Miyazaki movies

Yeah, I don't like VLC either. That video is funny. MPC-HC isn't getting updated anymore, but I'll keep using it until it's no longer compatible.
Ugh, I want this...
Too expensive, though.

What do you guys think of "Howl's Moving Castle"? I saw the promo last week and thought I might take my 9 year old daughter.
-
Also, what is the best collection of the movies to get? I remember Damiani saying there is a best and worst version on the stream last week.
-
@travelingsnowman Howl's Moving Castle has fantastical characters, but I think it is aimed for a slightly older audience with everything going on in that movie. Hard to detail without spoiling anything. Not as intense as Princess Mononoke, but a level under that.
what is the best collection of the movies to get?
I have no clue. I think he was saying the old DVDs for the ones Disney had rights to distribute in the States, because the Bluray versions had worse music or something. All I know is the best Ghibli Collection is absurdly expensive, and I don't think you'll find it in any stores stateside.
-
@travelingsnowman I think Howl might by okay for a 9 year old. Has she seen The Lion King? I think the stampede sequence in The Lion King is more intense than anything in Howl. It's personally not one of my favorites (think the characters, script, and story are all on the weaker side), but it has great music and art.
As for collections... As others have said, it depends on how much you're willing to put down.
-
@travelingsnowman Howl is personally my favorite Miyazaki movie, and I probably saw it around 9 so It's definitely not innapropriate or anything. It's much more of a slow burn if I remember correctly, so don't expect a lot of excitement right out of the gate.

I upgrade my Ghibli DVDs to BD from time to time. Since the Disney deal has ended, I can get ones with 7-10€/a movie. I always watched them subtitled with japanese audio and even if they are usually in mono instead of stereo, I still prefer them that way.
I also like Miyazaki's movies better that came out before 2000 but I wouldn't say later ones are bad or anything and even Spirited Away got an Oscar thanks to people recognizing the anime being a big thing from there on.
Do GKids release them on BD now there since Disney deal is off or are they only doing theatrical releases?
-
Gkids has the blu rays now, and IMO they look and sound better than the Disney releases. I think they scanned them from restored original negatives in many cases.

Awesome movies, but man they don't come cheap and no VOD options.

Howl's Moving Castle is Miyazaki's worst movie, but it's not bad.

Well it's the first one I can take my daughter to in the theatre. I'd rather some of the others but they're so hard or expensive to get, this is a good option.
-
Howl is fantastic y'all are crazy.
-
Definitely take them to see Kiki as well.. that's one of my favorites from Miyazaki and super underrated in my opinion
Also.. maybe better for when they're a bit older but don't forget Takahata!
-
I know this is a Miyazaki thread, and it's definitively worth watching them, but if I may I would also suggest looking into Mamoru Hosoda's movies, three of them have recently been added to Netflix, but specially the one that came out recently Mirai I think is great for kids, he's personally my favorite japanese director and all of his is great.
-
@bard91 Not to get too far off track, but I think Summer Wars is my favorite.
-
While we're dumping nonGhibli, I'd recommend Into the Forest of Fireflies' Light for kids if you can find it anywhere. Lu Over the Wall is also very good.
-
@tokyoslim I really need to watch that one of these days. All I know about it is that it's basically Our War Game without the Digimon, and I love Our War Game, so it sounds up my alley.

Thanks everyone! I've had such a great experience with my daughter. We went and saw Howl's Moving Castle in the theatre for Ghiblifest. She and I both loved it.
Then we were able to get the Secret World of Arrietty from the library to watch at home. Good, not as good as Howl but good to watch with my younger son as well.
EZA is a fantastic community and I can't thank you enough for your recommendations!
PS next step is getting her to get off the Dubs and onto Subs!

My Neighbor Totoro tonight. It was...weird. Kids liked it. Kiki is next on the list!
Thankfully library has a bunch of these movies but they're the Disney versions. Oh well, good enough for noobs.
