The EZA Community Top 25 Best of 2010!

  • @tokyoslim I played Yakuza 3 on HD collection. While I loved Revelations and some story moments, the gameplay was clunky and easily the worst with enemies blocking too much. It was a PS3 game that still felt like a PS2 game. I did like guns doing more damage than other 2 on the collection which were bad.

  • @crepe

I got Black Ops and that;s when I stopped playing COD for almost 10 years. The graphics were worse than COD4 and MW2 on PS3 (sub HD). Screen tear, frame drops, and general muddy graphics.

The story was a good classic thriller plot which I liked, but the gameplay was infuriatingly scripted. Not like Uncharted how you still have to control the set piece moments, but like on-the-rails can't die scripted.

Multiplayer was fun for like 10 hours before it got samey. MW2 was a disaster with easy cheap kills with cheap perks and kill streaks. Black Ops went the other direction based on feedback. I respect them listening to MW2 feedback, but it went so far in the other direction with everything. Perks are so vanilla, killstreaks are less exciting, and the big maps almost felt weird with so little action happening.

They have some classic maps like Nuke Town and Firing Range, but there was always this sort of B-Tier step backwards feeling that the Treyarch games had in that era. World at War felt like anime filler compared to COD4 and same with Black Ops compared to MW2.

They made a solid 7/10 but Black Ops killed my mood for COD for almost 10 years. I think they are in a better place with the resurgence of Infinity Ward and COD MW.

    Honorable Mentions:

    Kirby's Epic Yarn

    Yay! :)

  • My list:

#1 Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth

#2 Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker
Surprised Peace Walker didn't make the list. Sure it was on handheld but it was such an amazing game with interesting mechanics.

    #3 Lost Planet 2
This game was so much fun but there was a level pretty early on that required a good team play which I sometimes failed because someone got kicked out and made it frustrating to get through. It had some serious hidden stuff that really elevated the game if you knew how to do it. Also taught my cousin a skill that got him a world record at the time on one of time attack stages but has probably been beaten since you can cheat on it somehow.
This is probably one of my favorite co-op game simply because there is not many like it.

    #4 Vanquish

    HMs:
    Gran Turismo 5
Didn't play enough of it but I always loved GT games

    Valkyria Chronicles II
Co-op lets you basically have an extra character so it was pretty easy but soloing was fine too. I loved the classes that split to pick which speciality to go for so it was really fun. Escort missions were the big minus but I didn't mind the cliché high school setting outside of awful laugh from protagonist Avan.

    Yakuza 3

    Mafia II
This was a really good game and I like some music from that era. Big fan of Dean Martin. Sadly lack of side stuff and freedom puts it behind other stuff

  • And that's a wrap for 2010, and for the 2010s decade!

I'm really happy we had 43 voters, that's the 4th highest participation in these threads so far, good job everyone!

86 games were nominated, which is the 2nd highest total (behind 2014's 96 games, get out of here 2014!), but only 4th highest average per voter.

Here are the usual stats and fun facts:

    • Mass Effect 2 dominated, with 14 GOTY votes (2nd highest total behind God of War's 18 GOTY votes). And with 91 points, it has the 3rd highest score behind God of War (124 points) and Persona 5 (122 points). Surely it will be one of the favorites for the Game of the Decade.
    • This is the first GOTY crown for EA and Bioware. Mass Effect 3 in 2012 could only reach 2nd place, while Andromeda got... 22nd place in 2017.
    • Red Dead Redemption seemed destined to end up in 2nd place, with the most #2 votes ever (10!), and its sequel Red Dead Redemption 2 also placing second in 2018.
    • Fallout: New Vegas gets 3rd place and becomes the best-ranked Fallout game, beating Fallout 4 in 2015 (8th) and obviously Fallout 76 in 2018 (not ranked).
    • Another trio of Western games top the rankings, after 2018, 2012 and 2011. The start of the decade was not kind to Japanese developers.
    • 4th place for Super Mario Galaxy 2, the best ranking for a Mario game this decade, tied with Super Mario Odyssey in 2017.
    • Two God of War games in the same year, and both made the ranking! Congrats to God of War III (5th) and God of War: Ghost of Sparta (18th). It's not the first time two games of the same series make it on the same year: Danganronpa in 2014, The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel in 2016 and Yakuza in 2018 accomplished that feat.
    • Only 3 Nintendo games, all in the top 10 though (Super Mario Galaxy 2, Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, Donkey Kong Country Returns).
    • Also 3 exclusives for the PS3 (3D Dot Game Heroes, God of War III, Heavy Rain).
    • The PSP did well with 2 (God of War: Ghost of Sparta, Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep).
    • PC also got 2 exclusives: Civilization V and StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty. Strategy reigns supreme.
    • Only Halo: Reach was an exclusive for the Xbox 360, but Deadly Premonition and the GOTY Mass Effect 2 only came to the PS3 in later years, sooo technically we can count them as 360 exclusives too, in this case good job!
    • So, who didn't make it? It was a cruel cut-off for Call of Duty: Black Ops and Bayonetta, who both scored 9 points but were beat by the rest based on highest vote.
    • 8 points: Metro 2033, Kirby's Epic Yarn, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker.
    • 7 points: Yakuza 3, Alpha Protocol, Alan Wake, Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit.
    • 6 points: Mafia II, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Conviction, Final Fantasy XIII.
    • 5 points: Etrian Odyssey III: The Drowned City, Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, Cladun: This is an RPG, Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies, Monster Hunter Tri, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, Blur, Super Meat Boy.
    • 4 points: Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey, No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle, Resonance of Fate, Victoria II, Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale, Mega Man 10, Dead Rising 2, Gran Turismo 5, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11, BioShock 2, DJMax Portable 3.
    • 3 points: Rock Band 3, Z.H.P. Unlosing Ranger VS Darkdeath Evilman, Ys: The Oath in Felghana, Lost Planet 2, Hydro Thunder Hurricane, Just Cause 2.
    • 2 points: Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light, Deathsmiles, Metroid: Other M, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II, Fable III, Fragile Dreams: Farewell Ruins of the Moon, VVVVVV, Professor Layton and the Unwound Future, Valkyria Chronicles II.
    • 1 point: Mount & Blade: Warband, Split/Second, Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Darksiders, Monday Night Combat, Back to the Future: The Game, Sin & Punishment: Star Successor, Hexyz Force, Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days, Pro Evolution Soccer 2011, GoldenEye 007, Pac-Man Championship Edition DX, Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare, Medal of Honor, UFC Undisputed 2010.
    • 0 point: Army of Two: The 40th Day, Dark Void, MAG, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat, Dante's Inferno, Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing, Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight, Red Steel 2, Crackdown 2...

I've only played 6 out of these 25 games. Apart from Mass Effect 2, I don't think there's anything else I'll want to play in the future.

Thanks again for participating, and now it's time for the big one, the Game of the 2010s! I'll officially start the thread in the next few days, but for those who followed the conversation, feel free to start thinking about your list.

  • Wow, I was the only one who had Split/Second on their list. If anyone is interested in it, I just recommend the console, not the PC version. SecureROM has made my PC copy unplayable, and there are weird control issues, but I LOVE playing through it on PS3.

  • I was really surprised that Darksiders got only 1 point, I thought the series would be more popular than that in this community!

  • My votes were:

    1. Fallout: New Vegas
    2. Mass Effect 2
    3. Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
    4. Red Dead Redemption
      HM: Dead Rising 2
      HM: Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver
      HM: Skate 3
HM: Call of Duty: Black Ops

Dead Rising 2, the last true Dead Rising game, not counting Off the Record. Such a tonne of fun exploring that sandbox and slowly getting better and better. The craftable weapons were all really creative, and the way that you unlocked more through finding posters in the world was great.

Call of Duty Black Ops... First, I love the Campaign, I think it's really memorable, whereas a lot of the others sort of blend in to each other. I couldn't tell you what happens in Black Ops 2 for the life of me. Vorkuta is one of the best missions in Call of Duty ever. Step 1: Secure the Keys!

And obviously, Black Ops secured Zombies as this incredible new game mode they had first introduced in WaW. Treyarch destroyed the boundary of what a horde mode could actually be. I still have really fond memories of beating the easter eggs on these maps, discovering the underlying story of Zombies and starting to piece everything together.

I honestly still can't believe that this game mode hasn't been copied by more titles.

  • @sazime I have always wanted to get this game, it looks incredible. How is the splitscreen? I played 3-player Blur on PS3 a while back and it was super difficult to see anything, even on the 60-inch we were using.

  • @axel To whoever else gave Metroid: Other M 1 point, you're the real champion here.

  • You're all sleeping on Recettear, just saying.

You're all sleeping on Recettear, just saying.

    True though.

  • @hanabi I didn't vote for it but yeah Reccetear is good times.

@axel To whoever else gave Metroid: Other M 1 point, you're the real champion here.

It was meeeeeee! It was still fun despite the crappy story.

  • Love these recaps so much. A couple of observations that stand out to me:

    • Having Battlefield: Bad Company 2 beat out Black Ops and Bayonetta by virtue of a single vote (in terms of place) is probably the most brutal/heartbreaking of a cut-off I've seen in these threads.

    • Seeing Metro 2033 get so close hurts me. I may not have had the most glowing praise, but its still a good game and I'm not gonna lie, I always seeing as many of my nominees make it as possible (regardless of their final place on the list)

    • I had Final Fantasy XIII written down as a 2009 release, then seeing this had me realize that was the Japanese date. It wouldn't have changed anything, as I would have it below Re:Coded, but just a brief thought: The Final Fantasy I actually hate because of no opportunity to grind in an extremely hand-holding corridor of a game. Not a fan of the story or characters either, and one of only three Final Fantasies I've never been able to finish because of its gameplay.

  • Fable 3 gets shit on because of how much Molyneux hyped it up, but it's still a fun game in its own right. Sure, you can cheese the ending really hard so that you save everybody whilst being a nice person, but even that I don't think is too egregious. Fable 3 has a vibe that is unparalleled, and I think it's surprisingly great at world-building. It's probably the worst Fable game, but it's still a great time.

  • @e_zed_eh_intern From what I remember, it worked fairly well. I haven't played split screen in a while, but I think it was pretty well optimized, and used a top and bottom split rather than side by side.

  • I know we're gearing up and getting hyped for the Games of the Decade thread, but I just to be the first to go ahead and put it out there as the voting for that opens and we get underway, (and as this thread ultimately tappers off), to suggest the move to the Hall of Fame subforum. Doesn't have to be today or tomorrow, just soon so this won't get lost.

Multiplayer was fun for like 10 hours before it got samey

I feel like the repetitiveness made it feel more competitive because you had rely more on fundamental FPS skills than MW2. I agree with you on the campaign, though.

  • Welp, only one game from my list made it in.
Super Meat Boy and Bayonetta not making the list is a crime.

    #4: Bayonetta
    #3: Kirby's Epic Yarn
    #2: Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions
    #1: Nier

    HM:
    Super Meat Boy
    Bioshock 2
