Switch sells 4.7 million units
-
"B-b-b-but artificial Scarcity! Switch isn't really doing as well as Nintendo says it is!"
-
Selling nearly 5 million Switches in 4 months is very good and puts Nintendo on pace to meet their 10 million goal, especially with the fall sales season yet to come. Hopefully this means they'll invest more in software development than they did from about 2009 after the Wii had crested to the end of the Wii U in 2016.
-
They should be selling more
-
They haven't sold one to me. And that's the true litmus test.
-
@TokyoSlim Who are you?
-
@Mbun I'm the guy without a switch.
-
They would've sold at least a couple of million more if they could keep up with demand. I read that even with component shortages they're still well on track to selling 14 million in the 1st year. That's more than the WiiU sold in it's entire lifecycle. The holiday period is gonna be crazy if they can get enough units made.
I've been a nintendo fan from literally the beginning of their videogame business, and the Switch is well on it's way to being my favorite Nintendo console ever, and it's only going to get better. Couldn't be happier with the thing so far.

Scientific.
People in this thread hold themselves in high esteem.
-
@Haru17 Sorry, didn't know this was a forum for scientific researchers.
Look at the waiting lines in Japan alone. They actually have waiting lines for lotteries to be able to BUY a Switch. And let's not pretend Japan is the only country where you can't find a Switch on store shelves. So yeah, I don't think it's farfetched to say that they would've sold an extra couple of million if suply could keep up with demand.
-
Whoa, let's simmer down fellas.
Great news for Nintendo all around. Also, interesting to see how similar software sales are to hardware sales (e.g. Zelda and Mario Kart being bought by the vast majority of switch owners). I wonder if that was part of their rollout strategy. If so, pretty genius.
-
@naltmank I heard Nintendo's plan was to have a big tentpole game close to every month in 2017. Zelda > MK8 > Arms > Splatoon2 > Mario&Rabids > Pokken Tournament DX > Mario Odyssey & Xenoblade Chronicles 2 finishes off the year. Add some popular third parties and indies like Fifa 18, Minecraft, WWE2k18, Overcooked, Death Squared & Rocket League and they got a pretty solid 1st year software wise. So yeah, it's night and day with the WiiU.
-
@Jacques Yeah, I heard that as well. I was more commenting on how that strategy now seems like it was designed to maximize the sales of each game, rather than avoid a mid-summer drought of releases. Maybe that was obvious to everyone else from the start, but it's still pretty astonishing that both Zelda and Mario Kart were bought by over 80% of consumers, and that Arms managed to clear the 1 million mark in just a couple weeks with the 4.7 million install base. Does anyone know if there are similar games (i.e. bought by over 70% of console owners) for Sony Microsoft?
-
@Jacques If you don't want to be a 'scientific researcher,' don't put a number on it and say 'at least' as if you know something you don't. You could just say it'll sell more, leave it at that, and not be speaking from nothing.
-
Everything is going according to plan, it's so satisfying to see especially after the years of Wii U-induced Nintendo bashing.
@Haru17 Chill out! I don't want to speak for Jacques but his "couple million" was nothing more than an estimate, and a pretty realistic one at that. It's a fact that they would sell more if they could make more. Just because he threw out a number instead of just saying "more" doesn't justify lashing out at him like that.
-
That's a very mild lashing out. I'm just asking for us to discuss knowable things. Without further knowledge no one can say if the people lining up in Japan are just die hard Nintendo fans or a more general audience, let alone do sales projections.
-
Still quite impressive numbers!
I don't want to poke any fingers, but the tone in this thread seem to having a chance to derail a little, so just a reminder to take it easy and don't attack each other over some numbers
-
I've heard that the PS4 is outselling the Switch (per month) which isn't a good sign for Nintendo, but still pretty respectable numbers.

Nintendo is selling all the Switches they make, and the word is that they physically can't make more due to an industry-wide parts shortage:

Hm, well they will need to make it back during the holidays then, if they can get their act together by then. If people can't buy a Switch they will buy another system and are then less likely to buy another system after that.

It's not really up to them. Pretty much nobody can outbid Apple and Samsung for parts, and new fabrication lines for chips can't be thrown up overnight.
