Kill Your Babies! (Exhibition): Rehash the EZA Community 2016 GOTYs!


  • In the midst of KYB Exhibitions now is the time to revisit GOTY talk from last year. That's right: the EZA Community Top 25 games of 2016 is now up for your scrutiny of killing!

    As always, just in case there are new players, here are the rules:

    Rule #1: When you make a kill, give your reason why you are killing. Just taking it out isn't all that inspiring. Whether you truly dislike the game, you strike out of revenge, you feel that there are other important entries that should have made it, or you have legitimate critiques, explaining your kill is necessary to validate its death. Yes, even to those of you who kill because they're good (Because that makes sense =-D)

    Rule #2: Please keep the updated list for the benefit of other players. Cross through your kill to identify what's been chosen.

    Rule #3: You may kill another entry after only four other people have made a kill OR if 12 hours have passed from the last overall kill (not necessarily your own). This should be plenty of time for others to get involved.

    Rule #4: If you fail to give a reason, make a 2nd kill without allowing the time to pass/proper amount of players a turn, or if there is an unforeseen issue up for potential review, your kill may not be recognized. This rule is subjective to the situation and hopefully will not be implemented.

    Rule #5: Per normal, we will have a straw poll for the final two. Please vote for the one you want to win, not lose.

    FFXV probably doesn't deserve all the crap it gets, but it deserves some of it. I haven't finished it yet. That and Horizon and TW3 are on my backlog to finally get around to beating. But yeah, it's not a goty.

    It's a great game and all, but the stupid "augment your pre-order" crap and scetchy last minute b-shit microtransactions etc. combined with the cliffhanger ending that just begs for a sequel we might never get makes this a easy kill in the end.

    The Witness isn't a puzzle game, The Witness is a $40 iPhone game set in a world that has no effect (Yes, I've found the twist you insufferable lot who would seek to 'but, actually' me!). Zelda is a puzzle game, or rather it was before they made an open world spinoff that secrets all of the careful level design away to Super Mario Sunshine challenge levels that really are all but completely divorced from the focal areas of the game. But the puzzle Zelda games — and I'm also not talking about A Link Between Worlds or whatever Pokemon Gym 2D trash you're thinking of — had beautiful, contextual puzzles that played off of the player's expectation of physics. Using the iron boots to sink down into the water and cling to magnetic surfaces and exploring 3D environments with a gradually expanding collection of items like the double clawshots.

    tl;dr: Crawling through gaps and weighing down floor switches in Zelda will always be more engaging than, glorified block escape puzzles set in a 3D facade. Even if Nintendo decides to keep messing up the item progression in the new games and making the puzzles painfully easy for no reason.

    It's cute and the combat stacking is interesting but ultimately it was pretty forgettable. :(
