  • I can't decide which version to watch first. Theatrical, Redux or Final.

Casino was great. After this second viewing, I consider it one of Martin Scorsese's best. A great mobster movie, up there with Goodfellas. The UHD puts my old Blu-ray to shame. I skimmed through the Blu-ray after. The new image is still soft because it's just that kind of movie, filmed in Super 35, but it's clearer and more naturally colored. Looks more like a film print now that it's no longer limited to 1080p and the YCbCr color space (because film has a wider range of colors than YCbCr). I'm kind of sad this expensive format will be used almost strictly for the more popular movies. I'd love to see what a Rainer Werner Fassbinder picture would look like. His movies have such nice colors to begin with.

Yesterday, I played the first hour of Astral Chain and watched the first episode of The Wire. I've already seen The Wire twice, as crappy DVD rips. I like the clarity and color of this Blu-ray version, but I'm still not sure how I feel about the new aspect ratio. I know some scenes are zoomed in, while others are expanded on the sides.

I also got a cabinet last week. I have enough movies now to warrant one. Took me two evenings to build it.

Sandman Omnibus 2 and Goodfellas UHD are arriving in about a week. I'm halfway through Sandman Omnibus 1 and I'm enjoying it.

  • @ezekiel Maaaaaan, The Wire is so good. Depressing to the point that I don't think I could put myself through it again but so, so good.

Yeah, I think I remember the creator David Simon saying that the point of it is that no matter what public service position you are in, whether it's the police, docks, schools, politics or press, you are compromised. He said it was largely inspired by Greek tragedies and Shakespeare.

  • Vision test and glasses that will be ready in two weeks. I've been using the same glasses since like 2005. My vision degraded slightly over the last fourteen years, which is amazing, considering how much I'm in front of my computer (and, more recently, TV) in a dimly lit room. I mainly just use them for the TV, even though everything at a distance is blurry. The test and two pairs for 91 dollars without insurance.

  • Banned

@capnbobamous The romantic pairing with Asami and Korra was an ass pull too, was done more as a stunt to score LGBT points than meaningful development. Nothing against those that are gay, but that was a total ass pull.

Just finished The Legend of Korra and thought to myself at the very end, "That... was... it? THIS is the lesbian pairing people on multiple forums I've been to were upset about?" I didn't find it forced or abrasive, and it needn't even be taken as romantic. Could be platonic. If it was romantic, then so what? They've been close friends, and Korra confided in her when she wouldn't with anyone else.

Anyway, I liked the show. Found it slightly worse than Avatar, but still good. I wish the two showrunners started a new show. It's not like there are many other action cartoons right now. I can only really think of Genndy Tartakovsky's upcoming Adult Swim series. But I don't watch TV, so what do I know?

  • I mentioned in the music thread that I recently listened to Less Than Jake's "Hello Rockview" and liked it. I got a CD of it off ebay so I could listen to it in my car while driving to work and stuff like that, and it's caked in "promotional copy do not resell" stickers. I dunno, I think it's kinda neat to think this thing probably belonged to some radio station back in the 90's.

  • @axel
Yeah that one just came out.
I was debating between that or Marvel, but Marvel apparently has a limited run (8K units) that and I've always to own a MvC cabinet (well anything of the MvC family) granted they announce a sequel unit with MvC 1,2 Marvel vs Street Fighter and X-Men vs Street Fighter I will be on that thing like oxygen to a blood cell......wait maybe a bad analogy.
