Final Fantasy VII Remake

  • I really don't like the choice to release the game in episodes. There are episodic games that I enjoy, but it worked for me when it played on leaving you hanging and keen to know what happens next. The trouble here is that we already know the full story, so not only will episode 1 leave the player feeling hard done by due to the whole thing feeling cut off and incomplete, but it wont be able to rely on the cliff hanger trick that episodic media relies upon.

One could argue for new players that are yet familiar with the game, but I seriously don't see them as being the primary audience for this remake. Final Fantasy hasn't been the stand out name it was for a while and Jrpg's aren't really the thing anymore for young gamers. A remake of the seventh game, for a franchise in a genre that sadly isn't in any limelight anymore just isn't going to do it. Let's face it, this I purely for the long term fans here.

  • Is there much chance a PC version of this launches alongside the PS4 version?

  • @binarymelon
Possibly, depending of that deal is still in effect

  • @binarymelon Probably an Epic Game Store exclusive. 😜

  • @sazime YES! I want to see the internet on that day.

  • So me and a classmate in my web development class were talking during some down time about how the combat system and we came up with what she called "Limit Break Enhancement" along with how we think combat currently works, and some thoughts on materia.

    • The Yellow bars will probably fill as you either take or dish out damage, while the limit break bar is empty you'll do a heavy attack of some kind probably a slow attack that will leave you open to attack but will fill the Limit bar's much faster.
*When you do have a limit bar filled, it's possible moves will have new effects to better accommodate the 3D combat such as some moves getting a small bit of AOE to them.
*Some moves that were originally limit breaks will probably be just regular combat moves, I remember Cloud having a move that acted like Stinger in DMC. So use that as one example.
*Materia will function like the Command Deck system from Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep and Dream Drop Distance, only there will be no cool down periods for most of them, so long as you have the MP for it. Only the strongest of magic skills will have a cool down period.
*You can junction materia with limit breaks giving them unique effects, such as attaching fire to Braver causing a small geyser of fire to rise when hitting the enemy, or Barret's big shot healing him when attached to a Cure Materia.

  • The Episodic nature of the game has little to do with wanting to preserve the story or anything, it's just that they don't want to wait 10 years for this game to come out.

  • The concert seemed to have offered a new trailer and THE RELEASE DATE! March 3rd, 2020. More to come in 16 hrs.

  • Weird time to announce the date, but I'll take it. Also, I betted against this so I'm scoffing even more.

  • @bam541
Sorta expected a "more to come tomorrow " tbh but hey. Now let's see if Square sticks to it.

  • @e_zed_eh_intern i think its been confirmed to be two parts first ending at junon harbour

  • @ff7cloud
They haven't said when or how many parts it might be, although Junon sounds like a good point

  • @dmcmaster oh ok I may have been mistaken i just remember hearing something about it being 2 parts

  • Did you freaking see this new showing?! This project is literally becoming more unbelievable the more real it's getting. Holy fuck, I tell you. This looks amazing! And Tifa. She's just perfect. Perfect. How is this all possible. The amount of literally EVERYTHING in this game. I don't know if I can handle this. :)

  • Kinda disappointed it's not the Advent Children cast, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt for now.

  • It's unbelievable how this game looks like everyone's wildest dreams. I couldn't picture a better way to remake this game.

I've been thinking about how they'll handle the episodic format, and I have a feeling they won't do it like most people seem to be expecting. The Allies were wondering whether people could grind to level 99 while waiting for episode 2, but here's my take:

The games, whether there's 2 or 3 in total, will actually be completely separate games, not episodes. More like Mass Effect 1, 2 and 3.

So when you play FF 7 - Episode 2, you won't carry over your characters from the first game. The characters will have a new starting point in terms of progression, the combat system will be tweaked from one game to the next, etc. That gives them more flexibility to make each new entry even more exciting but also keep them cleanly separate from each other.

As to how to handle the open-world, I think they might also limit where you can and can't go in each episode, again keeping the content unique to one title or the other. You won't re-enter Midgar in Episode 2.

It would be too risky business-wise to expect people to play through episode 1 before they can even play episode 2, and so on. Especially considering Episode 2 is extremely likely to be next-gen. It would be a logistical nightmare to manage an episodic game in the vein of Life Is Strange across multiple generations of consoles.

So I really believe next year's game will wrap up nicely after 30-40 hours and be its own game with a satisfying ending, and a cliffhanger. Then the sequel will come a year or two later and be its own game too, and so on.

    Does that make any sense?

  • @axel It does and I think those are realistic ideas but I hope you're partly wrong. I hope it that, by the final episode you can go everywhere. Also, while I agree it would be tough to tell people to play episode 1 before 2 etc, I hope they give you the option to either carry over characters, equipment etc or to start the game at or near the previous episode's level cap with the equipment you would have ended with had you not done side quests. For example, Cloud might have the best weapon you could buy in a shop in the previous episode but not Ultima Weapon or Apocalypse. Does THAT make sense?

  • Just absolutely blown away by Final Fantasy VII at E3 this year.

I think this game managed to give me this sensation that I used to feel as a kid early last generation (2006-2009) around E3. Its an honest gut reaction to feel excited and joyous. I want to pour over YouTube looking for off-cam footage or whatever I can get of the gameplay demo on the show floor.

Last time I felt this way was E3 2011 when Dark Souls had the Gargoyle demo and there was a ton of off camera footage that I picked through on the User Videos on GameTrailers. Unrelated, but legend has it that only one person finished the Dark Souls demo in the whole E3 week. But YEAH! I have this honest to goodness excitement for FF7 Remake and its bringing me back to good times during middle school, in my bedroom just watching tons and tons of gaming videos and not being able to wait for Christmas to get a PS3. All before I became jaded and more focused on making dinner after work instead of heading straight to the internet to consume every last drop of E3.

Cannot wait and I might get the special edition with the statue.

  • I've stayed out of the topic for too long because I'm so self-conscious about espousing my love for this game so much. So all I'll add is:

Yeah. I threw down the $350. Best E3 demo for me.
