and saw collectors edition of Breath of the Wild lying on the shelf. All consoles and accessories are also available for purchase without pre-ordering.

    I'm sad for other regions.

  • This hurt me watching it but its seems the Switch is quite robust!

People are so fucking stupid it's unbelievable. To quote somebody on my twitter feed, i'm not buying any "used" Switch game because every kid and grown man is going to lick their cartridge because people are idiots.
