@Black-Cell That's almost exactly how I feel about Madden.

    • Will you be buying Rise of the Tomb Raider for PS4?

I know I will. I've been coveting it ever since the reviews it got when it released for XB1. How about the rest of you? I expect to see it perform much better this time, just because Lara is such a PlayStation icon. I don't think its lackluster initial sales were due to competition from Fallout 4 and others, I think it's because XBox gamers just don't have much of a connection to Tomb Raider. What do you think?

My PSN name is FatDave2112. At the time, I largely went by Fat Dave online, but then I lost over 100 pounds. Fortunately I'm steadily gaining it back, so it works for me again. And I never stopped liking Rush.:-)

Valor, but it was kind of a no-brainer for me. My kids chose Valor before I hit level 5, and turned out a couple of my other friends were Valorites, so... OK. Done.

@Mortambulist Believe it or not, most people are not good at their jobs. Especially in programming/development.

Oh, I believe it. I live it every day. I mean, not that I'm that great, I'm lazy as fuck, but when I do do my I job, I take some pride in it. ;-)

@suplextrain It's actually pretty simple. Just don't make the name the primary key (the value by which everything is linked and indexed). Put a unique constraint on the name so no two people can have the same name, but make the actual primary key some randomly generated unique ID (GUID's are great for this) that is never displayed, never changes, and serves to keep everything linked. Then the user name/ID is just another piece of data that can be changed at will. Whoever designed PSN's data structure should be taken out and shot for using the username as the primary key. It's a seriously amateur mistake.

This is interesting to me because for the longest time I thought Sony just didn't care, but apparently it's because they don't have a system that is capable of handling name changes.

They basically made one of the most amateur programming mistakes possible when they built PSN.

    • RE: The Kerbal Space Program PS4 port is pretty rough.

@StuffOnARock Don't get me wrong, it's still a super-fun game for anybody who likes deep simulations and/or science (particularly physics). I've gotten entirely used to the interface, and judging by the youtube videos I've watched the graphics and audio glitches are largely carried over from the PC version. The crashes are still annoying but mostly crop up at the same point, so I've learned to quicksave right before that. Given the amount of fun this is providing (and seems like it will for quite a long time) the $40 asking price is reasonable. I'd call it 4 out of 5, but I'm a huge nerd for this kind of stuff.

    • RE: What are your most anticipated games for rest of 2016 and 2017?

No Man's Sky. I really hope review copies go out early because as hopeful as I am, I wouldn't mind a little reassurance at this point.

Horizon Zero Dawn. I mean come ON!

The remaining Fallout 4 DLC. I burned out on the main game for a few months, but Far Harbor pulled me back in recently. Now I could go for some more.

I might try I Am Setsuna, but as much as I enjoy JRPG's, I'm terrible about finishing them. Same goes for Persona 5. I really want to play it, but so worried it'll end up just another unfinished story in my collection.

The Last Guardian, dependent on reviews.

There's a good chance I'll jump into PlayStation VR. If I do I'll stock up on Dramamine just in case.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

@Whoaness Yeah, doesn't seem to do anything, at least not pointer-wise. Clicking it toggles the HUD on and off, but swiping does nothing. I was gonna try a USB mouse, but I've figured out how to avoid the pointer for everything I commonly do already.

@DMCMaster No idea. I did hear they were going to support the touch screen, so it could be pretty slick. Assuming they take the time to do it right. Not too sure about this team that's doing the porting, though.

    • The Kerbal Space Program PS4 port is pretty rough.

For starters, they gave about zero fucks toward adapting the interface to a controller, so you basically move a mouse pointer with the left stick or sixaxis (which thankfully can be disabled). Then there's the way the music randomly cuts out, the graphical glitches, and the frequent crashing. Seriously, in maybe 10 hours of play so far, the thing has blue-screened at least three times. I didn't play the PC port, maybe it's buggy too, but damn...

All that said, I'm having a hell of a lot of fun playing it (and learning some basic rocket science, too). I can live with the mouse-stick interface. It's relatively tweakable, and I've pretty much gotten used to it. There are some button-combo shortcuts for a lot of things, if I memorized them I could probably avoid a lot of it. A stability patch would sure be nice though.

As a general rule, if you're worried you may have a problem, you probably don't. As long as it isn't hurting anyone, do whatever makes you happy.

    • RE: Games with the strongest atmosphere

I'll second the votes for the first 3 Silent Hill games. Each one covers everything from creepy to straight-up horrifying.

If you're open to walking simulators, Everyone's Gone to the Rapture has great atmosphere. Everything's dripping with an unsettling peacefulness. Gone Home also has very good atmosphere. Walking through that house just feels like the early 90's.

      And Bloodborne, of course.

    • RE: About that: Lack of evolution in games

Let me add to that that nobody should watch Citizen Kane or Casablanca because they're in black and white. And Schindler's List, Raging Bull, etc...they're just trying to push substandard films by appealing to nostalgia. And stuff like Clerks, or Following, or Pi? Look, I understand they were little indie movies by first-time filmmakers with tiny crews and tinier budgets, but they should understand that the less they invest in their movies, the less they'll get back. Not like any of those kicked off any long, distinguished lucrative careers, right? If I see a new movie shot in black and white, whether for stylistic or budgetary reasons, I'm not even gonna bother. I mean who has time for outdated technology when there's so many colorful flashy CGI superhero spectacles coming out constantly?

    • RE: What's Your Passion Project?

TL;DR - Converting a school bus into an RV

If there's one thing I've learned about myself, it's that I'm terrible at completing my projects. I'm amazing at beginning them, and at trying all kinds of new things, but finishing them...well, I never seem to get around to that part, because some other hobby catches my interest. I think my next unfinished project should be to catalog all my other unfinished projects.

Sure, I have a couple semi-baked game projects, currently stalled at the "Learning Unity" phase, that I may get back to someday, but I don't want to say too much about those.

But thing is, lately I can't shake the idea of buying a used school bus and converting it into an RV. The idea started because for reasons beyond my control, I live in a tiny town an hour away most of my friends in what passes for The Big City in Iowa. I can't really go out drinking with them without arranging a place to crash for the night, and not only do I not like imposing, I sleep poorly in my own bed most of the time.

So I get thinking, if I had a nice 70's-style conversion van--no, a bus!--I could drink all night, stumble "home" and crash out. "Where you staying tonight, Dave?" "Walnut Street bridge, by the old library."

But the more I thought about it... See, I work almost entirely from home, and my youngest kid is only 5 years short of 18. If I had decent cellular internet and a bus/home, I could literally travel the country, live on the road, see friends and family everywhere, and still do my job to support my vagabond lifestyle. I wouldn't need a house or an apartment, so that money could go towards diesel fuel.

I kinda really, really want to do this. It's just I'm afraid that I'll save up the money and buy a bus just to watch it rust away in my driveway while I take up hog calling or some shit.

@SabotageTheTruth said in What's Your Passion Project?:

I either want to create a Youtube channel or a blog (I constantly flip-flop over both) that curates an album and a game together...

You could always do both. A blog that links to your videos and elaborates in the text. At any rate, it's a really cool idea, so I hope you pursue it.
