I personally hate point and click adventure but im enjoying monkey island actually. mainly because of guybrush and comedy and pirate theme.

  • Favorites (difficult because so much of the industry is silent protagonists or create-a-characters):

      1. Ellie (The Last of Us)
      1. Joel (they're a dual protagonist but I need to fill seats)
      1. Midna (Twilight Princess)
      1. Kat (Gravity Rush)
      1. Max Caulfield (Life is Strange)

    Worst:

      1. Shulk (Xenoblade)
      1. Geralt (The Witcher)
      1. Batman (Arkham)
      1. Isaac Clarke (Dead Space)
      1. Space reserved for silent protagonists who are given no attempt at characterization because they are all the same voiceless, inoffensive void.

Honestly I don't really feel the hate for #3 & 4, I just had to fill the list and they were kind of annoying / amalgamations of gender roles and not actual characters.

    Oh this is kinda hard.

    Best-

    1. Vivi Orunitia - Final Fantasy IX
    2. Nathan Drake - Uncharted Series
    3. Garrus Vakarian - Mass Effect series
    4. Sarah Karagan - StarCraft series
    5. Ezio Audiore da Frienze - Assassin's Creed series

    The Worst

    1. Hope - Final Fantasy XIII
    2. Alistar - Dragon Age
    3. that freakin guy from Heavy Rain
    4. Star Child - Mass Effect 3
    5. The evil guy in CoD: infinite warfare

  • I would have picked Vivi, but Vivi isn't really the protagonist of FFIX. :p

You've really only got Drake and Ezio. Everyone else is a side character. :)

  • Best (In no particular order)

    Phoenix Wright (Ace Attorney)
    Minako Arisato (Persona 3 Portable)
    Amaterasu (Okami)
    Raz (Psychonauts)
Midna (Twilight Princess) [I feel like she counts]

  • @michemagius Midna is definitely used as the vocal protagonist with a character arc in Twilight Princess the same way Issun is used to speak for Amaterasu while she does all the heavy lifting. It's honestly eerie how similar in premise those two games are for coming out in the same year, I feel like Capcom must have been taking tips on how to make a 3D Zelda game after developing the Gameboy ones for Nintendo.

  • Worst

1- The rich guy and the crazy guy from GTA5
    2- Nathan Drake
    3- Nico from GTA4
    4- idk
5- idk can't think of other protags I hate as much right now

    Best in particular order

    Raz (Psychonauts)
    Tommy Vercetti
    Guybrush
    Travis Touchdown
    Minako Arisato

yeah. thanks for recommendation sher, you know? i always hated adventure games (like taletale games and life is strange) because they are more of interactive movie with puzzle solving. how ever im surprise by tales of monkey island. its a pretty good game. but they lack replay value. once you figure out what to do. there is no point of replaying again.

  • My favourite videogame protagonists are:

Naked Snake - Metal Gear Solid 3
    Gwendolyn - Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir
Jade - Beyond Good & Evil
John Marston - Red Dead Redemption
    Herschel Layton - Professor Layton

I can't think of protagonists I particularly dislike at the moment.

@TokyoSlim I do see what you mean and I kinda agree with you. On the other side though at least I played with them 100% of the time I could, so for that I would class them as protagonists, even though they might not be that to its word full meaning.

  • @Lotias I'm not sure what you mean. Protagonist means "main character or primary playable character."

Zidane, for example, is the protagonist of FFIX. The game is telling Zidane's story. You are controlling Zidane. Commander Shepard is the protagonist of Mass Effect. There's not a lot of room for interpretation except maaaaaybe in the case of Heavy Rain (which is a spoiler)

case of playable antagonist via unreliable narrator

  • Best (in no particular order)

    Kazuma Kiryu - Yakuza series
Maya Amano - Persona 2: Eternal Punishment
Ramza Beoulve - Final Fantasy Tactics
    Trevor Philips - GTA5
Alucard - Casltevania: Symphony of the Night

    Worst (in no particular order)

Link - any of the Zelda games
Mario - any of the Mario games
Master Chief - any of the Halo games
    Tidus - Final Fantasy X
    Noctis - Final Fantasy XV

Just a few observations from the other lists:

I don't understand the hate for Trevor from GTA. The series is known for having you take control of a character that does some out right insane and evil things, yet the narrative never matches that. Trevor gives you a reason to do those awful things and he takes pleasure in it. He's a huge dirtbag and it's glorious.

When trying to think of the "worst", most of the biggest names in gaming come straight to mind. Link feels like the worst because he's been in so many games and is always virtually the same. Mario is just happy but has the personality of white paint. Even Donkey Kong has a bit more going on for him and he can't even speak!

Sorry @Lotias, I gotta agree with @TokyoSlim, your list is mostly just characters, not protagonists. :P Although I'm in the minority here, I actually think Hope was one of the few characters that had a real change in FFXIII. He went from whining constantly (albeit it was about his mother dying) to finding his inner strength and taking challenges head on. Plus, he was just an awesome ravager so there's that.

  • @SabotageTheTruth My hate for the GTA5 cast goes well along with me starting to dislike the franchise after 4, in previous games I never felt a sense of seriousness, or maybe you could say I thought there was a campiness to it that allowed me to take the games for what they were. Starting with 4 I felt a tone shift and that campiness was gone, suddenly I was playing a game that while not completely serious it didn't have the same atmosphere that allowed me to take things lightly, and I couldn't just put brush off the abhorrent characters and the things they did any more, to the point were all of my interest in playing the game went away and I just hard quitted it.

  • @bard91 Again, that's why I like Trevor - because he takes a very serious story and adds some silliness to it. Although that torture scene... whew.

  • @SabotageTheTruth to me that was in no way silliness just general fuckedupness
