    And the associated tagline...

Being stranded on a deserted island leaves young Hank (Paul Dano) bored, lonely and without hope. As a rope hangs around his neck, Hank prepares to end it all, until he suddenly spots a man (Daniel Radcliffe) laying by the shore. Unfortunately, he is dead and quite flatulent. Using the gassy body to his advantage, Hank miraculously makes it back to the mainland. However, he now finds himself lost in the wilderness, and dragging the talking corpse named Manny along for the adventure.

Daniel Radcliff and Paul Dano team up as an unlikely pair of friends who must help each other escape the wilderness. The film begins as Hank is stranded on a desert island about to end his life from the lonliness of his isolation, when suddenly Manny's body floats ashore reinvigorating Hank's will to survive and return home. In the first of many times in which Daniel Radcliff as Manny will fart onscreen, he saves Hank by using his flatulence as to propel them as a jetski. If you watched the trailer, you know I'm not making this up.

Manny is a corpse or perhaps something else; the film doesn't go to great lengths to explain the why's and how's of Manny's body, and in many ways the film is better for it allowing the film an odd magic, whimsy and darkness that sets the bed for an at times bizarre but ultimately touching and humorous relationship between him and Hank. They build this relationship primarily by having Manny be an amnesiac as Hank explains human society to him in attempts to jog his memory. The process is ultimately therapeutic to Hank who has his own troubles prior to having been stranded, in addition to Manny's amazing body which is able to do things that save Hank's life so many times over that to mention all of his powers would be a list unto itslef.

The film is weird and quirky in ways that are so strange and at times self aware and there's a central plot point that isn't spoken about in the trailer involving Manny's memories that I won't speak too too much about, but they touch on many many aspects of the human condition including love and friendship, which are perhaps the biggest themes of the movie

Again, it's weird, it's heart touching, farts play a central role in the film and Daniel Radcliff plays a corpse. It's a film that will surprise and touch you with it's creativity and humor.

I give it a 2 thumbs up, and encourage others to see it because it's more than just spectacle or pure weirdness, and you'll definitely smile and laugh at least a few times

  • Saw it last night, loved it.
