Yet, I can rarely bring myself to focus on these amazing games after finishing work
I adore these ge and a have a similar issue though for me it's often I get sidetracked by another shorter game or leave for too long and don't return.
My current rpg play list is.
Witcher 3
Persona 5
Pathffinder kingmaker
Pillar of eternity 2
Xenoblade 1 and 2
All of them are amazing And literally all of those games I have played upwards of 20 hour of at some point haha.
Some praise about wasteland 3 I heard was that it never quiets down its always pulling you along so that might be a bonus and frankly 50 hours is a blessing compared to many of those above.
Pop-tart:
returnal
Housemarque are great and glad to see them taking this route
Ratchet and clank(if it release in that period) Insomniac baby
Toaster struddle:
bad vibes for sure but Balan Wonderworld frankly has me worried.
@hidz
i'm in the same boat but the price of psvr has been droping so much and not to mention the sure to be refined VR ps5 edition it will be hard to pass up.
@brannox
As u can see it was my number 3 and at that time I was just mid game (still am haha) but yes the frustration means I only play it in minor chunks around an hour,
but it is very much a each time you try you make it a little further type game so that's what's kept me in and the music and early story hints are very good as well. So even without finishing it yet it's a pretty easy 3rd for me since my first 2 are much higher up.
DMC5 was a surprise to me, the only previous one I played was the reboot(which was pretty good)but I really loved this.
I had fun with the story(I watched a playthrough of 3 and 4 beforehand) and loved the dork and Charm 5 had.
If I had stopped on my first playthrough it likely would have been a honerable mention but the replay on son of sparda really sold the game to me.
with all the unlocks it really felt like the base game is almost an intro where you learn the weapons, get the unlocks and understand the basics (especially since late game they pile so many new weapons and moves on you that it can be overwhelming)
by the end I made it my goal to beat the "final" boss without using any of the gold orbs/revives etc and was a great send off for the game for me(also being the night before sekiros release. )
But ultimately this was a game that I was surprised how much I enjoyed despite its flaws(level design, V combat) and exceeded my expectations with wonderful combat one of the best final boss's and just a general level of fun and accepting it's a game (Doom 2016 gives me similar vibes) where as sekiro kinda ended up the opposite... I'll get to that later.
Edit: also excellent music and graphics
three houses was my first Fire Emblem and really loved it (like others the switch is not perfect for me since it's docked 98% of the time but it gets some really solid games)
I don't play many tactics games(recently) but i am a massive RPG guy and honestly the combat is not all that difference from games like Divinity:OS2 anyway. i did really enjoy the combat but the characters, Vibe and Story are what i really love about 3 houses.
the main plot does the typical JRPG thing and just throws everything at you, so even though parts can be predictable there is just so many reveals and secrets that i still don't know (currently at 160hours having done black eagles and about 1/2 through Golden deer route) as that play time might tell you i enjoy trying to maximise the numbers game and also just like talking to all the students.
the students and Vibe were my favourite aspects of the game while at first i thought they might just be very one note characters, which they are to a degree eg. i'm the strong one, i'm the shut-in and i sleep(and am the only male gay romance option).
they are well written and most are well developed and have reasons for the way they are, they also do a great job of drawing parallels or differences between characters during their support conversations.
overall the Vibe was great since almost everyone felt so driven to achieve their goals and strive for the future even if some of those goals might be a little "evil" or if some character had terrible stuff happen to them.(alot of political assassinations)
but yeah really loved it in any other year it would not be my number 1 since it has some obvious flaws especially with graphics(switch and game size) and some weird class progression quirks but easily beat out this years competition for me (i know what the top 2 left are but for the life of me i can't think of the third)
P.S.

hubert gets more hate than he deserves.
caspar deserves all the hate he gets.
curious to see if lorenz is ever not a shithead.

Oblivion just has a tone that is impossible to replicate
100% agree, likely why games like dragons dogma get so much love as well they just have a vibe that is so likeable/quirky.
Big fan of the resistance series but resistance 3 is the one I remember the least about and enjoyed the least, from memory it had more of a horror vibe that I didn't love.
Would still love a series remaster that first game espically is rough to return to with the blurry browness of many early last gen games.

Overall, I felt like as soon as I started to grasp the combat system, I had to switch characters, or a new weapon or playstyle was introduced, way faster than I could ever hope to master them.
an interesting thing i heard early on in my playthrough (think maybe Maximilian dood) is that your first playthrough is basically the tutorial to give you all the gear and abilities you need for the harder difficulties (eg you get neros "mode" in literally the final fight.)(not saying its a smart idea)
cause i felt kinda the same especially with dante late game he got so many new weapons, what helped was just focusing to reading the ability menus and basically just sticking to 1 or 2 weapons.
what really put dmc5 as my 2nd for last year was my hard playthrough, where i basically had all the tools and i could just focus on mastering them, i remember spending 2 hours on "V" at the end because i just wanted to beat him without using any revivals and really master him(and this was literally the night before i got sekiro)
also this was the first game of this type when it finally clicked after just mashing my way through bayonetta years ago(which i really wanna replay now)
update:
beat some new games but no backlog picks
Dropping
Jedi:fallen order 7ish hours
weird? this game ran rather badly on my ps4 pro and all around just felt clunky, maybe because of the gameplay style i was expecting it to feel much more like GOW(2018) and dark souls but ehh it just would not click, i made it to wookee planet and dropped it, from what i've heard i'm around a 3rd or more into it and yeah... also alot of bugs mutiple hitches and god that loot and progression just feels worthless.
Playing
-Active-
FF7 OG(25hours)
added another 5 hours on, just got cid
P5 Royal (7hours)
hoping to beat it before xenoblade remake... don't like my chances. am loving it though
The last of us remake(5 hours)
only played it once and was pretty ian hinck about it so i want to see if i like it more... edit:enjoying it more and it's a good side game among my behemoths
Assassins creed:Origins
have not liked an ac game since brotherhood, so gonna try jumping back onboard, Going to be my side ape-brain game once i finish TLOU and am stuck in the JRPG heaven (and hell) of P5 though xenoblade remake.(btw am so excited for xenoblade after loving what i played of XC2)
-on pause-
Pathfinder:kingmaker(it's gonna be a while)
20 hours in... hopefully <100 to go
Ori and the will of the wisps(2 hours)
on game pass like it but doom took priority.
Death stranding(15hours)
been a couple months but might try to mainline it a little more i spent alot of time building roads and then lost interest because the story had slowed down....because i was building roads.
Demons souls remaster and a proper ratchet and clank game and I'm set for ps5.
Wild dreams
Starfield and a naughty dog jak game.
i'm that guy who bought the Chinese version of demons souls off eBay before its western release, so i was obviously primed for dark souls and it is my number 1 game ever (demons is close and i don't love bloodbornes horror vibe as much, though i think it is the better game).
obviously i love the level design and general rpg-ness but i have also always loved the lore and storytelling of the souls games as apposed to a more cinematic style.
i am a little surprised that is not higher. though batman, skyrim and portal 2(all also in my top 4) are all wonderful... "casual" games"
my guess is portal 2 will have the most #1 votes though i think skyrim could win with just more numbers. batmans a wildcard(and i havent played it since release so my memory is rusty).
Edit:An interesting thought I have about souls style games is they kind of have their own genre language, kinda like fighting games or shooters once you learn that you basically understand all of them. It's just that those others have games to bridge the gap/introduce you like smash bros or call of duty, where as souls kinda started its own thing and throws you straight into doom eternal or tekken 7 with no tutorial.
the bridging games came later like jedi fallen order etc.
i felt like 4 just made vheicles useless haha.
Brigandine: The Legend of Runersia has me kinda excited(fire emblem vibes), but will wait for the reception of it,
desparados 3 is interesting but i likely wont have time for it with xenoblade.
obviously will play TLOU2 but am personally not that excited for it, i don't like the uncharted games much though TLOU was my fave out of naughty dogs modern games and the dodging mechanics and heavy stealth look promising.
note: i am expecting to like TLOU2 quite a bit but i expect doom, FF7 and cyberpunk to beat it out by years end.
Day 3: 8-Bit
not as old as some(or i assume many) on here so the only one that would count would be
Youtube Video
nice picks b-cell love the modern dooms but have never visited the older ones, and while i did play some of the orange box on ps3 i wouldn't say it was a great introduction to half life in particular(recently bought them all along with the 1st deus ex on gog/steam for like $5)
also with hitman the only one i ever played was absolution...so yeah i bought the modern ones recently so will jump in at some point though i do enjoy watching people play them
i will try not to overthink this but my list would go something like this.
am slowing chipping away at the old final fantasy(6,7,9,10 are on my list) would likely be higher if i had played more (played 4,13 and remake(part way through 7 now))
AOE1 and 2 was basically the only pc game i had that i could play reliably until my mum got internet access in 2007(which was 500mb/month btw, love being rural)
never played 2 or finished 3 but they are on the list(weird how much i love these considering 4 was my introduction haha)
would love to say dragon age (please let 4 be good) but mass effect was just so much more consistent.
my go too for fighting games when i do dabble.7 is the current best fighting game though respect for Smash.
i just have to include these for ps2 trilogy alone.
adore fallout 3 honestly might be my top bethesda game haven't touched the first 2 yet but plan to with my more recent dive into crpgs(divinity:os2, pathfinder:kingmaker etc).
weird that they haven't done anything for 5 years.
Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim...i like fantasy and RPGs this is an obvious choice. sure there are arguably better RPG's (witcher 3) i still don't think anything comes close to the freedom D&D style like elder scrolls that is not a top down crpg since skyrim.
thankfully cyberpunk 2077(deus ex) and likely more so vampire the masquerades 2 both seem to be approaching that gameplay style.
honestly as a franchise as a whole i could make arguments for this being my number 1 choice but the fact that none of the individual games quite reach the level as some of those above it (dark souls and god of war 2/2018) make me admit it too a number 3 spot.
i have just always loved these it's classic 3D action platformer but with a greater focus on weapons than most. it does some of the best humour in video games with some great consumerism based humour in the first 2 especially.
on that note 2(going commando) is one of the most perfect sequels ever perfectly improving and expanding on everything from the first. i think 2 takes the first place but up your arsenal(best combat fittingly) and a crack in time(best story) are both excellent with the rest of the mainline games mostly being great, shame that they are basically all locked on last gen(thankfully they basically all ran at 60fps and the HD collection in particular still looks great.)
oh and while the ps4 "remake of the movie" is fun the story changes and humour just miss so much of the first games charm especially and also seems to aim at a younger audience like the movie.
this might be Number 1 if i could include demons souls and bloodborne but that feels a little cheap, i just love these game's and especially how they handle story and lore. being a RPG and fantasy fan in general i just adore the vibe and feel of playing these and am likely in the minority in my preference of dark souls(and demons souls) over bloodborne.
sadly dark souls 2 is a weak point for me, it's still fine but it really misses the things i love about souls(though i did beat it 3 times)
have loved the franchise since the first and while the 2018 game has received it's deserved praise it's still not a clear winner over God of war 2 personally and the fact that the worst game in the franchise (ascension) is still a good game says alot.
the early games a perfect teenager games at the time with just violence and rage and a story that is fun and epic with a handfull of more meaningful moments and the ps4 game is just all round wonderful and in particular i love the writing/dialogue so many games still over explain with dialogue because they can't rely on the acting as much to convey information.
Happy three houses and cuphead made the cut both are great genre games, if you are a fan of that genre they are must plays, sadly never revisited Cuphead after the stupid 3 headed dragon boss.
i still love skyrim even though it starts to stray into the streamlining(removing attributes, not much skill based dialogue etc) that i am starting to hate more and more of modern bethesda games of which i think fallout 3 strikes the perfect balance of.
though skyrim is just pure freedom that i love, that few other Rpgs come close too even today, and those that do are usually CRPG's and don't do 3rd/1st person gameplay(ONE of Note i still hope shows up).
not to mention it's just classic oldschool fantasy, not gritty, political and realistic like witcher 3 or game of thrones and not anime(as much as i love those). just good old "chosen one of legend" and magic and dragons.
it's ultimatly just RPG comfort food for me. when you want you can try more intersting or challengineing style of play or u can just play classic stealth archer with some magic
OK well here are my number 1 and 3.(poor divinity....#2 in my heart)
Dark souls-3rd
Just adore this game and franchise jumped in from the very start with demons souls(tied for fave souls game) basically love how it tells the story and the amazing level and world design Only real reason it's 3rd place is Lost Izalith. it's the only major fault i could see when comparing it to others in my list (many of my top 5 are interchanagable)
God OF WAR...1st
loved the series since the start, i personally put GOW2 on a similar level as 2018 and it kinda irk's me when people dismiss the earlier games and stories, Kinda like DMC they were perfect for those games at the time and still had there (majority) epic and touching moments (Calliope, Pandora in gow 3 etc)
GOW just does a perfect job of modernising and reinventing a series without throwing out it's history or essence of it's design, it still feels like a GOW game. basically why it took number one for me is there is frankly no aspect of the game that i can subtract point from. sure there and things that could be better(progression, combat, the fact that Boys rebellious phase is both too short from story perspective and too long gameplay wise).
and i just love that story there are so many moving moment, the acting and Writing(to many games overexplain things or avoid subtilty) is great, i also love(like with darksouls) there is still mysteries and unawnsered questions and so much you can learn by paying attention (the marks left by faye, who blew the horn, the history of the world(tyr and faye espically))
