Basic Rules for DnD 5th Edition are free on the Wizards of the Coast website here. Those are good enough to get started making a character for anyone hesitant to invest in the print sourcebooks.

our group has this really weird situation where...were all normally free around certain times, but each of the next few weekends each of us has a prior engagement already in the works. kinda bizarre but itll be starting in august. idk if theres another group going. might be worth starting up another group around a different time. idk.
