    • RE: [Sigrid: Det inre mörkret] A blog about my own game, a psychedelic fairytale

      anxiety.
So anyways, this 'blog' is off to a rocky start as things have been going pretty bad indeed. Tomorrow I'll upload patch 1.2.1, and I will for the rest of the week crawl up in my lonely corner and feel ashamed for ever having to to that. I patched chapter 2 once a day after release, merely optimizing the frame rate in playfield and the working woods a little bit. (culling more objects, increasing the threshold for popping, a little mesh baking) There and done, and I was so proud slash happy that that was the 'only' thing that needed to be done in order for the game to MOSTLY run great, ofc not glitch free but at least nothing gamebreakinig.

Then what. 3 days ago. There was a game breaking bug right before the credits. What is so ridiculously shameful about this is that I was so damn tired of the last day of debugging that upon reaching the final scene, I was like 'yeah, neat'. Because the credits worked all those days prior to that last stretch of debugging. And I believe that that frame rate patch caused the credits glitch, but of course I didn't realize because I ran a debug test only in these areas where the frame rate needed to be tested.

The thing with glitches and bug - there is, especially for an indie developer, NO FREAKING WAY, your game will be devoid of glitches. Making a game and debugging it is like that Greek beast. For everyone you remove, there's five more. If you remove two, sometimes there'll be three more and sometimes there'll be 50 more. It never ends. A great game dev is not someone who makes the game glitch-free, it's someone who knows when to stop, for if you have 23 glitches, risks are that you'll MAYBE get 21 or 20, but if you try that you run the risk of end up with 40 glitches instead.

      Some things that happened:
I believe the end credits thing was that I altered the function that was supposed to destroy the hud in the credits in order to optimize the play fields. (an area in the game) . I tested the play fields, it ran good, and I didn't realize that altering that function would mess with the credits. But it's just hud, right, but then when I tried to optimize the working woods by making the overworked theme stop, I accidentally named it and tagged it the exact same thing as the post-credits song. So now, that song would load the same time as the song in the ending cutscene, but only if you would've saved in Anastasia prior to that. (which ofc I want people to do)

And then now, like 2 days ago, I discovered this other major glitch where there was a strand of code left in a scene so where you would press X, it would load the library, but not Sigrid, forcing you to restart, and it was left there simply because the dialoge tree would go off to that branch because I, in another scene, set up the value for the library the very same as the scene after that scene, but only after you would finish the 1st dungeon. These things happens all the damn time and it makes me throw a tantrum and cry and scream all the damn time because this is just that hard.

And I, well. I really have to fight against the narrative that 'Well, stop complaining because we know it's hard, just work harder." And I really think that any game developer should be perfectly entitled to 'complain' as much as they want. It really is that hard, and frustrating, and depressing. We, as developers, can not tell you this enough. Whenever there's a breaking glitch in an indie game, I feel empathy. It's hard for a consumer, perhaps, to come to terms with the feeling of having wasted 10 bucks, and I understand that. But please note that glitches really is like fighting that Greek monster.
And I'm beyond proud for each and everyone who pulled this of as good as they could. Whenever I see the next Golf Story or Owlboy. I get so happy. Yes reviewers are bound to double down on those games for their glitches. But still. These people are so awesome for pulling this off. And I hope I can be like you someday.

    • RE: The Disaster that is the Battlefront 2 Launch

I did a visit once to the DICE headquarters for an interview with the 2d artist of Mirror's edge. I remember the corner with the soda machine very fondly. Following this news stories, I keep having this weird visions about what's going around that soda machine. Are people yelling at each other? What if someone gets sad? Did they know? I hope there is Love & Respect, even around the DICE soda machine.

(EDIT: If it's still there. This was 9 years ago, after all.)

Hnstly though, I still have problems imagining the reasoning behind this. It CAN'T be because they didn't think they could break even? I mean , Star Wars sells like horror merch in a Huber household these days. And I really don't see this game having a fatter budget (+ server costs) than, say, vanilla destiny.
I'm almost all conspiracy now, that there is some mighty scary shit going on between EA, South Korean mattress factories, Putin, and the Star Wars franchise

    • RE: Ranking the Super Mario games

From a game design standpoint, it... in and of itself it's kinda sad they've yet to be surpassed (?!) but nothing tops Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario 64. These games are so well designed it's absolutely ridiculous. Watch the speedruns and watch exactly how careful each and every obstacle has been placed, and how imaginative it is with some of it's ideas, like the tick tock clock, or tiny-huge island, or the sun, or the giant's land.

Personally, though, I'd rank Super Mario 64 DS higher. I think it's understated how awesome some of the extra added stars and levels are.
I'd probably put Galaxy 1 over 2, because I find 2 kind of quantitative, and the Yoshi mechanics never hit home for me, really.
World has such a ridiculous idea with Star World (the secret world) and special world (the secret world WITHIN the secret world??)

And 3D world. Oh my lord, 3D world. How very very much I love you.

      1. Super Mario World
      2. Super Mario Galaxy
      3. Super Mario 3D World
      4. Super Mario Sunshine
      5. Super Mario Galaxy 2
      6. Super Mario Bros. 2

top 6'll do for now :P

    • RE: Super Mario Odyssey (Switch)

HOLY SHIT what an interesting ending!

I'm so surprised that they decided to add a bit of nuance to the characters, and surprised that they portrayed Mario as such a douchebag.
I mean, Mario's stories has always been creepy - big-ass mean crocodile bloke is assaulting a young girl and drags her to his castle doing god-knows-what without consent.
But the entire marriage premise makes Odyssey even more creepy. It's not about love at all, it's about entitlement and oppression. You learn to despise Bowser..
.. BUT. At the end, when they both tries to force themselves onto Peach, you realize that Mario isn't that much better! That he, too, feels entitled to Peach and treats her inferiorly, and that maybe he too, when 'rescuing her' is also subjugating her to god-knows-what without consent.

And I was so happy when Peach finally decided to tell them to snuff it and treat her with respect. And it was such a weirdly touching scene when Mario and Bowser was actually comforting one another.

Here, I actually thought that Bowser would learn his lesson, and that they would forgive him. And that he would follow you in the odyssey! And imagine if, post game, you could be able to possess bowser anytime, in any level! How COOL would that be?! But nope, we end with Mario just kicking him off, and acting like he's the better man.. which he isn't.

And for the rest of post game, I was always so happy whenever i saw Peach, free of the boys' hassles, on her own, and perfectly content :') )

There's much more to say.. too much. I'm glad now, this game is so EMOTIONAL. Like, instead of relying on well-written plot, or acting, or tear-jerking orchestras, it manages to convey so much emotion just by being pure, pure fun. So when the game finally grants you a moment of melancholia and peace, you tear up just because you've grown so attached to this game because of how much fun you've had with it, and not through plot or dialogue.

This entire thing is expert-tier game design. Bravo, Nintendo <333

    • RE: What Gaming "Flaws" Are You OK With?

, I'm perfectly fine with things like pop-ins, draw distance texture lowressing, or occlusion culling (objects that disappear for half a second when the camera is in certain angles.) Or clipping for that matter, which I know can annoy many people :)
Because since I make games myself, I know how integral these things are to the performance. when I see someone who wants 60fps, AND no clipping and no pop-ins, I get the feeling that they want to eat the cookie and keep it.)

..Speaking of texture lowressing, (rendering an object with a lower resolution texture when far away, and not switching to the original HD texture until you're close enough) I had this insanely funny moment in Grand Theft Auto V, where a mountain failed to load the original texture in time, so for like 3 seconds, the entire mountain looked like something from, like, Banjo-Kazooie. It was a priceless moment that I will treasure for a long time !!!
