The EZA Community Top 25 Best of 2019!

  • @axel It makes me happy to know I helped increase its appeal just a little bit. The "been there, done that," universal critique I've heard I feel applies to the actual gameplay of taking cover and flanking your opponent. Yet, this game adds a couple of interesting weapons (including a new type of Lancer) and a vehicle which opens up the campaign's structure unlike any other Gears game.

But it's the story and a couple of fascinating twists that really elevate it for me. I've been a die hard Gears fan for a decade, so of course I have my bias and as such this and my above post must be taken with the appropriate salt, but I can't sing the game's praises enough.

If you DO decide to give it a try, I would recommend to get through a portion of Act II. By then, you should have experienced enough to decide whether to see it through or drop it.

  • @axel You don't need to wait for sale, just get Xbox Game Pass for PC for $1.

  • Gears 5 is my #10 of 36. Multiplayer wasn’t for me, but I really, really liked the campaign. Can’t say much about the story, but there were so many tiny moments when you expected something to happen and something else did. Like (and this is just one of many examples) when everything tells you that the wave of enemies is over, and then a few new enemies comes in and characters comment on it. Also driving the Skiff is my best gameplay of 2019.

So why it’s only my #10? It was fun, but not memorable for me. I mean it’s better than Gears of War 4 and much better than the rest of the franchise, but I will not play it again. Also there were a lot of bugs when I played it. Most notably, there were 1-second freezes during cut-scenes (but none during the gameplay) and I was playing on a new PC with SSD drive.

  • I've tried a few Gears games in the past but could never get into them, but I decided to give this one a try on Game Pass. To my surprise I really got into the story & for me the open areas changed up the pace of the game in a way I liked even though they were largely empty it gave me a sense of being in a World. This game reminded me of Uncharted 4 more than any other I think its equally as good. One last thing the game is drop dead gorgeous to look at. Total eye candy.

  • Gears is an awesome and misunderstood franchise, so I'm just glad to see that 5 was actually able to crack this year's Top 25 when 4 couldn't in 2016.

@Brannox - My biggest issue was that plot point as well, I feel the same way. It would be interesting to see a breakdown of who did like and who didn't with regards to their level of familiarity with the series.

  • @miserableperson Oh I've heard enough talk to know one choice was overwhelmingly picked over the other.

  • @brannox Oh me too, I'm simply talking about that moment as a concept in a Gears game.

  • Back to back games from my list are showing up! Of my list of nine, this was 5th, so it just missed out on making my top four. This game ran flawlessly and it was fun revisiting a game from my childhood. Sadly, there wasn't enough to this game to last beyond a weekend. Because I played on PS4, I don't have an online account for it (plus I don't play multiplayer most of the time), but Adventure mode and Gem Cups were super fun to do.

This game's post launch life is hot and cold what with adding Spyro, but also infuriating microtransactions. But outside of those things, the game controls well and if you can catch on with the learning curve and learn to drift boost every second, flying around many of the tracks is super fun. But I still hate Oxide.

With the run of Crash and Spyro remasters/remakes (whatever you want to call them), I'm looking forward to new games in the series.

Shout-outs to @Hazz3r, @iboshow, @Hanabi, @Lotias, and @NeoCweeny for liking it enough to make your lists!

  • @paulmci27 I'm like that too, first Gears I really tried too but couldn't get into. Then 4 I actually enjoyed, some moments more than others, and 5 it's a proper great game. I love the dark moody parts, like when you're exploring the lab. And the environmental storytelling is some of the best I've ever seen. The open spaces work great and I like they're not too cluttered with stuff.

  • Can't wait for the next Crash/Spyro game from Activision. I wonder if they will do something original or remake another classic Activision I.P.

  • Didn't realize CTR was eligible. Soooo... why exactly is it? That said, it wouldn't have made it into my Top8, so no harm done.
It was great to return to all those tracks in any case after so many years, a super good summer game.

@brannox Thank you! Yeah I initally wanted to put it higher on my list, but there were just too many good new games that I wanted to put higher.

  • @sentinel-beach It's a full remake, like Resident Evil 2 or Link's Awakening or the Crash Bandicoot N Sane Trilogy, etc.

  • I still gotta try the new CTR but I don’t have too many opportunities to play games on the couch anymore so I might hold off until that opportunity arises.

  • CTR is the fucking bomb and I love that I can play it again without having to pull out my PS3. I love that it has such a high bar on the Normal difficulty. It demands excellence and really sets you up with the need to perfect the execution of racing.

    Also, it's absolutely gorgeous.

One of the few games of 2019 that I actually played.
Absolutely incredible remake, and a serious contender for the best kart game of all time.

Some might argue that the microtransactions are a bit much, but all of it is cosmetic and earnable through regular play, so I'm personally not too up in arms about it. I don't mind having an almost unlimited supply of stuff to unlock.

  • I remember way back when this got announced at PSX and hearing one guy in the crowd LOSE HIS MIND about it coming back. And since?

    Nothing really.

Then it came out, I watched Damiani's review, and moved on. But I was surprised at how many different times it was brought up in the deliberations, especially in the Music categories. It clearly is a good enough game to stand on its own merits, but it's one of those kinds of games that feel like it comes from nowhere, makes an impact at the moment, and disappears. Weird feeling.

  • I think I've decided to pick this up and play it. Jpeg Dog will live on!
