    • RE: What Are The Best Dubs?

@Minamik As I said, I'm fine with most dubs. But I do really respect how seriously everyone in Japan looks upon the voice acting industry. It's a very cool aspect of Japanese culture in my opinion.

I see what Inflorescence is getting at though. You can easily hear the passion coming from Japanese voice actors but there's a lot of nuance lost when you don't understand a language. For many people, it's easy to understand why they would always prefer dubs. Some would argue that bad translations or poor acting lose that nuance as well. But I don't think the majority of dubs since perhaps the early 2000s are lacking in these aspects enough to hinder the experience for the average person.

I gave signing up a shot as well. I wasn't a member of neogaf though so I'm not holding my breath. Just crossing my fingers.

I'm not sure many people will have heard of Jerma. He doesn't upload very often but his videos are always hilarious.

    • RE: A hub for the EZA Game Makers!!

@JamboHyland95 Maybe we should start a website called "ArtistFriendsdotcom" so we can gather all the artists in the world in one convenient location under the guise of finding them work. In reality, the real purpose of the site will be for us to make friends with all of them for our video game endeavors!

    • RE: Super Mario Odyssey (Switch)

I really want a Switch. Nintendo has managed to win me over after I was so skeptical around the launch of the system. There are still some nagging issues I have with the Switch like the under-cooked online infrastructure and the overpriced peripherals. But must have games are piling up and that's the most important thing. I really hope Nintendo takes the success of Mario + Rabbids to heart because that's exactly what they should be doing when it comes to third party support. Getting ports of Skyrim and Doom is nice and all... but fostering partnerships with third party companies to create exclusive games that take full advantage of Nintendo's platform and IPs is the way to go. You combine that with games like Breath of the Wild and Odyssey and the promise of Pokemon, Metroid, etc... the Switch will be impossible to avoid.

    • RE: A hub for the EZA Game Makers!!

I've been wanting to make a game for a long time. I'm willing to smash my head against the wall to learn all the coding, scripting, etc. I can make the music. I know how to handle the voice acting if it's necessary. I've come up with a few interesting concepts and could probably write a serviceable plot.

My two biggest roadblocks are art and animations. I can't draw particularly well. I just don't have an eye for the big picture when it comes to drawing art. Animations, I feel like I could learn on a long enough timeline... but they are so... so much work. Especially if you want them done well.

It's hard to know where to go to get the talent necessary to make a great looking game. Where would one commission art specifically for video games? Even then, it would feel so wrong to just "commission" such an integral part of your game. A place where the passion for the project should shine through the most...

Maybe I just need to make friends with a talented artist that also wants to make a game. Anyone want to be my friend?

I lurked around neogaf daily for gaming news and deals. I probably would have tried to join the forums myself but I don't have any email accounts beyond gmail. So I suppose I'll continue to lurk around resetera for gaming news before the gaming press gets their gaming news from resetera.

    • RE: Weeb Games (Japanese Games Appreciation Thread)

@Torigasa-Reta I hope you actually get to create your own character in the new Sword Art Online game.

I've played a few of the previous SAO games and I don't understand the developer's logic behind forcing you to play as Kirito while allowing you to customize your avatar. It seems like this weird and unsatisfying middle ground to me. Either create a story around a new player made character or focus completely on Kirito. I mean, the world of SAO certainly allows for Kirito to look different but when all the cutscenes use his default look it just feels so out of place to me.

I could be in the minority though. Maybe it doesn't bother most people at all. I do feel like I'm in the majority when I say that a new player created character would be more exciting though. That's the dream of SAO isn't it? Be whoever you want to be? It seems like a huge missed opportunity to not make at least one big SAO game with a story revolving around a new protagonist of the players making.

Maybe the market for the game would rather put themselves into Kirito's shoes and build up relationships with characters that they already know and love from the show. Or maybe I'm just letting my bemusement at the lack of an actual SAO MMO spill over as criticism towards the other SAO games.

    • RE: What Are The Best Dubs?

      In terms of anime...

      • Death Note
      • Fullmetal Alchemist / Brotherhood
      • Cowboy Bebop
      • Samurai Champloo

I would hold these up as prime examples of excellent dubs. I would prefer to watch these dubbed, in fact.

Personally, it takes a lot for me to consider a dub "bad". Dubs like Dragon Ball Z, Naruto, Sword Art Online, Attack on Titan, etc. all sound perfectly fine to me. I could watch these with the original Japanese cast or the dubbed cast. Most anime falls into this category for me.

A few random dubs that I've also enjoyed include Deadman Wonderland, Welcome to the NHK, and Rurouni Kenshin. Kenshin is older and definitely rough by today's standards but it has an undeniable charm to it.

Also, every Studio Ghibli film I've watched (which is most of them) has an excellent dub.

I should also mention that I'm probably a little biased considering I do VO work myself. Hard not to defend dubs when it's something you do yourself! I still enjoy watching anime in Japanese though. I'm currently going through Konosuba and it's hilarious.
