The EZA Community Top 20 Best of 2009!

  • Halo 3 ODST never did it for me. The thing that sets it apart from other Halo games ends up being the worst part about it. There's nothing interesting going on in New Mombasa. It's just some boring fights that pale in comparison to the main missions. New Mombasa just seems like filler in an already short game.

  • Plants vs Zombies is such a neat game. I feel that its simplicity and charming personality made it so accessible. It's like one of those games that non-players would easily enjoy a lot, and I think those kind of games are always great to have.

  • Love plants vs zombies and don't forget Brandon brought it to hall of great, as said by bam it's a great game for casual fans so I did play it alot with my sister who never games.

    as a fan of tower defense style games this fills alot of that need and just has a lovely charm and is so easy to play, it's nice that it does have a pretty solid campaign with a pelothra of side content as well

  • Again, another reason why 2009 was an incredible gaming year. I think Peggle might've been 2009 as well? Either way, the fact that I could shortlist a mobile game says a lot. It didn't make my list but there were some really solid mobile games back then: PvZ, Peggle, Fieldrunners, Tap Tap.

  • Plants vs. Zombies is one of the few games that I link (accurately or not) to the explosion of the Mobile space, and kudos for it's Hall of Greats nomination, but I never really can get into tower defense of any kind. Though I do appreciate PvZ as a brand being big enough to cross over to being a successful TPS in Garden Warfare, but as for this original game? To and for me, it's whatever.

  • Kinda forgot about it being mobile only ever played it on pc, though I did try 2 on mobile but they seemed to add alot of mobile bs to that version.
    Looks like it took about a year for the port too phones.

  • Flower is one of those games I've always heard in passing, seen a screenshot or very brief clip a time or two, but know nothing about it beyond it preceded Journey for Thatgamecompany, and it's pretty short. Going of some cursory reading, it appears there isn't much too it beyond the message it tells, which I can respect. Though I do wish there was a bit more to it to entice me to play it.

  • I was bummed out when I bought Flower a few weeks ago... the game just keep crashing my PS4! Right now I just don't have the urge to troubleshoot it.

  • I remember my friend really enjoyed this game and mentioned it a few times. Never really saw the appeal myself.

  • I loved this new era of download only games. I bought in immediately and some of my favourite games from PS3 are download only or “PSN Games” as we used to say.

    I’ve beaten Flower maybe 6-7 times. Something about the game is both addicting, yet calming, and extremely satisfying to rapidly bloom a bunch of flowers in succession where the individual instrument notes start to create real music all the while your peloton of pedals grow with diverse colours and respond with actual physics.

    I think what made it so repeatable is that you aren’t going to do the game perfectly, so your experience is always unique with some degree of chaos. It’s almost like cleaning a dirty plate; do you start to scrub in the middle, wet the plate first, wet the sponge first? You’ll never do the same approach twice even if you mean to.

    On a technical front, this was one of the big graphical showpieces of 2009. PS3 only started to spread its exclusive wings around 08-09 and seeing all those blades of grass reminded you like “ok this is how devs will use that CPU”.

    YET, didn’t make my list! 2009 is STACKED

    Same sort of thing happened to me in 2013 in my university dorm. A friend down the hall was gifted an Xbox One from a distant uncle who clearly had no idea that my friend wasn’t even remotely into video games. I mean, he appreciates the art, but he’s not a gamer.

    So he has AC4 Black Flag when it’s brand new and he’s kinda confused about things. Just isn’t really digging the Xbox. Comes into my room one day and I’m on PS3 and he sees the little thumbnail preview that PS3 used to do in the XMB when you hover over a game. He asks me about this because it looks so new to him. I show him the first level and he asks if he can play it.

    I get wrapped up in social involvements around the other dorms and come back 4 hours later and he’s crouched on top of the furniture about 5 feet from the TV on the last level. He was completely into it and beat it in one go.

    People said stuff like “what’s the point of playing a game as a flower, that’s so dumb” but look how it got complete non-gamers at least looking at gaming in a new light. I think he ended up playing Portal and something else that year too.

  • Hey neat, Flower made it! What a zen experience to play. And just so pretty. I kept it installed on my PlayStations and every now and then returned to it just for some beauty and sense of fresh air. I should download it on PS5 now as well.

    I was at the height of my stoner-ness when Flower came out and shit was almost otherworldly.

  • Flower made me appreciate nature a lot more than I did before I played it. Such a calm and blissful little game.

    Journey came out when I was a pseudo pot-head for 9 months and my god was that game magical.

    Closest thing I think I've had to a religious experience in game form.
