Former mechanical engineer, in the middle of a career change to software engineering
Magic: the Gathering has been a lifelong companion, been playing since Tempest in all manner of formats. Former hardcore otaku, casual anime fan nowadays. Love fiddling with my hands and have dabbled in a variety of dexterity toys.
I like to joke that being introduced to Mario is why I wear glasses. Fairly certain I had a knockoff Famicom with several 100-in-1 carts. Then I got a GameBoy and have had every version of that family since. Console-wise, I went Sega Genesis (with an x32), N64, Dreamcast, GameCube, WiiU. Mostly a Nintendo/Blizzard fanboy, my shelves are crammed with every Blizzard Collector's Edition since vanilla WoW.
Firmly believe that I don't have many firm beliefs, just trying to be the best 'Me' I can be.

RE: The Houdini of His Gen: How Will Bosman Escape This Time?
The contract only stated that he has to "stream" a complete playthrough from a new save file. It never stated that he has to play it.

RE: Rate the Song Thread
@Hoken Always a sucker for slow violins. The background strings build to a haunting crescendo. Wasn't feeling the bass lines too much but maybe just not in the right mood or state of mind. 4/5 stars, would listen again.

SGDQ 2016 HYPE
Welcome to the SGDQ 2016 General thread! Sounded like a good amount of chat are looking forward to this event so I thought it'd be good to have a mega-thread for reactions, twitch-clipouts, and general storytiming.
If you don't know what GDQ (Games Done Quick) is about, it's a bi-annual speedrun event that is live for 24-hours a day for 7 days. They collect donations throughout the event to benefit various charitable causes. They run special Donation Incentives that act like polls that are voted on with donations to influence anything from character and file save names to whole games being added to the schedule! All speedruns are played live (except TASbot) and generally have live commentary from other knowledgeable runners. As you can imagine from a 1-week event, they run a LOT of games, so if you're not interested in the current game, check back later or see the entire schedule here.
SGDQ 2016 FULL SCHEDULE
All times on the schedule are converted to your timezone. The main stream can be found here.
SGDQ 2016 MAIN STREAMI always have a blast during these events, even as just a viewer marveling at the skill on display and sharing my favorite moments with friends, so check it out and let's hear what you're excited for!

RE: Bosman v The World: Post Your Tetris Scores!
So after a little more research and comparing my gameplay to the latest BvW, here are the major differences I've found that comprise to make TetrisDX easier.
-
Lock-delay - DX has a wait time after a piece touches ground before it will fully lock in place allowing for the piece to be slid a pretty far distance
-
Auto-scrolling - DX players can just hold left or right on the D-pad and pieces will zip in that direction, no mashing required.
-
Softer RNG - this was Kyle's main stipulation when I asked and I'll take his word on this.
-
EDIT: Points for dropping pieces faster. Almost forgot this little beauty, DX grants essentially free points just for holding down on the D-pad to drop tetrominoes faster. It's not much per piece, about 20 for a full drop, but it adds up.
All this said, I'm still pretty proud of this score.

RE: For those with kids, how have/will you introduce games to your kids?
@thenerdtheword This is pretty much the exact plan I've thought up, if/when the time comes. There was a pretty on-the-nose comic that really hit me on this topic. Making your kid play the games you grew up with is analogous to what those "overbearing" parents do when they make their kids participate in activities the kid doesn't want to do. In the parent's mind, their kid should love it because the parent loved it when they were a kid.
I discovered my love of gaming pretty much on my own, my dad just provided me with whatever was on hand at the time. Obviously he didn't have games growing up, but he was a fairly versed gamer at the time and still let me play what I wanted to play for the most part. I want my kid to share my passion for gaming, but they won't necessarily have to discover it via the same path I did. Their nostalgia will be for a completely different set of (probably curated) games current for them. -
RE: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (NS/WiiU)
@Churchy My first horse is brown and white named マーベル (maaberu). This is a transliteration of "Marvel", but can also be taken as "marble" because she kinda looks like marbled ice cream. Also, 馬 (ma3) is the word for horse in Mandarin. My second horse had much less thought put into his name; オリオ (orio) or Oreo, cause he's black and white.

RE: Brandon Plays Pokémon - Official Discussion Thread
@WiedThin I'm totally down for that. Hope Brandon has the time to commit when Sun/Moon roll around.

RE: EA E3 2016 Conference Discussion Thread
This year's E3 doesn't look to have many stakes for me with no Nintendo event, but super excited (and just a little more wary) for the Zelda news. Also looking forward to any and all surprises this year will bring. Let's get to it!

RE: E3 2016 Snack Thread
@Hesperus Classy. I've yet to try any of those fun Kit-Kat flavors.
@Hoken I love me some foreign (American here) snacks, those look great!

RE: Don's Discount Gaming - Official Discussion Thread
Any platform that gives Don storytime-ability is a plus in my book.

RE: Brandon Plays Pokémon - Official Discussion Thread
He accidentally discovered the box limitations when he tried to catch another trainer's pokemon. Kyle cleared up his misconception about why the catch failed and the box issues.

RE: PC Gaming Show E3 2016 Discussion Thread
This has been super entertaining so far, and that's not just my love of Day[9]. Great pacing, sweet games, even the tech pieces have been awesome.

RE: PC Gaming Show E3 2016 Discussion Thread
Petered out towards the end but still a real solid showing overall. I liked bringing out Warren Spector to close things out with a good old-fashioned keynote speech, gave me the warm fuzzies about being PC Masterrace. :nerd:

RE: Online D&D Session
@UltimateBrent https://roll20.net/ has a lot of nice tools to run sessions online. I think this is what Ben was using for the visual display in TTE before he dropped that.
-
RE: A few suggestions
@Knwtmsyn Cause the link's in the box that shows the status of the Twitch channel right under the giant word "Stream".

RE: Hey Allies, what competitive games do you follow?
I'm a casual esports fan in general, doesn't take too much to get me to watch any random tournament going on. I love FGC weekend tournaments cause it usually means there'll be something to watch. I do follow Smash, both melee and 4, more regularly and more recently have been scoping out the fledgling Overwatch stuff. Of the other major scenes, I keep tabs on CS:GO and Hearthstone, not so much DOTA2 or LoL, but I'll occasionally hop over to a friend's for a viewing party during a major.
Out side of video games, I follow the M:tG pro scene very closely and will usually hit up any GP or SCGOT that comes my way.

RE: EZA: Username list! Explain your username!
Appropriated a name from Megatokyo and replaced the first letter with my first initial. Have a bunch of iterations that I cycle through but they all stem off the same root.
