please correct me if I'm wrong Axel, is the single highest placing game in any GOTY list we've ever done that did NOT get a SINGLE GOTY vote?!
I'm saving my comments on that for my "stats and fun facts" post after we're done with the reveals but... yup, it is, and it's disgusting it beat out the true GOTY Fire Emblem in such a shameful manner :(
-
Wow, number 3 by sheer volume!
-
@axel It's alright. Speaking as someone who knew my choices weren't going to place high, take solace that what matters is we enjoyed the games we did.
........
But a game not getting a GOTY vote this high is hilarious. X-D
-
Well sometimes it's more about getting a ton of people to play a game and it being good rather than it being more niche and being great.
-
Probably would have placed higher on my list if I have finished it. Played about 10 hours & loved it. Then stopped playing for some reason. There's something missing from this game I can't figure out what it is. Still nice to see obsidian finally get the mainstream recognition they deserve.
-
Outer Words is the game "we" needed and for the most part it delivered.
-
I don't like Fallout games and I tried this because the developer showcase was fun. I finished this game and hated a lot of parts of the game and story.
-
With this, I think Obsidian beat Bethesda at their own game! They did New Vegas before but a lot of it still feels like a Bethesda game. With this, they differentiated enough with the art style and how the game feels to play, but still having the Bethesda first person RPG feel.
Of course, the writing and story part is the strongest here. I haven't beat the game yet, but I have played 15+ hours of it, and so far I'm very impressed by how well it's written, and also how interesting the setting is. It's a bleak, yet ridiculous world. The locales that are explorable are varied enough, with distinctive enough vibes to separate them. The characters are awesome too, Parvati is easily one of my favorite characters this year. I also like that some characters have the best banter when they're paired with each other, like Nyoka and Parvati.
The combat feels nice, gunplay feel snappy enough and there's a lot of weapon variety. The impact of the guns is okay. The science weapons are fun to use, but that's kinda it. Overall it's not the best FPS combat ever, but it's good enough and that's all that matters to me.
I also like how well paced the progression feels. Focusing on specific stats is certainly rewarded, and being able to get what you want because you're just too good at persuading people is so goddamn satisfying (as the allies aptly described on a Frame Trap episode).
The one thing that I don't know how to feel about is the companion abilities. I just never felt the need to use the abilities, so I can't really say much about it since I only used it once on accident. Maybe that's my fault, maybe that's the game fault, I don't know.
With voting for this game, I broke a rule that I usually go by when voting for stuff like in this Top 25, which is prioritizing games that I have finish. But I have no regrets for voting this game, I love it so much and despite not having the full experience yet, I just enjoy it too much.

I am THRILLED this placed so high. I love the Outer Worlds, so much so that it has encouraged me to maintain a Game Pass Ultimate Subscription for a good few months now. I'm yet to finish the game but have played quite a lot thanks to the lure of different characters and builds. It mirrors one of the things that is actually great about Fallout 4. It doesn't allow you to create a super soldier that's good at everything. If you want to be good as something, you have to specialise.
Having super low intelligence and going around the world as basically a big, dumb, strong mercenary. chef kiss

@paulmci27
same loved it though also stopped after 10-15 hours, honnestly the introduction of the MkII weapons kinda took some of the wind out of my sails for some reason.

TOW is a really good game that pushes the RPG genre by allowing an omni-directional ability to do and discuss anything with any character and the game will adapt around it. The only other game with the level of freedom would be Divinity II but not even that game has all of the writing to match your limitless freedom.
TOW is held back by smaller worlds that get a bit fetch questy and don't offer compelling reasons to explore every nook. This is especially true because looting just isn't immersive like, say, Fallout or TES. TOW uses Bioshock-style quick looting which sort of makes this game feel just as much of a shooter as it is an RPG. In my opinion, its for worse.
-
I did not expected Outer Worlds to be so high on the list, is a good game, and better than Fallout 4 for me
-
The level of freedom, the ability to beat the game in a short amount of time, and replay-value sold me on Outer Worlds.
The combat and the inventory system need tweaking even though they're both solid.

So far my Goty pick has never won in these forum picks. Re2 vs Sekiro just like EZA and Patreon.

And alas, we've reached another end to another great GOTY countdown! Between the two, it was pretty obvious at the start of the thread, but personally not necessarily the beginning of this year. Both were highly anticipated, and clearly lived up to the hype. Game Awards 2017, seeing the Allies lose their minds over "Shadows Die Twice." E3 2018 during the Sony presser, and everything slowly dawning on everyone. And the yell when Leon revealed himself. Classic stuff.
For the games themselves, I'm not into From games and only because of Huber and Damiani have I experienced Resident Evil in any capacity. VII, 4, 2 Remake, and then 5. I really enjoyed watching the full playthrough stream (and I'm anticipating the RE 3 Remake stream, so I'm choosing to bypass the current Mike and Mike stream to go in completely fresh). Seeing RE 2 Remake in its entirety with someone who is so passionate about the game makes me appreciate it more. I may not have played it but I enjoyed it, and actually have the feeling of rewatching it. Greatly hate Mr. X though.
Now as is custom, here's my full list with some words on the games that didn't place:
- Kingdom Hearts III
- Gears 5
- Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
- Observation
- Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled
- Metro: Exodus
- Borderlands 3
- Creature in the Well
- Wolfenstein: Youngblood
Wolfenstein Youngblood didn't make an Honorable Mention and if I would've been told that at the beginning of the year, I wouldn't have believed it. Arkane and MachineGames are two of my shortlist of favorite developers. This is one of my favorite franchises. The Blazkowicz twins are the best part of this game. But horrible story pacing, questionable level design, confounding story implementation, and most egregiously the RPG level system was just a fail. Disappointment of the Year and it feels bad.
Creature in the Well is a really interesting concept and the fact most of it was made by two guys is astounding. I met one of them while I watched a good friend of mine play it at PAX East last year and it's one of the highlights of my entire 2019. The game feels more luck than skill based in the final couple of dungeons, but the action-pinball mechanic is one of the most unique things I've enjoyed. What's here is good, but I'm VERY excited, and hope for, a follow up.
Observation piqued my interest when I first saw the trailer during the first State of Play, buy Ian playing the first 20 minutes for Easy Update hooked me. A game to play in about 6-8 hours, playing as a station's A.I. is another fascinating concept I enjoyed. There was a puzzle that was unnecessarily annoying, and the ending landed with a thud for me, but this is still a standout game that messes with your head, and I'm happy I gave it a shot.
As always, massive kudos and thanks to @Axel for always taking the initiative with these threads. I look forward to the next!

All my votes made the list. I think that's a first for me. Resident Evil 2 is definitely a worthy winner. A few games just happened to resonate with me more than RE2 did.

I don't play many multiplayer only games like Apex Legends and Tetris 99. And I didn't play enough of any last year to put on my list.
Thanks again to @Axel for putting these together. I'll be there again for the next GOTY vote.
