I was recently working on using a Raspberry Pi to help bring all of my retro game collection into one solid place and one of the very first games I tested it with is this one. While reading more info, I'd leave Sonic on a level for awhile, jam to the tunes, finish the level, and repeat the process. The soundtrack alone is phenomenal and it's arguably one of the best reasons to own a Genesis to this day.

    Command & Conquer: Red Alert

I don't always play RTSs, but when I do, I play Red Alert.

I never play any of these kinds of games. But back then i played a lot of that game. I would just sit there making my base as awesome as i could and making different types of squads to go out on missions. Never played the game the way i was suppose to.

Because Doom and Half Life (and Duke Nukem 3d) are the only single player shooters from the 90's you actually need.

One of the best Turn Based Strategy games out there, and easily holds up, though the second expansion didn't come until 2000... But the base game and it's first expansion are still great regardless.

Figured I'd give the RTS genre so more love in this list.

Back in the day, I had a science class where the teacher literally did not care what we did for her class. It was stocked with computers so like any nerdy kids, we quickly loaded it with any games we could find. AOE took over the entire class as we all tried out different civilizations and would see how far we could get. Once we discovered cheat codes, the game become legendary.

Those early days of Insomniac Games, and man, did they make a firm base for their studio with the Spyro games. I love how you can see all the things that then were further developed in Ratchet & Clank. They were really good already here.

The true survivor-horror king to me will always be Silent Hill. One of the darkest, most oppressive atmospheres a game could ever have. Plus, brilliant solutions to tech limitations, like the fog inhabiting the town, make it a great first entry for the series.

    One game left!

  • May I suggest another game where we can rank these babies? My idea would be to get select participants, and each round each person gets to vote to kill off each game listed. The game with the most votes gets ranked at #30, and it keeps going until we get to the final 2.

For a fun twist though each participant gets only one "Save" for the entire voting process. So if a game gets voted off, it takes only one person to save that game from elimination, and it survives for another round. The game can only be saved once from the entire process.

When it gets to the final 2, I'm thinking we do an underdog round, where any game that was ever saved gets into a small group of games, and we vote for the game that we think should be in the final 3. Then we vote for the game that we think should be the most important game of the 90s.

Let me know what you all think, I would also like the original poster of this game to be involved, and get his permission, since this all stemmed from his original post.

  • @Descendant The OP, @Brannox usually runs a "Kill Your Babies" game with the list as soon as it is finished. He has done a lot of these already but anyone is allowed to participate, there isn't an exclusive list. I think saves would make it very difficult, it can be confusing enough as is since some of the kills happen rapidly and you might not be around when a game you want to save gets axed. If you click on OP's profile or search for "Selective Creation" or "Kill Your Babies" you should find a bunch of the lists he has already run :)

The new game should be starting pretty soon too since you capped off the list!

  • And our final list looks like this:

    Vigilante 8
    Metal Gear Solid
    Pokemon Red/Blue
    Roller Coaster Tycoon
    Nights Into Dreams
    Crash Team Racing
    Turrican II
    Final Fantasy VII
    Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
    Mega Man X
    Tekken 3
    Diablo
    Shenmue
    Jet Moto
    Super Mario World
    Command & Conquer: Red Alert
    Starcraft
    Final Fantasy VIII
    Sonic the Hedgehog 2
    Tomb Raider II
    Doom
    Half Life
Heroes III of Might and Magic
    Age of Empires II
    Super Mario 64
    Spyro 2: Gateway to Glimmer
    Chrono Trigger
    Resident Evil 2
    Silent Hill
    Sonic Adventure

I would say that it's a pretty interesting list, and having played through most of these, and at least played a bit of the rest, I do feel that every title here is at least worth checking out. Yes, some amazing titles missed this list, stuff like Link to the Past, Duke Nukem 3D, Super Metroid, Donkey Kong Country, Killer Instinct and Street Fighter II.
I'll give @Brannox the honor to let him start the darker side of this list... Honestly, I'm not going to like this one at all. I do genuinely like all of these games here, though some more than others... We'll see how things turn out... In KYB... * shudders *
