Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 (PS4/Xbox One/PC)

  • I feel like it's a catch 22 because people that keep up with skateboarding to this day don't need this basic knowledge but people (like me) that don't, don't especially care because they just wanna play a fun video game aren't gonna be interested in this information anyway. Like I'll be brutally honest I'm sure Riley and Leticia deserve a spot in something like this and are cool additions for people in the first group, but I'm just gonna keep playing as either my custom guy or Rodney Mullen anyway (unless I unlock some weird-ass guest characters like spider-man or darth maul in the older games.) That said, there is one way to get people in the second group to care: show, don't tell. I guess it would make it feel like less of a reward for finishing the game as that person, but posting the video you get for these new skaters would be a much better sell than a paragraph that looks like it came out of some 8th grader's English essay.

  • Yeah like basically any YouTube video or Instagram clip of their skating would’ve done more than their write ups haha

Kotaku Ranked the Tony Hawk games from Worst to Best:

It's a pretty good listing but I disagree with THPG being lower than THPS HD. That game was a mess.

I also disagree with this statement: "In a lot of ways Pro Skater 4 is just more Pro Skater 3. They look similar, feel nearly the same, and use a lot of the same tricks [...] But as a follow-up to THPS3, it felt a bit too samey and unfocused."

THPS4 was only similar to THPS3 in the sense you still choose a Pro Skater and upgrade their stats. The levels were MASSIVE, layered, and had an entirely different set of objectives. It is known as being the most difficult of the series on Normal settings and was probably the biggest leap and deviation from the formula. Once you beat the game, it opens up into a NG+ will entirely new hardcore difficulty objectives. It's like two full games. Not sure how they landed on it feeling the same.

My Order from Worst to Best:

    14/13 - Ride / Shred

    12 - Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 5

11- Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD Remastered

    10 - Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam

    9 - Tony Hawk's Proving Ground

    8 - Tony Hawk's Pro Skater

    7 - Tony Hawk's Project 8

    6 - Tony Hawk's Underground 2

    5 - Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2

    4 - Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3

    3 - Tony Hawk's American Wasteland

    2 - Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4

    1 - Tony Hawk's Underground

God I love this series. I'd say they're all good in my list from 10 down. Downhill Jam is actually decently fun but definitely not a Tony Hawk game by any stretch. It's like a knock off SSX or Downhill Domination.

Also the GBA version of Underground and the DS version of American Wasteland (titled: American Sk8Land) are pretty fun too. I think Vicarious Visions made those as well.

  • Just pre ordered it, now to wait for the demo

  • THPS virtual concert coming up. The full soundtrack will be announced during it.

  • Merkules is maybe the only good Canadian underground rapper. Cool to see him on there.

  • Anyone make a list of the new music?

  • @dmcmaster

It's still a bit vague and confusing. They list specific new songs at the end of the Noisey video, but then they have this official poster out which seems to have bands that weren't listed in the Noisey video. Kotaku previously confirmed with Activision that the following 5 songs from the original games won't be available:

    • "Cyco Vision" - Suicidal Tendencies (THPS1)
    • "Committed" – Unsane (THPS1)
    • "Bring the Noise" - Anthrax and Chuck D (THPS2)
    • "B-Boy Document ’99" - The High & Mighty featuring Yasiin Bey & Mad Skillz (THPS2)
    • "Out With The Old" - Alley Life featuring Black Planet (THPS2)

But on the contrary, as of this promo material from yesterday, seems like either a different song by Anthrax and Suicidal Tendencies will be in the soundtrack, or these specific ones WILL in fact be in there. Still sad to see B-Boy Document missing, I love that tune.

Here is the poster and below it, I'll post screen caps from the Noisey video:

I can't post screen shots cause the Noisey video is suddenly unavailable. My god music licensing...

There is a Spotify playlist but even some of the songs are unavailable on there haha.

I'm glad the new songs are in-line with the punk rock, underground hip hop vibe of the original games. Good to see Less Than Jake, Sublime, Billy Talent, FIDLAR, Merkules, Skepta, and a few others on there.

The new Machine Gun Kelly song sounds like The Killers meets Taking Back Sunday meets Bloc Party, but each with some sort of horrible deformation. I might have to mute that one when I get the game.

    EDIT 2:

Uhhhh so OpenCritic of all places seems to be the only place that lists the full damn soundtrack:

I get not having Bring The Noise, that seemed like it would be difficult right away. Out With The Old and Committed getting cut hurts, but I can handle those.

But Suicidal Tendencies - Cyco Vision is on the same level as New Girl and Police Truck for me. It's like having an ear cut off. :-(

    Youtube Video

    VERY good news. :)

I had kinda hoped the amount of buzz the game's been getting would loosen up the pursestrings...

  • Found this scrolling Instagram. Tony Hawk out here being a classy legend:

  • Some gameplay footage
    Youtube Video

  • Kinda Funny Games went IN on this THPS discussion. They might be the only media outlet I'm aware of that has the knowledge and game-by-game breakdown of the little nuances the series introduced over time. Never know they were this into the TH franchise. This was a treat to listen to.

Tim Played Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 Remake! - First Impressions
    Youtube Video

  • I know they showed gameplay already, but man this game just looks so good. Skater XL haven't showed up in my region's PSN store so I'm feeling the extra itch for this, especially with what the KF guys said about the demo.

  • @dipset
The guy I posted above spends every October posting nothing but THPS content, just a fyi

  • @dmcmaster Yeah this guy is awesome. Bout to watch his "Every Tony Hawk Level RANKED!" video. Can't believe there are 165 levels in the series. I remember pretty much all of them being really good except a few in THPS1 and some the contest levels in THPS3.

  • Watching some more gameplay and I kinda like the little "Woo Hoos!" When landing special tricks

  • Played a bit of the demo. Tony is Back, everything just feels right. Also there's modifiers to limit the tricks/controls to what was available in THPS1 and 2

  • @dmcmaster said in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 (PS4/Xbox One/PC):

Also there's modifiers to limit the tricks/controls to what was available in THPS1 and 2

Which I absolutely will not do. A friend from my first year in university had the old shitty THPS Remake or whatever the hell it was called and I can't believe they opted to force those controls instead of use the modern ones.

I ended up watching the entire 165 Levels Ranked video while I worked late into last night. There are soooooooo many levels I completely forget in THPS1 & 2. I'm almost concerned that this game has too much to live up to. There are some bizarre ones like "Streets" which has potential to be completely dated and bad if they follow it 1:1, as well as some really cool ones that I forgot about like "Roswell" which are so weird and outlier which has me curious how they'll adapt it.

Also can't wait to see Philadelphia in THPS2. Pretty sure the THPS2 version had Love Park and FDR in one map. Love Park is dead in 2020 so it's actually a relic.

  • WOW! So I finally got my hands on it. I don’t know how to say this other than the intro video sent a chill up and down then up my spine and I began to get emotional.

They did a remix of the Guerrilla Radio intro montage from THPS2 and they way it starts up with a 50 year old Tony and the new logo, then proceeds to run through all the skaters including old and NEW footage of the classic pro skaters.

The video winds down and the ‘press start’ menu starts up immediately into demo gameplay with ‘Superman’ playing in the back.

I’m not joking you, this got me choked up in a way no game has in a long time. This is my version of how important FF7:R is to some people.
