I agree, it can be very obnoxious. At least limiting the dimensions, or a show/hide toggle would help.

RE: My gaming youth or how I didn't have a console and the franchises I missed
I have been strictly PC-only my entire life simply because there was no way my family would get a machine dedicated to video games. The exception being an occasional older game that I emulated (like Pokemon Red and Gold, Crash Bandicoot, Earthbound, Super Metroid, Silent Hill, MGS, God Hand). But I'm not complaining as there was always a lot to play on PC and nothing will replace the memories of years and years of Quake and Counter Strike multiplayer. Growing up with PCs also makes a person a bit more tech-savvy, so that's something to be thankful for.
I did, however, miss all of post-N64 era Nintendo games, so that's kind of a bummer. I dabbled in Majora's Mask and Super Mario 64, but never really committed. I really want to really get back in those two specifically some time later on.
But now I'm in my own apartment, I have a job, and I just got a PS3 a week ago after having missed out on two generations of console exclusives. Between Vanquish, Bayonetta, Catherine and (emulated) Yakuza 1, I feel like I have rediscovered video games. And if I ever get a current gen console, it will be yeeears from now. Just thinking about how I can finally finish the MGS series, experience Red Dead Redemption, and catch up on all those action games makes me giddy. Plus, those games cost next to nothing nowadays.
Patience pays off.
RE: Late to the Party: Resident Evil 4 (HD)
I played RE4 for the first time last year and it was completely different from what I had expected. Much campier and action-oriented. It was also my first RE game, so I had no point of reference. I finished it and liked it, I see its merits clear as day, but I didn't love it. Just because I went in expecting a scary game with a survival element. I had fun with it, but I didn't get those things.
RE: Where should I start with the Persona series?
It might be worth it to give Persona 2 a shot. Innocent Sin (the first part of the P2 duology) is on PSP and non-censored fan translation is up for grabs for PS1.
P2 is in my opinion superior to P3 and 4 in terms of characters, story and atmosphere. People will disagree with me, but characters in 3 and 4 are much more of anime caricatures that really only exist to justify main character's existence. That's how I feel, anyway.
What P2 has going against it is somewhat dated looks and clunky UI. The fight system is deeper than in the later entries but it is, again, hindered by the poorly designed UI. But there are ways around it (speed-up function in emulators really helps this game).
Chances are that you will not be able to go back to P2 after so many things have been streamlined in P3/4, so I'd recommend giving that one a try first. It's kind of like playing Witcher 1 after Witcher 3.
P2 also has undisputably best waifu.
