Kill Your Babies!: Cut Out the Current Classics!
-
As the countdown of lists and rounds keeps ticking down, the more entertaining these become. Now let's put an end to most of the defining games of the last seven years!
As always, just in case there are new players, here are the rules:
Rule #1: When you make a kill, give your reason why you are killing. Just taking it out isn't all that inspiring. Whether you truly dislike it, you strike out of revenge, you feel that there are other important titles that should have made it, or you have legitimate critiques, explaining your kill is necessary to validate its death. Yes, even to those of you who kill because they're good (Because that makes sense =-D)
Rule #2: Please keep the updated list for the benefit of other players. Cross through your kill to identify what's been chosen.
Rule #3: You may kill another game after only four other people have made a kill OR if 12 hours have passed from the last overall kill (not necessarily your own). This should be plenty of time for others to get involved.
Rule #4: If you fail to give a reason, make a 2nd kill without allowing the time to pass/proper amount of players a turn, or if there is an unforeseen issue up for potential review, your kill may not be recognized. This rule is subjective to the situation and hopefully will not be implemented.
Rule #5: Per normal, we will have a straw poll for the final two. Please vote for the one you want to win, not lose.
Let me know if you have any questions. Your kills are your own, so be ruthless, uncompromising, and most importantly:
HAVE FUN!!!

Horizon Zero DawnI, too, got served a wrong flavor of tea with this one. The overall design and aesthetic representation somehow makes me keep my distance. I mean it's not ugly, but...
And too much purple! (I said this not too long ago in another KYB thread as well about something.)

Horizon Zero DawnI feel like I have complicated enough feelings about this one to actually write something kinda sizable, so here goes. Papers Please was one of the first games I remember that came from an indie, art-driven, politically charged background to receive major attention and praise from mainstream gaming news outlets. Theoretically, this should make me really happy. Indie, politically charged "art games" are kind of my wheelhouse as a gamer (or at least a strong component of it). Its commercial and critical success also proved that these types of games deserve an amount of recognition that was rarely afforded to them beforehand. However, I still feel the lingering traces of salt that come with this: the game to get the most mainstream recognition from this loosely-defined genre isn't the best. In fact, not even close to it. Papers Please was overall decent at unifying mechanics, art direction, audio design, and message to communicate the soul-crushing tedium of being a border control officer. Where I take issue is that the game tries to get you to confront the people you accept or deny access to as complex individuals by denying access to any other human beings. Representing your home status with one-word text descriptions matches the rest of the game's stark tone, but it also makes it easy to forget about the humanity of the family you're working to help support. This takes a lot away from the moral decision implicit in the core mechanics, since weighing consequences becomes less of a factor. For me, this simplification killed a lot of the game's potential, and it's not really the kind of game that you play for the sheer fun factor. I found myself unable to play for more than a few minutes at a time because of the harshness communicated in the visual style.
