Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout (PS4, PC)

  • @hanabi Same.
Last night I was literally in mid air in a dive for the crown before the win was stolen from me.

Watch until the end. I spazzed out, overshot the jump and thought I actually lost.

Fall Guys is a game of inches...

  • Finally got my first win, and of course through every single round I only qualified by the skin of my teeth and even in the final (Hex-a-gone) I literally won as I was falling to my death.

  • Played it for some time and I have two things to say:

-Team games shouldn't be in a game like this, would be much better if they were replaced with other individual competitions.
-20$ is too much for it, it doesn't deserve more than 10 bucks at max.

I see the ones where you're having to work together as just another skill you have to learn to excel at, however the ones that are just a team counter with very little coordination like Hoopsie Daisy I agree should almost be in an entirely different playlist. They're fun for when you queue with friends, since you'll be put on the same team, but rest of the time it sucks having to pray you're on one of the good teams with minimal influence to the whole overall.

-20$ is too much for it, it doesn't deserve more than 10 bucks at max.

Have to disagree there. At launch, it already has 25 different challenge games with some decent variety in the activities you're doing and some real standouts among them. On top of this, the game comes with completely free Battlepasses every Season with a bunch of new animations, colors / patterns, and costumes, including lots of crossover costumes, that you buy with currency you earn from wins / playing, not real money. That's quite a bit for $20 total, especially when Fortnite would probably charge you that for a single costume, and much like your modern Splatoon-like games as a service games Fall Guys is just getting started. It is already being updated, and they've already given everyone who's played so far a new costume for free.

  • I think most of the team games are fine, it's really just Egg Scramble and Fall Ball I have a problem with. Egg Scramble feels like it goes on for too long, like you already know who's going to get eliminated almost a full minute before it ends and if you're on the losing side it really doesn't feel good to basically be stuck watching a clock tick down just so you can lose. That and it's basically just a worse version of Hoarders, where instead of trying to bounce balls between your zones you're spending the entire game trying to dig out two or three eggs from one team's little hole and spend most of the time getting stuck on the steps because you need momentum to get out while carrying eggs and you can't really build that you when you keep bumping into other players.

Fall Ball on the other hand wouldn't be that bad of a game on its own, but when you factor in that you only ever play it in the semifinals, it has a bad habit of happening damn near every time (at least for me, it sure feels like it anyway) before the finals, and it constantly happens when the teams are uneven in size it leads to a lot of feel-bad moments where you haul ass just to lose out before the finals due to being short a player. They need to lower its occurrence or make it so it only happens if there's an even number of players (assuming nobody disconnects before the game is selected, anyway.) I guess this might be alleviated in the long run if they add more semifinal-ish games but as of right now if a game goes into four rounds before the final it seems like it's literally either just that or tip toe.

And while I'm complaining about games there is one other that I really don't like, Perfect Match. Granted, that kinda has the opposite problem where it's way too easy and nobody ever gets eliminated, so it just feels like a waste of time. I dunno how you'd even fix that with the way the game works at the moment.

  • Yeah I don't mind the team games, it's more the problem with the input/output being relatively unresponsive. I can mount an individual effort in the team games just as I do on my own in the regular mini-games, but when pressing R2 outright doesn't grab the tail or the egg, then WTF can I or anybody else do?

They either need to remove the team games or fix the input.

I had the idea that you could make the Perfect Match platforms smaller, so less people could crowd to the correct answers, and it'd award the people who got to them first, having the safest positions on them, away from the edges.

    @DIPSET said:

For the egg game, I think that's intentional to make it easy for people to drop eggs when getting bumped and such, but you're right about the grabbing games. That's an area that really needs improvement. I liken it to how Rollers in Splatoon 1 used to ghost murder you, something they eventually did manage to fix, so hopefully the Fall Guys devs figure out the net code to fix the problem as well, because it sure does suck losing your tail when the person is nowhere near you on your screen.

  • Fall Ball's become my most unenjoyable minigame. It's started to appear almost every round and somehow every round I get eliminated there. Like our team has no chance. 10-0, 6-0, 5-1, 5-0 etc. What a buzzkill. I mean I know I sucked at football in school, but even still in videogames?

  • @sentinel-beach If no one is in goal. Go in goal.

The first touch header meta (jump to try and get a header on the first drop) is getting quite well known. You have to go for it or defend against it. It's almost impossible to defend from the goal line, you have to defend the tip off directly.

It's easily the worst gamemode because, like FIFA, once you're 0-6 you may as well give up.

  • @sentinel-beach @Hazz3r Yeah, they need to fix where the ball spawns in Fall Ball to make it less campable. Would also probably help if the weird ball types like footballs spawned more commonly. What Fall Ball does have going for it, is almost always, you and every single player on your team are super important to the outcome of the match. The physics currently just seem super confusing for where the ball goes with how everyone is hitting it at once. Definitely isn't on par with Rocket League. I think even if they don't change it at all, over time that mode will get better, when people learn to spread out more and cover areas like an actual team would, instead of blindly chasing where the ball always directly is, greatly limiting the coverage of how they can interact with it, since everyone is moving at the same speeds in the same general directions. Like @Hazz3r said, play goalie if nobody else on your team will. That helps a ton, and until they fix it, play into the camping center meta, because it really is the best way to score points or just general match momentum for your team.

  • Doctor Disrespect plays Fall Guys, almost a million views in less than 24h. Don't know if he'll keep playing but he's the kind of guy that can be a huge thing for a game.

  • @mbun

-The games that you should work together doesn't fit the competition of the individual players. All team based games should be in another category, I don't want to compete in a team; solo games are fine enough.

-While their free giveaways is nice, it's still doesn't justify the price. 25 games can be seen as a lot but al least half of them are very basic games that turns into automatic responses after a while like @DIPSET said in previous pages. Also, comparing this to Fortnite isn't the best example because that's a free game; selling cosmetics is their way to earn money from the game while Fall Guys depends on the main price which is not worth it. I would prefer it to be free with additional cosmetics that you can buy and wouldn't give the money it asks if it didn't came with PS+.

  • @scotty Working with others is just another skill you need to master to win. (Just like real life.) The whole point of comparing it to Fortnite is exactly that these are different models. With Fortnite, it costs about $10 per Season of Battle Pass. Fall Guys gives you this for free, forever. With Fortnite, you have to pay for additional skins, but with Fall Guys they're all included as something you earn in-game. On top of all of this at launch, they already have plans to update Fall Guys over time, so you're actually getting a pretty generous deal for only $20 one time.

Why are you even complaining if you got the game essentially for free anyways? I would say the resounding success we've seen so far with Fall Guys is enough to tell the game was priced appropriately.

  • The Team Games are part of the experience. It keeps it from being too Sweaty. Fall Guys needs randomness and luck to stay light-hearted and fun. Otherwise it's just people playing with perfect strategies which quickly becomes boring.

Game isn't based on real life, so just like diving isn't needed in real life; it can be vice versa.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought people can buy those pass with in-game money too.

Doesn't Fortnite also have skins that you can buy with in-game money even though there are ones that you can only buy with real money.

I'm not complaining; played the game, checked out the price and shared my opinion about it.

I'm sure there are games that selling very well buy you don't agree with their pricing.

  • @scotty said:

Basically, the way it works is you originally have to buy a Battlepass for $10, but after you have your first one, if you actually do enough of it to get enough of the rewards, you can then, if you so choose, spend the V-Bucks you earned from that Battlepass to buy the next Battlepass, if you don't spend it on other stuff like you typically would with a reward you had to work hard to earn like that. It is an option, but I wonder how many people do it. I know MMOs in the past played with similar concepts for their subscription fees. There was a crazy EVE Online story one time about someone transporting a ton of subscription currency who got attacked and lost tons of real life money essentially.

Doesn't Fortnite also have skins that you can buy with in-game money even though there are ones that you can only buy with real money.

This I don't know to be honest. I know you can earn some if you own the Battlepass, and maybe some events might give you some? The rest cost V-Bucks as far as I'm aware, but that could be wrong. I've just heard people complain alot about just how expensive the ones that costs V-Bucks are, even compared to stuff like MOBA Costumes, that are known for being expensive.

I'm sure there are games that selling very well buy you don't agree with their pricing.

Fair. Can't think of anything in the moment, but I guess you hear about alot of sports games releasing basically the same game some years and it still sells, because that's all some people play, and the minor changes or just continuing to play the current one can be important enough to them. I think the difference however is that this usually happens with long running preexisting series that already have built up fandoms. Fall Guys is selling very well as something new out the gate at its pricepoint without a massive marketing budget or preexisting reputation / fandom pushing it to these sales heights.

You can keep the randomness and luck with keep adding solo competitions. Game doesn't need team games.

I really think they just need modes with different playlists. That way people can choose what they want. There's enough players to split the playerbase a little among a couple different ones and keep them all healthy. Would help with the people who will always rage at having to work together with others under any context. I still don't see it really as a problem, but maybe it would turn into one if they kept adding Team Games and you basically couldn't get through a single round of games without one of them ending up a Team Game every single run through. I think there's bigger problems to address first right now though, like those awful grabbing latency issues semiruining every game that involves grabbing.

  • Sneaky update! I kinda want to buy the Valve costumes now that they're on PS4. Also, no back to back team games sounds wonderful.

  • The game definitely hit the spot on PS4!
