Return of the Selective Creation: 25 of the Best Stories in Video Games


  • Hello everyone, since i miss @Brannox lists so much, I thought I would go ahead and get another one going.

    For myself, the first time video games really clicked for me was when I played games that offered me story rich experiences. I know this isnt the case for everyone that plays games. We all do for different reasons. However, I know many of you out there care for stories in games and some have experienced more then others. So i hope this list may help others in finding games they may not have known about, or just simply skipped over. Or watch it be all the major AAA franchises in the last 10 years... your call.

    So with that being said I want you to come up with 25 of the best stories that video games have to offer in no particular order.

    RULES:

    If its not broke, dont fix it. We will follow the same rules as previous lists that were created by @Brannox

    • After your first turn you may only add 1 title until 4 people have added after you OR 12 hours have passed since the last addition.

    • Please carry over the list with your added game in your post so others can do the same.

    • I guess if you hate games with stories, feel free to Troll...

    • OPTIONAL: Feel free to add why you chose that game, or how the story impacted you.

    I was debating on making this list longer. If the community feels that it should be, please let me know before 5 games have been added and i'll change it.

    Final Fantasy VII

    Simply put, this game impacted me in a not too good spot in my life. I would go longer, but to continuously give the game praise in every thread I populate would be pointless.

    I'm excited to see this list come together. And let's not fight, but talk about it ;-)

    It was my first foray into the series and if it would have just been a game with goofy mini games and fun fighting, I would have walked away happy. However, the main story is excellent and in many regards, is one of the best crime dramas I've ever experienced. So many twists and turns, betrayals, emotional pay-offs, and just outright brutality. Plus, you get to experience it from two perspectives, the Dragon of Dojima and the Mad Dog of Shimano, you couldn't ask for more.

    Metal Gear Slid 2/3(having a hard time picking between the two)
    My vote mainly goes to MGS 3, for being a mostly stand alone title, without most of the baggage that MGS2 brought with it. However MGS2 also gets a vote for being a game ahead of its time and being a eerily prophetic story.

    The best game in the entire genre of horror and why is that? Because the story is outstanding. An unreliable protagonist, an insanely odd reason to be visiting the town, and a twist for the ages.

    Well I'll come along to add UC 4 @Inustar! This one is for pretty much the reason you listed, but for me, it's also more than that. The performances and writing were incredible and every time Elena was on screen, I felt blown away by the culmination of the history between herself and Drake. Phenomenal to me.
