    • RE: Games you consider 10/10.

@Haru17 said in Games you consider 10/10.:

Nonetheless, I'm glad someone else appreciated Echoes. That game gets anti-hype like no one's buisness (literally "like no one's buisness," as most people condemn it without ever even owning the disc).

      • I actually prefer Echoes to the original Prime, it's an amazing game. I loved Aether and the way its environments were more weird & alien than Tallon IV while the dark world and general difficulty bump were also awesome (I think that put a lot of people off).
Unfortunately the wii-mote controls ruined Metroid Prime 3 for me, I hate them so much that I illiterately can't get through that game. Wish they still had the options to play it with the Gamecube pad.

    • The lack of SIFTD and EZA cross-over seem strange to anybody?

So I'm a patron of EZA while also subscribing to SIFTD which is the website set-up and run by Shane Satterfield from the old GT crowd. Not sure how many of you would be likewise but I'd imagine a fair amount of cross-over since both EZA and SIFTD have their roots in Gametrailers staff.

Anyway, Shane mentioned on the latest episode of his show GameFace that he doesn't get invited onto other shows and podcasts much (or at all) which seems strange to me. I mean, he came back to Gametrailers as a guest on GT Live and the Bonus Round and I'm pretty sure Brandon showed up on an early episode of GameFace. I've got the impression not everybody who worked with him is a big fan of Shane which is fair enough, and I can understand that, especially since he was 'The Boss' for a long time and it isn't always easy to be that likeable when you need to get people to do their jobs and hit deadlines (btw, I personally do like Shane a lot and really enjoy GameFace and SIFTD).
However, at the least Brandon and he seem to get along well and he must have worked alongside Blood, Damiani and Keighley for years - as a point of comparison there is obviously a fair amount of crossover happening on Live with Youtube Gaming what with Kyle being a big part of it and both Brandon and Elyse showing up as guests but the same doesn't seem to apply with SIFTD.

Just to be clear I'm not making any big point or call anybody a jerk, I'm simply wondering if anybody else if a bit of confused by the lack of Shane-crossover among the the rest of the old GT crowd when it seems like such a natural fit.matter also, whatever the heck happened to Ryan Stevens...?

    • RE: Metroidvanias that aren't Metroid or Castlevania, which are your favourites?

Guacamelee is probably my favourite 'other' Metroidvania.
Shantae & The Pirate's Curse comes a close second.
Shadow Complex is also great of course.
      And I'm hopeful for Bloodstained.

Somehow I just couldn't get along with Ori & The Blond Forest. :-\

    • RE: What is your GOTY so far?

Regarding the discussion about whether Witcher 3: Blood and WIne qualifies, I don't think it should be dumped in the usual 'DLC' category. This was a full-on traditional expansion pack with a 15+ hour quest in a totally new (and huge) location.

I would say it's no different from a sequel to a game built in the same engine with the same mechanics, like Assassin's Creed Brotherhood or something like that.

Not that it matters of course. All that does matter is that so many people love it.

    • RE: Is it okay to form an opinion about a game without finishing it?

Depends on what opinion you are putting across.

What Brandon was saying was fine - he hasn't got into Final Fantasy VII and it didn't appeal to him. No problem.

However, I have run into people (including some of my close friends) who like to really crap on games and claim they are through-and-through rubbish yet they've never played or even seen much of. That's not okay, not at all.

    • RE: A Witcher 3 review that I agree with

I love Witcher 3's combat and almost everything else about the game. It's snuck into my personal 'Top 10' games ever and certainly has the best story/characters in any game I've played.

People who don't like the game seem to be really, really insecure about this fact and unable to accept that their opinion (which is fine and I respect anybody to dislike it) is not some kind of objective God-given Truth. Especially SoulsBourne fans for some reason (even though they are very different games).

I mean, there are plenty of games that I don't like which are popular and yet for some reason I don't feel the need to go bitching about them all over the internet.

    • RE: AM2R - Amazing Metroid 2 remake released yesterday.

That's beautiful. I need to do some of my own art. Samus is tricky to draw but the Metroids themselves are simple and beautiful. That said, I'm seriously starting to fear them in this game - haven't played a 2D game this atmospheric since... well, Metroid Fusion!

I'm now at the final stage in the nest - fought my first Omega Metroid which was awesome. They and the Zeta Metroid are a lot more fun and interesting to fight than Gammas and Alphas which usually involves just spamming missiles at them.

      I'm coming for you Queenie!

Sorry you couldn't get along with the motion controls. It helped immerse me in the games once I got used to them (Corruption was also the first Metroid I played, renting it back when I was in middle school). But, on the other point, I agree. Retro only got better at crafting unique environments with time.

Sanctuary Fortress is just such a dope area. The skybox (pictured above) is one of the coolest ever made IMO. This whole sprawling metropolis, the likes of which you've never seen in another Metroid game, dead. This entire futuristic society laid dormant when Aether plunged into an energy crisis and guerrilla war. Stakes.

Not to mention the awesome rivalry of Samus tracking her dark reflection across Aether—her bounty hunting being given the limelight. You don't have to hear her say "No bounties or rewards, this one's personal," because you feel it.

This is why, out of all of the games I love, I would pick Echoes to get a full remake and reimagining. It's just such a weird world that I want to see explored. I want to see the Luminoth's cyber tech in Sanctuary Fortress and their more religious-feeling technology from the Temple. I want to learn about the weird digital-looking plant life in Agon Wastes. And I want to see more hydraulics puzzles in Torvus Bog because, to this day, that is one of the only swamps I have ever enjoyed in a video game.

That's not to say the original game was terribly flawed, though. Far from it. In fact, you can actually find the husk of a worm the same species as Amorbis (the final boss of Agon Wastes) in the first area of the Wastes! It's a scan and everything. IMO none of the background lore in MP1 was ever this clever. Like, the sheer foreshadowing of that makes my writer bones rattle with jealousy.

I totally agree, Prime 2 is still an amazing looking game to this day and the lore of Aether is fantastic. I also love how the world changes as you slowly fix the light world and destroy the dark world. The boss fights are also amazing and hugely inventive. The Spider Guardian, Quadraxis, Dark Samus and the Emperor Ing stand out especially. Masterpiece - in fact it should get 11/10.

    • RE: Is the Scorpio enough to make you switch mid generation?

I don't care about 4k at all but I love games running at 60fps.

If the Scorpio can start to consistently deliver 60fps console gaming (and patch-up things like The Witcher 3 and Rise of the Tomb Raider to run at 60fps) then I'm sold, so long as the price isn't insane.

    • RE: Gamecube Virtual Console?

I really want there to be some kind of way to play Gamecube games in the future since it's becoming a pain to keep the old box hooked up to my TV when newer consoles are fighting for the spot.

I know Dolphin is great but my PC can't run it at the right speed. I also know that in theory my Wii U could be hacked to allow me to play 'cube games but it all looks to complicated for me. :-\

There are a few other things I'm sure but Sunset Overdrive was a recent one - I was already interested but Huber talking it up pushed me over the edge into getting it... and of course it was awesome.

    • RE: The lack of SIFTD and EZA cross-over seem strange to anybody?

      @Mango
Thanks for the replies all. I think you've probably hit on things pretty accurately - I love both GameFace and also the EZA podcasts but they do indeed have different 'vibes' to them in both general style and the way the conversations go. I think over at SIFTD Shane has found a really good 'co-host' to bounce-off in Matt in that they can sometimes get quite intense and argumentative when they disagree about something but then immediately switch into being totally chilled out and amiable as soon as they switch topics. By contrast I think the same style or conversation / debate that Shane is good at would sometimes rub other people the wrong way back on Invisible Walls.

Anyway, I'd still love to see some more crossover. Whether you agree or disagree with him, Shane is good at sparking conversations and debates and often comes at things from another angle than the norm which is one of the reasons I really respect him.

For that matter, it would be cool to see Keighly, Elyse, Justin, Megan or somebody else of the 'old GT crew' pop up some time with the EZA gang as a guest.

    • RE: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (NS/WiiU)

Hmm... I'll wait and see. I just can't see Zelda delivering either an open-world or an epic story and characters that are anything remotely close to the likes of The Witcher 3.

Where Zelda has always excelled is in it's excellent dungeons and puzzles, where the franchise is head-and-shoulders above any rivals. Yet, we haven't seen much of that for BOTW.

Also, that frame-rate looks really ropey on the Wii U. I know there is still time to polish but I'm hoping maybe the Switch can do better (praying for 60fps).

    • RE: Games you hate that everyone else seems to love.

My really weird one is Super Metroid which is especially strange since I love Metroid Zero Mission, Fusion and the recent AM2R (and also many other Metroidvanias, including the Prime games). I just find Super so incredibly slow, floaty and awkward by comparison, plus I actually find the pacing and world/level design in the other games to be way better.

Sonic Mania is looking amazing. I almost never pre-order things but I went and pre-purchased this immediately after this trailer (so as soon as the option became available).

Played it last year at EGX and the gameplay is perfect while all of the levels shown thus far have looked amazing.

This is also making me realise how much I miss Tails and Knuckles - they haven't been playable since the Sonic Advance games back in the early 2000s. :'-(
