Sonic Forces™ Introduces New, Third Gameplay Style
Burbank, California — May 16, 2017 —
Today, SEGA® revealed the third gameplay style in Sonic Forces is a powerful gadget touting customizable character. For the first time in the Sonic series, players can create their own original Hero Character, and customize how the character plays and how it looks. This newly revealed playstyle in Sonic Forces is in addition to the previously revealed fast-paced action of Modern Sonic and the thrilling platforming of Classic Sonic.
In this just announced gameplay style, players will be equipping their custom Hero Character with one of a variety of powerful unique gadgets called Wispons. Wisponsare an evolution of the Color Powers fromSonic Colors and double as both offensive abilities and as a way to platform through levels quickly. Along with the Wispon, the Hero Character will have a grappling hook they can utilize to quickly traverse across zones. Players can also customize the Hero Character’s looks by choosing and swapping between hundreds of accessories and outfit options to change the character’s appearance as they play through the game.
There are seven base animal types that players can select from, each with varying special abilities:
- Wolf – Automatically draws in rings when near them
- Rabbit – Has longer invincible time after receiving damage
- Cat – Keeps one ring after being hit
- Dog – Restarts with five rings after the player dies
- Bear – Blows away enemies with a homing attack
- Bird – Flies high with double jump abilities
- Hedgehog – Collects rings when getting damaged
No matter what Hero the player chooses to create, it will be featured throughout the entire game. In a first for the Sonic franchise, a character the player creates will be a key part of the story, appearing not only in cut scenes, but by being a crucial element in helping Sonic reclaim the world from Eggman’s domination.
Sonic Forces will be available for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, & PC this Holiday. Join the Uprising to take back the world from Dr. Eggman.

This is just an objectively nice thing for Sega to make for Sonic fans. Perhaps it'll provide a more wholesome avenue for some of their creativity.

Sonic Mania is looking amazing. I almost never pre-order things but I went and pre-purchased this immediately after this trailer (so as soon as the option became available).
Played it last year at EGX and the gameplay is perfect while all of the levels shown thus far have looked amazing.
This is also making me realise how much I miss Tails and Knuckles - they haven't been playable since the Sonic Advance games back in the early 2000s. :'-(

Is Mania up for pre order on the Switch eShop yet does anyone know?

Now that is a great trailer! Still zero interest in the game, but I'll give them that!
@DisturbedSwan Well, I already pre-ordered it on Steam and I just checked the Playstation and Xbox store. It's available on both.
So I'm assuming the Switch has it up as well. If not then wtf Nintendo.

Mania's trailer is really good, and the little gameplay shown of Forces looks alright, I'm not too excited for either, but might just check them out if they turn out to be good. Looks like Sega keeps doing well and maybe finally doing good on Sonic.

So me liking Sonic Mania is a given, but I am sorta surprised by how much I want Sonic Forces to be good. I really want to like a modern Sonic game.
@Inustar It looks like It'll play exactly like Unleashed/Colors/Generations. So if you were a fan of any of those you'll probably like this one too.

@Art I enjoyed Generations, but the format and movement of Modern Sonic's stages never quite feel right. It's probably because I played so much Sonic Adventure. There just seemed to be more freedom of motion and more open spaces in those. The newer iterations are all about speed and almost restrict movement to lanes. It's just a style preference, a Mario 64 vs 3D World sort of thing. I completely understand the switch; I'm sure I'll still have a good time. I just hope they can make that type of story-centric 3D Sonic game again someday and have it actually be refined and great.
@Billy Lost World tried to go back to that, but the level design for the later half of the game killed it.

@Art I know the 3D Sonic games aren't generally well regarded, but I've been in a mood lately to try them out anyhow. I only played Adventure 1 & 2, albeit a whole lot. Maybe I'll drag my friends along to make it more entertaining, but I'd be curious to see where the franchise went astray.
@Billy After Adventure 2 the series went downhill with Heroes, then even further down with Shadow, then EVEN FURTHER DOWN with 06.
Then Unleashed came along taking inspiration from the DS games which created the groundwork for what modern Sonic is today.
Lots of new Mania and Forces footage for those interested.
