The Game Awards 2017. Who has your vote?

  • @Brannox

What you are saying makes complete sense. I doubt they interview the industry panel. They also likely submit a vote. I'm surprised that Yakuza 0 didn't make best narrative which makes me wonder how many people on the panel played it. It's actually shocking to me.

What I'm curious about is if they had guidelines for the genre categories. I wonder if Nier didn't make the cut in action game or if it didn't qualify due to their classifications.

  • @DIPSET Again, I can only speculate, although I do feel like the judges had some liberty in what to nominate where.

And while it may surprise you, it doesn't to me. I think Yakuza is following Persona's track. Persona has really become mainstream since Persona 4 Golden. Now that people such as yourself are singing Yakuza 0's praises, who isn't to say when Yakuza 6 launches next year, it has more of a presence?

Please also keep in mind who is on the panel. Easy Allies and other influencers? I believe they know of Yakuza's quality. But the big named mainstream not primarily associated with industry (Entertainment Weekly, USA Today, TIME) probably don't focus on franchises that are currently more niche than others like Yakuza, Nier, and Nioh. Once more, this is entirely conjecture, and it could come out one of those three was the only one to nominate Yakuza 0. Shrugs shoulders

  • First off, yeah i hate that PUBG is nominated for GOTY or nominated for anything at all. I don't care how popular it is, it's not an official release. But whatever.

This was very hard voting for me. The best year in gaming of all time. It took a while to decide between Zelda and Persona. Good thing they both came out at the same time. I love them both a lot but...I voted Persona 5. It just stuck with me longer than Zelda, i kept thinking and missing it. Whereas for BotW it was just, well I'll get back to it with the DLC so any thoughts were dismissed. Whereas, I still think about the characters in Persona 5. I still think about things in BotW too like some puzzles and just exploring the world. But one had to be chosen for GOTY.

I did vote for BotW for Best Action game. Best Music was the hardest, harder than GOTY. Cuphead, P5 and Nier Automata have outstanding scores/soundtracks. I went with Nier. Mostly because I gave votes to Cuphead and P5 in other categories. But that's not a good thing to do, if something is the the best, it's the best. Nier is the game i played more recently so it's not even fair that it's fresh in my mind. But I honestly hold the music of these 3 games on the same pedestal of greatness so..yeah there's my poor justification. All 3 really deserve it.

I didn't vote for Odyssey because i don't have a Switch yet :( else it would probably sweep my choices.

Also it's weird how P5 was omitted from Best Narrative and how both P5 AND Nier Automata were omitted from the Games for Impact category. I'd argue both of those games are very thought provoking and Persona is absolutely pro-social.

  • @RayneSol I know right? I was really puzzled that Persona didn't make best narrative, and both P5 and Nier didn't make games for impact. I think the nominees listed probably all have great stories (I can't really tell I didn't play all of them), but I think both P5 and Nier have really strong stories. I'd argue that they're probably one of the strongest aspects of those games.

  • @michemagius Yeah. I say this as I finish Route C of Nier haha, it's great. In that category I think I voted for What Remains of Edith Finch. I didn't play it but I watched all of Huber's playthrough, it really hooked me. Maybe the jury felt P5 and Nier already held so many of the more prominent categories so they picked more less known yet still worthy titles for that category, probably.

  • @RayneSol I guess. I would just feel better about it If I felt P5 or Nier were clear front runners for the categories they were nominated in. I feel that either Persona 5 or Nier should win in the categories they are nominated for, but with tough competition there's no real guarantee that they'll win. It's gonna be hard for them to beat Mario, Cuphead, Zelda, or FFXV, which I feel all appeal more to a broader audience. Not that those games are better than Nier or P5, I just think more people played them.

  • @michemagius I agree that P5 and Nier are a bit more niche. I'm honestly happily surprised to see Persona 5 nominated for GOTY. But for me, BotW is about just as good, sometimes better, I really loved playing both of them this year. So if Zelda wins, i'd still be happy but that's more expected than if P5 wins. Even if Mario wins i'd be happy, love Mario. I'll play Odyssey one day.

  • @RayneSol I get where you're coming from. I wasn't as crazy about Zelda as most other people but I recognize that it's a very well made game and that its a big step forward for the franchise (even If I'm not super thrilled about the direction that step was in), and while I have yet to play Mario, everything I've seen of it makes me think that it's a phenomenal game. I just think P5 winning would be a really significant for JRPG's on the whole, and I do think it really deserves the win. But at the end of the day I can't say an undeserving game won GotY if Zelda or Mario take the title.

  • I will give the vote to these 2017 games:
    destiny 2
    Call of Duty: WWII
    Assassin's Creed Origins
    Mass Effect: Andromeda
    The Evil Within 2

  • Giving Best Audio or Best Performance to anything other than Hellblade will be a joke.

Same for Ongoing Game and Warframe. One of the games on that list isn't even finished, and another is a monumental step backward compared to it's previous game. Warframe is one of the most incredible evolutions of a game I've ever seen, and it is all totally free.

My GotY is going to Horizon though.

  • @El-Shmiablo said in The Game Awards 2017. Who has your vote?:

One of the games on that list isn't even finished, and another is a monumental step backward compared to it's previous game.

Last I checked Warframe still calls itself a Beta.

  • Yakuza 0 was definitely slighted. Will be curious to see if next year, Yakuza 6 with all it's improvements gets any nominations.

  • I'm cutting categories that mean nothing to me.

    From the nominations:

    GOTY: Mario Odyssey
    Direction: RE VII
    Narrative: NieR: Automata
    Art: Persona 5
    Score/Music: NieR: Automata
    Audio: RE VII
Games for Impact: Life is Strange: Before the Storm
    Handheld: Ever Oasis
    Action: Prey
    Action Adventure: Super Mario Odyssey
    RPG: Divinity: Original Sin 2
    Family: Super Mario Odyssey
Anticipated: Monster Hunter: World .... I guess.

    My personal picks:

    GOTY: Prey
    Direction: RE VII
Narrative: Life is Strange: Before the Storm
    Art: Gravity Rush 2
    Score/Music: NieR: Automata
    Audio: RE VII
Games for Impact: Life is Strange: Before the Storm
    Indie: Thimbleweed Park
Handheld: Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana
    Action: Prey
    Action Adventure: RE VII
    RPG: Divinity: Original Sin 2
    Family: Super Mario Odyssey
Anticipated: Fear Effect Reinvented / System Shock

  • @Sheria I was actually a bit surprised Gravity Rush 2 didn't make the Art category. That game has a very distinct and aesthetically pleasing style.

  • @Hazz3r That is semantics at this point. The "beta" has been going on for 6 years now. The game is very, very much a complete experience.
Meanwhile PUBG has optimization issues that even beastly rigs can't always brute force.

@michemagius Released too early in the year and too niche. Don't get me wrong I think the game is absolutely beautiful, but this has happened for years.

  • @El-Shmiablo But you literally can't access the final 4-5 Mastery Levels can you not? There is not enough content in the game for you to do so.

  • @Hazz3r There is more content in Warframe than most full retail games.
I know you are trying to argue the devil's advocate right now, but you are being silly.

  • @El-Shmiablo Amount of content compared to other games is inconsequential. There isn't enough content in the game in order to reach Mastery Level 30. Digital Extremes themselves say that the game isn't complete and it's still in Beta.

If people want to argue that PUBG shouldn't win because it's "not finished", despite over 2 million people playing the game every single day, then I will argue that Warframe shouldn't win because it is "not finished" despite it's wealth of already existing content

  • Banned

I'm not even remotely interested in the Circlejerk awards.
I already keep track of the industry all year long so I know what's good and what's bad.

That's not to say I don't appreciate the hard work that Geoff Keighley puts in to making it all work. Especially after the travesty that Spike once hosted.

  • @Hazz3r Okay.

@Art You mean you don't judge the games you play off of the amount of industry accolades they receive?
What are ya, some kinda communist?
