So the big patch went live yesterday. Doomfist, Lootbox overhaul, highlights system and other hero changes.
I played a few rounds of just 6v6 elimination, all Doomfist and then mystery heroes so I could check him out and see how lootboxes were.
Firstly, Doomfist seems like a lot of fun. Playing in that mode is just pure mayhem so I can't take much out of it in terms of where he'd fit in a proper team but I'll check that out in QP someday. Definitely a fun character to add to the roster.
And I picked up 4 lootboxes from my time playing arcade and leveling up and there is a noticeable difference. I didn't get any duplicates (forget if they've just been outright removed for currency), got 1 currency and everything else was new. So that genuinely feels quite nice right now. We'll see after 20, 40 etc but right now it's a nice improvement.
Didn't really mess around with the highlights but it does seem easier to capture things.

@tokeeffe9 I don't think duplicates have been outright removed but they are supposed to be far less common. I got two loot boxes when playing last night and I didn't get a single duplicate.
Yeah, I'm really happy they made the loot box change, although I haven't seen it in action just yet. For most characters, I have only half of their stuff unlocked but I'd go through streaks where several loot boxes in a row would be nothing but duplicates. Duplicates still exist but drop at a lower rate and when they do drop, at least provide more currency than before.
Also, it's flying under the radar but Reaper is getting significantly better with each patch. Not too long ago, wraith form started reloading his clip, the last patch saw him get health back on damage done, now his shadow step is much less audible to the opposing team. He's still situational (and usually outclassed by Soldier) but kinda interesting to see Blizz constantly giving him buffs.
@SabotageTheTruth Ya I'm happy to see Reaper getting a few buffs. He was out of the game for sometime and he's now a lot more reliable and generally a tank destroyer.
New Developer update, the expected Summer games are coming back on August 8th with new and old skins
One thing I kept forgetting to comment about is how much of a difference the change to the loot boxes is - I've opened at least 5 boxes and not received a single duplicate. I actually look forward to opening them again? There was a period for months where I just hated even the action of opening them, as seeing 4 duplicates was a bummer. Feels good!
@SabotageTheTruth Ya, massive difference with the lootboxes now. It's so much better.
And with that, the summer games are live with some pretty good skins
You can also buy older skins for the standard price which is pretty nice. Blizzard have been on a good run now of doing some decent stuff.
This update has been extremely unstable so far, I can say that much. Waiting in a queue with 50,000 people ahead of me, even though I was just playing 5 minutes ago. Kinda lame.
@SabotageTheTruth What are you playing on?
When I booted it up it said I couldn't log in but after clicking to log in after I didn't have any other issues (PC here)
Got the Reaper skin there too so I'm already very happy :)
@tokeeffe9 PS4, which apparently has been plagued with issues since the update went live. I got a few matches of Lucioball in before I was booted though, the changes for this year seem to help the flow of it.
Still can't play on PS4, feels real bad at this point. It's a little confusing since they've run this event before and didn't have this many issues. I guess the servers can't handle a few more skins and a new Lucioball arena.
@SabotageTheTruth What's the PS4 version like now?
I played Lucioball just to get the lootbox and oh boy do I despise that mode. It's easily my least favourite extra mode they've done. It just feels so slow and half the time the ball goes from one goalkeeper to the other.
In other news, we're getting Deathmatch & Team Deathmatch modes . Should be interesting.
@tokeeffe9 They fixed it a few hours after, so it was still down for most of the day.
Strange, I actually am the exact opposite - I like Lucioball a lot more than most of the extra stuff they add in. Still on the fence about deathmatch. I remember the developers saying modes like capture the flag and deathmatch will never work with Overwatch and when capture the flag was added, it was just a terrible mode to play. Probably won't dive into deathmatch too much, but hey, maybe it'll be surprisingly fun.
I think Deathmatch is fine because it's just in arcade, it's not a main mode and it's not competitive. The only possible problem I see is if people end up preferring it to regular mode. I doubt that though.
I dislike Lucio ball, like a lot. It wasn't much fun for me the first time and I'm kinda disappointed they didn't change much about it. I'd love to have seen them tweak other characters to work with it.
I'm just killing time in total mayhem instead ☺ Doomfist is pretty great in that mode.
Got the McCree skin so far.
If Deathmatch turns out to be alright, I think it could honestly take some of the more 'negative' players away from quick play. At least that's what I hoping.
I've never really given total mayhem a look. I'm a bit surprised it isn't completely broken with Zarya and Dva.
Might check it out for a laugh sometime.
We got some more changes coming in with the Deathmatch. Some pretty big buffs to the looks of it
- Concussion Mine
- Junkrat can now hold two mines
- Tire’s movement speed has been increased by 30%
- There is no longer a time limit when wall climbing
So Junkrat can do a triple jump now, a lot more chaos in narrow areas and his Ult is a bit stronger.
- Fusion Driver
- Projectile speed increased by 20%
- Protective Barrier
- Barrier size increase by 20%
- Barrier shape has been changed to allow for more coverage from enemies that are below the barrier
Orisa was already in a decent enough place I thought. The last buff made her a lot more useable and this sounds like a really big buff for her.
- Take a Breather
- Can now be used while moving
- Damage taken while healing has been reduced by 50%
Still don't like the sound of this buff but it is one. It just doesn't fix the issues with Roadhog.
- Grappling Hook
- Cooldown has been reduced from 12 seconds to 8
- Venom Mine
- Affected targets are now visible through walls (to you as Widowmaker only)
I imagine a lot of Widow players are weeping with joy. That grapple buff has been mentioned by just about everyone for a long time. Never made sense to me why it was on such a long cooldown. Seeing the affected target through walls is a pretty cool buff too.
@tokeeffe9 Oh man, Zarya is a beast in total mayhem which might be why I play her all the time (I play her a lot in most modes)
It's just a fun mode to play if you want arcade wins and don't love the other choices.

Loving those Orisa changes! Can't wait to see them when/if they go live!
Reporting on console will be available when patch 1.14 goes live (the patch that has DM and TDM and is currently on the PTR for testing).
Thanks for being so patient with us.
Also, it's important to note the reporting system and punishments are very much an ongoing development for us. Improvements will continue over time. We are working on increased punishments for high frequency offenders, email notifications when your reports result in disciplinary action (we're experimenting with this right now and we'll expand this as we refine it) and eventually notifications in the game client when your report results in disciplinary action.
Hopefully this is the beginning of better reporting all round.
@Inustar I played a few rounds the other day and ya, Zarya is insane in that mode :)
Oooooh, can't wait to see all the people being reported on console for terrible reasons...
But I am happy to see reporting arriving on consoles, it's about time, even though I know it's gonna have considerable growing pains.
I'm super excited for Team Deathmatch, not so sure about regular Deathmatch, but that's mostly due to me being terrible and needing teammates 😊
