That's News!

@tokeeffe9 I think by now we should all have the hindsight to realize that no one really asks for these, but fantasy IP TCG spinoffs often turn out great. People freaked out and asked why we needed a WoW card game at its announcement and Hearthstone revolutionized TCGs. More people freaked out when The Elder Scrolls got one and it ended up taking the best elements of both Hearthstone and Magic and combining them into the most convenient skillful TCG.
That being said, Hearthstone was based off of a trilogy and the most influential MMO / vast money-sucking cult, Legends was based off of the most influential open world game series known for its deep lore. What can a developer that's not actually developing anymore (save for the odd DOTA hero) do with a mod and a MOBA? Does DOTA even have enough backstory to fill a set of 300 cards? Those games are just the same thing over and over again, often in the same exact map. That trailer was even more of a vague nothing than the Hearthstone and Legends announcements, so it certainly doesn't feel like they want anyone to care (except, perhaps, geologists and Marvel fans).
Regardless, we need Kyle to do a future news segment so we can get the skinny on the Lord of the Rings, Final Fantasy, and Game of Thrones card games before their 2023 release.
-
@Haru17 I'd say I've a pretty decent knowledge of the gaming industry but I've absolutely no idea about DOTA at all.
I'm sure the game could turn out to be great too, it was never meant for the people who are going to complain most about this. I do remember in an AMA that Gabe said they're developing 3 games. I'm more so curious about them than expecting what people crave.
-
@tokeeffe9 I'm not sure people even crave Half Life 3 anymore. 90% of the people spreading that meme probably never even played those games. Only a another game and a half from Valve really, but hey, that means we might get a card game soon!
-
@Haru17 It honestly baffles me as to why Squeenix hasn't capitalized on the TCG craze and released a mobile Triple Triad/Tetra Master type game using all of the FF characters.
And lets be real, an HL3 announcement would break the internet.
-
@El-Shmiablo There is a Triple Triad mobile game (with online MP) but it's tied to the FF Portal App
-
@El-Shmiablo
I thought only pointless celebrities who are famous for no reason could break the internet? But yeah, HL 3 wont break the internet, IT WILL DESTROY IT...for like 3 days
-
Yeah, Valve put themselves in a rough spot with Half Life 3. If they ever release it (I doubt it), there's no way it could possibly live up to expectations. They have so many incredible franchises under their belt they are doing nothing with, they've let their marketplace become flooded with actual trash games and asset flips, and their first major announcement in awhile is a card game. Calling them out of touch is being too kind at this point.
-
imagine if valve does a HL3 trailer and they have no event just put a trailer on facebook or something
-
Well of course it would be popular, it's just more of a meme than anything real at this point since Valve's let their fans stew with an incomplete story for so long. As has been mentioned, there would probably be a second (or in 2017, fifth) freak out when it actually releases and — oops — isn't half as innovative as people expect it to be due to the last decade and a half of FPS.

Kotaku - Call of Duty: WW2 Gives You Prizes For Watching Others Open Loot Boxes
Headquarters seems to act as a lobby that up to 48 people can spend time in between online multiplayer matches. One of the things you can do is open the aforementioned cosmetic loot boxes you'll unlock while playing, or you can watch others open theirs in the hopes of winning prizes for doing so. Activision-Blizzard, of course, knows more about loot boxes than any company in the world, and doubtless seeing your friends unlock cool cosmetic gear leads to more purchases overall.
Publishers/Developers going as far as possible to maintain engagement in their games. Considering this already happens with streams dedicated to people opening packs/boxes, I can see it working.

UFO 50 announced (PC, 2018)
Youtube VideoUFO 50 is a collection of 50 single and multiplayer games from the creators of Spelunky, Downwell, Time Barons, Skorpulac, and Madhouse. ... Our goal is to combine a familiar 8-bit aesthetic with new ideas and modern game design sensibilities.
This might not be a huge one but I hadn't heard of it (or at least didn't pay attention) until this weeks podcast. It sounds like such a cool idea to me and some of the guys behind it, in particular the creators of Spelunky & Downwell for me, makes it a really interesting project.

Release Date for Etrian Odyssey 5
http://gematsu.com/2017/08/etrian-odyssey-v-launches-october-17-americas
I don't know if anyone else is interested on it, I have it pre ordered and it would be my first game on the series, I enjoyed PQ. Thinking it is similar I hope I'll also like the gameplay on this one, although I've heard they are usually light on story which is not my preference, but I guess I'll have to wait and see.

@Sentinel-Beach And so the mystery of the Fallout 4 GOTY edition is finally concluded. Weird it's so late, I bet Bethesda wanted to make space for the Skyrim re-release.

Tekken 7 has sold 1.66 million so far
Tekken 7’s sales figures have been revealed thanks to Namco Bandai’s first quarter results for fiscal 2017. The sales expectations for Tekken 7 are 2.1 million by the end of the year, and it looks like they are on track to meet that sales target as they have already sold 1.66 million copies of Tekken 7 so far.
I think this is already more than the total amount SFV has sold. If not it's pretty damn close. Just shows how much Capcom messed up with it.

Apparently the XBone version of Conan Exiles will be censored, in the US, but not in europe, lol.

@tokeefe9 I thought our position as verysmartgamesinsiders was that sales don't correspond to quality? I shouldn't really be surprised people play favorites with as many irrational preconceptions as they have, such trying to rationalize holding grudges against multinational companies as if they're individuals. It's still a pretty ridiculous waste of energy though.
