On that note, its almost expected at this point. Anti science, anti truth conservatism has permeated not just American politics, but world politics for a long time now. Trump just gave it a face and made it acceptable.

It's a stunning moment in stupidity, and if anything I think it's also something that proves how dangerous social media is in the wrong hands. The ability to just spout out any stupid thing you want and not get punched for it is just going to continue to more shit like this. Personally Trump should be charged with inciting a riot, the 4(more?) Deaths, and treason, along with everyone else who stormed the Capitol Building, although doing that might just make things worse, especially with the inauguration of Biden in 2 weeks.
Also I don't know about Capitol Hills security during normal circumstances but if 3000 idiots could do this in like 2 hours what the fuck was stopping literally anything else potentially happening both in the past and looking forward into the future.

There's a really simple answer for "how did we get here" or "who's to blame," and that answer is "We all are, by using social media the way we do." The past two months have been a major slap in the face for American democracy. I hate that the weirdo fringe cult down there has somehow managed to trickle into my countries subconscious here and there, but we've had that problem since the advent of radio. Yeah, the US still has democracy, but it's basically a living breathing Simpson's episode or SNL skit these days.
I have some American friends who were born in Texas to Canadian-American parents and their family is so happy those chose to leave America in like 2004. They said their town, a town of mostly white people and Mexican's, had their first interracial high school dance in 2002, and it was controversial. None of this behaviour yesterday surprises me when I hear stuff like that.
Also... how can a musician on stage at a festival get charged with "inciting a riot" when the crowd gets rowdy, but the President is basically a glorified kook on the street corner with a soapbox and an amp, yet he walks away scot free?
