Pokemon Sword/Shield (Switch)

Some professional opinions about the Pokédex cuts, hopefully people start realizing that it's been a long time coming and it's not as easy as they think.

  • @axel I honestly never cared about transferring pokemon between games, every game is 100 percent stand alone fresh. i do think its odd though that people are paying for pokemon bank and so many of your pokemon are just gonna sit there

  • @bigdude1 They changing Bank to Home soon, and Home is going to have more features to interact with your Pokemon while they're being held in that service. Just waiting for them to announce it all.

  • That's SIR Weezing to you!

  • @mbun Even half-assed and bootleg Pikachu still warms my heart

  • New news out of nowhere Pokemon Worlds. No new Pokemon, but some new abilities and hold items that are pretty interesting as well as clarification on some secondary effects of Dynamax Moves.

    Pokemon Battle Stadium

In Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, you can connect to the internet and battle against Trainers from all over the world in the Battle Stadium. Features like Rental Teams and Online Competitions also allow for different ways to connect to other Pokémon Trainers.

In Ranked Battles, you can take on Pokémon Trainers from across the globe with a Battle Team you trained up, in an attempt to become the most powerful Trainer in the world! As the name implies, you will have a rank in Ranked Battles that indicates how strong you are as a Trainer. Your rank will change depending on the results of your battles! You’ll face Trainers of a similar rank, so your battles are sure to be challenging!

You can receive items by meeting certain criteria, such as battling multiple times in a row.

Rental Teams let you borrow Battle Teams easily by inputting IDs available online. You can use these rented Battle Teams in various different battles. You’ll also be able to make your own Battle Teams public to Pokémon Trainers all over the world!

You can use Rental Teams in Ranked Battles, too.

  • I like that Pokemon has a rent-a-goalie feature.

  • Sitting confirmed!!!
    Youtube Video

Sitting on benches was a feature first appearing in Gen 6, XY, but it was missing from the Gen 7, Sun and Moon games. It is a small touch yes, but it is good to see it return. That's obviously a very early game town we've seen parts of before, but I think it is looking pretty good, and I was digging the new music.

Will edit this later with more from the website and elsewhere. For now enjoy this madness made manifest:

    Alcremie Flavors and Flourish

Before I post website excerpts, enjoy more detailed trailer analysis than I could've covered:
    Youtube Video

Now for the extra website bits:

Surprise Trades can be carried out with players from around the world if you’re using the internet. But with local communication, you can even get a trade from someone around you before you know what’s happening! Head out to lots of different places, and see if you can get a Surprise Trade!

So this is interesting, because previously Wonder Trades were only available through online, but this means you can 3DS Streetpass style locally activate the rebranded Wonder Trades.

    Cute Art

I just really like this official art from the website.

Alcremie is known to be able to create whipped cream from its hands. Apparently, there are several variations of color and flavor for this whipped cream, as well as the decorations on Alcremie’s body.

Went into this with the chart above, but even more than that have been discovered since, and Serebii claims:

They are called flavours with only two names known: Vanilla Flavor and Matcha Flavor

Back to the official site, some Polteageist lore:

Polteageist’s body is made from black tea and is said to have a very distinct aroma and flavor. It will only allow a Trainer it trusts to sample its tea. However, drinking too much can lead to indigestion or an upset stomach, so be careful!

Many Polteageist make their homes inside hotels and restaurants, disguising themselves and hiding among the tableware. They can pour their power into leftover tea and create even more of their kind, so they’re often treated as pests.

Tried not to repeat too much from the GameXplain analysis, but worth reiterating that the dart fish with the mustache the new bird Pokemon shoots out is most definitely also a new Pokemon in itself, which I find it funny they didn't bother to even talk about, giving an entirely new meaning to "throw away" regional fish Pokemon. Also, a relevant spoiler from the previously many times over confirmed leak below:

Surprised the Direct didn't mention this, but the new bird Pokemon can also sometimes instead catch a Pikachu in its mouth when using Surf or Dive, probably as a reference to Surfing Pikachu. I do wonder if this will change the damage of the Pokemon's ability when it triggers, possibly even add a Paralysis chance to the bonus hit, or maybe even cause the ability to backfire and damage the bird Pokemon instead. The leak was unclear, but the leaker clearly mentioned this Pokemon along with this bonus information that hasn't been revealed yet. This was also stated to be the leaker's favorite among the new Pokemon.

    Site info here

Only Farfetch'd that have survived many battles can attain this evolution. When this Pokémon's leek withers, it will retire from combat.

The Farfetch’d of the Galar region can evolve into Sirfetch'd after experiencing many battles. They are calm and collected, and they make a point of always battling fairly. They are so noble in battle that they are often chosen as a motif for paintings. Of particular note is a painting—famous in the Galar region—that depicts a duel between a Sirfetch'd and an Escavalier.

In battle, Sirfetch'd uses the sharp stalk of its leek as a lance and the thick leaves as a shield. It maintains this leek over the span of many years and treasures it more than anything. When its leek finally withers, Sirfetch'd will leave the battlefield and retire from battling entirely.

Meteor Assault is a new move introduced in these games that only Sirfetch'd can learn! Sirfetch'd points its leek at the opponent and charges toward them at great speed. This move is devastatingly powerful! However, it appears that the move also puts great strain on Sirfetch'd. It will be unable to take action immediately after using this move.

    Lance

  • Kyle is going to love this. But Sword exclusive, wasn't he gonna get Shield? The dilemma of a lifetime.

  • I was already leaning towards Sword. Feel pretty locked in after this one.

    Website "Glitch" Page

They drew it out a bit long, but this was a very cute way to reveal a new Pokemon and added flavor beyond just dumping a new video or tweeting it. I hope they continue to experiment like this. Unfortunately, a leaker ruined this one ahead of time, but the idea behind this was solid and comparable to the Meltan reveal.

Last thing of note for now I'll talk about is there's a Japanese Poll that ends in 2 days roughly asking people who have preordered the game whether or not they want the Starter Evolutions revealed before launch. Right now it is pretty overwhelmingly yes slanted. GameFreak / TPC at least seems aware of what they did before the Sword and Shield launch and are attempting to hold more back this time or at least ask the audience if they want certain spoilers before revealing them, and I find that admirable and worth pointing out, especially when people take the less frequent reveals as the final game having less content than previous ones instead of them just holding back so not everything is spoiled before launch.

  • Not much of an update, but they released this gimmick program to add Dynamax sized Pokemon to the background of pictures you take.

  • Another awesome way of doing unconventional reveals for Sword and Shield.

  • Now Krabby are invading the preorder only club website for Sword and Shield.

  • Game Informer has lots of Pokemon coverage this month.

Here's some info coming out of it I'll try to update as more releases, but visit them above for the full stories:

The Core team at GameFreak making the Pokemon games has doubled since Sun and Moon, with about 200 members now
This does not include outsourced and external partners, the marketing department, or the 9 language localization teams
Estimated total number of names credited in Sword and Shield is thought to actually be somewhere around 1,000 strong

EXP Share is no longer an item, similar to Pokemon Let's Go party Pokemon get equal EXP share, and no info if you can turn it off

Sword and Shield introduces Autosave to Pokemon finally, but you can turn it off and still Save Manually if you prefer

Galar is introducing a way to make the Pokemon you get attached to over the course of your journey competitively viable
They specifically mentioned "personality" which sounds like being able to swap a Pokemon's Nature for more ideal ones
Previous games introduced a way to Max IVs for battle and swap a Pokemon's abilities, but they were very tedious

Max raid battles have different difficulties denoted by star ratings and the higher ones might be challenging

HMs won't be in Pokemon Sword and Shield, because one goal of these games is a higher degree of freedom, hence the Wild Area

They've said this before, but previously GameFreak was forced to scrap new features to maintain every Pokemon in every game
This is why games going forward will be a thoughtful selection of existing and new Pokemon instead of them all from every game
The selection of Pokemon in future games will eventually include whatever favorite doesn't make Sword and Shield's Regional Dex
National Dex still isn't coming back, and they're not patching Pokemon in as DLC, but no Pokemon are being scrapped forever either
The decision resulted from collaborative talks between GameFreak, The Pokemon Company, and Nintendo over the future of Pokemon

They still aren't ready to talk about Pokemon Home, the beefed up successor to Pokemon Bank, but it should help the NatDex situation

Remakes aren't going anywhere and will still be released between the games in new Regions with new Pokemon

The full issue this month for Game Informer has even more information, but you have to subscribe to see it. People are reporting certain excerpts from that, but people are clearly confused between certain points and reporting them differently, so the following is a mixed bag of speculation from the sense I'm trying to make of what I've seen reported:

There are 18 Gyms between Sword and Shield with a Minor League and a Major League in each game
Whether a Gym is in the Minor League or Major League in the Galar Region swaps between versions
Lorewise. the idea is that, like sports teams, the strength of Gyms will vary between League Seasons
Traditionally, each Pokemon League Circuit consisted of 8 Pokemon Gyms for each Region
So it is likely that 4 Gyms will be exclusive to a version of the game, 2 exclusive per game
Or instead of 8 Gyms per League Circuit, there will now be 9 Gyms per League Circuit

Edit: GameFreak contacted GameInformer over this. It was a mistranslation all along. There's only 8 Gyms in Sword and Shield or probably 9-10 total between them if you count some versions having exclusive ones like the Fighting Gym in Sword and the Ghost Gym in Shield.
