Selective Creation Exhibition: Pick the Best Mini-games!

  • Now we're going to start a quick little series of builds of what I call Exhibitions - Lists whose topics have been different from normal. First up, time to decide what the best Mini-games in all gaming are!

As always - Quick rule refresher for potential new players:

Here's the breakdown: You've been given the power to design 25 min- games, but here's the catch: these 25 mini-games will be the ONLY games that will ever exist. What should make the cut? By giving 25 select choices, you are essentially playing an inverse of Kill Your Babies.

You can only give one title until four people have added after you OR 12 hours have passed since the last overall addition, NOT NECESSARILY YOURS, so think really hard about which game should be on the list. It could be your favorite mini-game, or if your favorite is already present, then you can add another you hold dear. Or if you have no love or interest for mini-games in genreal, get to trolling if it makes you happy. TO BE CLEAR: This does NOT mean sidequests. We're talking games within games.

NO franchise cap! Mini-games are typically (but not exclusively) found in only two or three genres and many of the best mini-games out there come from two or three franchises. So go nuts with the distractions you like to have from the main story.

Once you have given an entry, please keep a running list going for the benefit of the next person that would like to play. Because I'm pitching the game, I will refrain from adding to the list unless absolutely necessary because it would be unfair for me to skew the list in my favor.

And so Allies, what are the best 25 mini-games of all time?

    Have fun!

  • Triple Triad (FF8)

Gotta love that music. The game itself is fun as well

  • Triple Triad (FF8)
    Poker (Red Dead Redemption)

The atmosphere of playing in the Wild West is brilliant. Also, you can cheat and end up in a quick draw shoot out when someone catches you, or is pissed off because you've taken all their money.

  • Triple Triad (FF8)
    Poker (Red Dead Redemption)
Desert Island Escape (Animal Crossing: New Leaf)

Jolly little survival/item management game! It was originally part of Amiibo Festival but was added to New Leaf as well. Not gonna lie, there have been times I've opened AC:NL just to play Desert Island Escape.

  • Triple Triad (FF8)
    Poker (Red Dead Redemption)
Desert Island Escape (Animal Crossing: New Leaf)
    Hostess Club Manager (Yakuza series)

    Yep. I went there.

Desert Island Escape (Animal Crossing: New Leaf)
    Hostess Club Manager (yakuza series)
    Fighter Manager/Trainer (Yakuza 4)

I'm not as head over heels over the Yakuza games as other people, because I think these games have some pretty big problems, but I had a blast training dudes for fights.

  • @bard91 probably would have been my 2nd pick

  • Triple Triad (FF8)
    Poker (Red Dead Redemption)
Desert Island Escape (Animal Crossing: New Leaf)
    Hostess Club Manager (yakuza series)
    Fighter Manager/Trainer (Yakuza 4)
    Liar's Dice (Red Dead Redemption)

    My personal favorite!

    Hostess Club Manager (yakuza series)
    Fighter Manager/Trainer (Yakuza 4)
    Liar's Dice (Red Dead Redemption)
Tin Pin Slammer (The World Ends With You)

I know I might be one of the only people on this planet who likes this, but heck, I still say it's fun :D

    Fighter Manager/Trainer (Yakuza 4)
    Liar's Dice (Red Dead Redemption)
Tin Pin Slammer (The World Ends With You)
    Forklift Racing (Shenmue)

Nothing can top the excitement of this exhilarating motorsport.

    Blitzball (FFX)

Someone had to put it on there and I'm not ashamed to admit I loved building a team playing Blitzball.

I'm good at it in real life because I got good at it in Yakuza.

    UFO catcher (Yakuza series)
    Gwent (Witcher 3)
    Galaxy Monkey (Ape Escape)

I remember putting many hours into this minigame, and not regretting a single moment. It's a basic twin-stick ufo shooter ordeal, yes, but it's fun distraction in a pretty nifty game.

    Gwent (Witcher 3)
    Galaxy Monkey (Ape Escape)
    Demontower (Night in the Woods)

This little top down dungeon crawler is a great game within a game! You can see a lot of influence from Hyper Light Drifter in the mechanics and styling, it offers a nice little break from the core story, and it is fun and challenging! What more could you ask for?

  • @TokyoSlim Despite our ongoing feud, I fully support your pick! I spent so much time on this in Yakuza 0, I had to force myself to stop or I would have never finished it.

  • @Axel I'd like to say that I don't think it's really a feud. That terminology seems a bit... Hatfields and McCoys.
It's more like I'm gonna fill your coat pockets with creamed corn when you're not looking.

    Gwent (Witcher 3)
    Galaxy Monkey (Ape Escape)
    Demontower (Night in the Woods)
    Snowboarding (Twilight Princess)

The slope down Snowpeak descending to the ruins is really well designed, with several different secret paths and purple rupees hidden where it's toughest to stay on. It's also got a sick midi soundtrack and enemies in the course. You can use sword slashes to hit enemies or slow down your yeti opponents, as well as a spin attack to jump gaps. Lastly, this race's context is impeccable: the yeti 'boarders don't ask for rupees like every other mini game in the series because they live away from society in the ruins, not using currency. That also helps to balance the difficulty, since falling off the edges, gaps, or shortcuts means restarting from the top.

Captain Toad (Super Mario 3D World)

not 100% sure if this counts but it was either this or Space Harrier in Shenmue and I mean, I figured it'd be safer to go with the minigame so good that it became a full fledged title over the one that's just straight up a real, full game running in an emulator in-game.
