    • RE: Animal Crossing Pocket Camp (Mobile)

Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp is my first ever Animal Crossing game and I'm enjoying it quite a bit.

To me, AC as a series always seemed very mobile gamey, full of waiting and repetitive activities, not really the kind of thing I wanted out of a console or even handheld experience. But this kind of playstyle has been really doing it for me when I can just put in 15 minutes at a time, in the bathroom or waiting in line.

The game is cute as all hell, I've grown attached to a few (but not most) of my animal friends, and there's an inherent pleasure (DOPAMINE) in watching all my little bars go up. Plus the drive to unlock all the furniture (even if not crafting it) is very real, and I expect Nintendo to add more over time.

However, even without having played other Animal Crossings, I can tell how much the game has been simplified. The repeating dialogue and frankly pitiful collectable variety make that very apparent. I think my biggest complaint is actually something that I believe is true of "real" AC games: not enough interactions. I quite enjoy The Sims, so I find myself wishing I could do things like play my guitar and get better, cook some stew over a campfire, or watch TV with my guests.

At the end of the day, though, it feels like Pocket Camp is a much more robust than the average mobile game while other Animal Crossings seemed much more limited than other console games. I have been playing the game vigorously over the past couple days, but expect to slow down quite a lot, especially as I'm getting real happy with my camp and outfit while simultaneously running out of space to put things. I imagine my engagement with the game will REALLY peter out once I hit level cap and meet all the animals, and that's fine. I've put $1 into the game, don't expect to put in any more, and feel like I've gotten much, much more than my money's worth.

      4/5 Stars

    • RE: Overwatch (PC/PS4/XB1)

As someone who's pretty burned out on Overwatch, I'm very much looking forward to just booting up deathmatch every once in a while and going for frags. Good time to introduce the game mode I feel.

    • RE: Ben's Dojo

I'm in a Guilty Gear character crisis right now. I like Millia's rushdown but I find vortex setplay super boring. I like Baiken's neutral but everyone says she's one of the worst characters in the game and I am not a low tier god. I feel like Ky is my character but I don't want to be the kind of boring guy who just plays Ky. Plus I think playing Ky makes me keep trying to play Street Fighter in GG instead of playing GG.

If any discord mods see this I think it would be really cool to have a "Dojo" channel in the discord to help organize games.

Edit: it happened. Join the discord to organize games! Honestly more convenient than pestering people on your friend's list ;)

Only looking for GG games and only on Steam, but desperate for people to play against. I've played a lot of SFIV+V but this is my first airdasher.

    • Let's talk about Deponia Doomsday

Only just got around to playing this game, even though it originally came out in March (I didn't know it existed until about a month ago).

I'm going to start off this post with a spoiler free TL;DR

There is a trilogy of point-and-click adventure games called Deponia that, as a whole, is my favorite adventure game of all time (the protagonist is my avatar). The third game had a very controversial ending among fans, prompting the developers to release a fourth game (Deponia Doomsday) 3 years after the end of the trilogy. The game is basically a long, creative "fuck you" to people who didn't like the original ending.

      spoilers below

So personally, I thought the original ending was great. I felt it was thematically consistent even if it was a downer and put a great cap on the whole adventure. It's a big part of why I love the original trilogy so much. Before playing this game, I was really worried about this fourth game messing up the story, but it totally doesn't. In fact, the whole game is pretty much the player trying to change things for the better while only making things worse, at the same time there is very unsubtle commentary from various characters about why the original ending is the way it is. Very, very meta. As someone who liked the original ending a lot, I got tired of the constant preaching, but I do think it could sway people who wanted the "better ending".

As a game, I was really blown away. I honestly expected the game to be mostly reused assets, but there was a ton of work put into the game. I think you visit just one old location, and even then there are only 2 reused screens (which are additionally changed from their original appearances). Some characters return, but mostly as cameos and the returning characters that are present for a lot of the game get a visual change meaning they had to redo all their animations. The new characters they added are good as well and I loved the new companion (McChronicle). Overall I think the creativity in locations and story really floored me. So much cool, creative stuff that you had to do, even if I didn't think the puzzles themselves were all that great. The plot is really off the rails, way way more than in the original games.

Ultimately, they did the thing I feared they were going to do and changed the ending. But they did it in a way I wasn't expecting and I do think it's superior now. I'm just glad that the Deponia team stuck to their guns for the most part and kept the heart of the ending the same.

The actual fall of Rufus wasn't as good, however. The image of him laughing while plummeting to his doom always stuck with me: a man doing the ultimate "selfless deed", but still as childish as ever. Now he falls with a face of fear, which takes a lot out of the acceptance of his death.

      potato

Away from my gaming PC while I'm back home for Christmas break. Tried playing Overwatch on my laptop... not the best.

    • At this point I like All Star unironically

Especially because of the mashup. It's almost always in my head, and I don't hate it. Has this happened to anyone else?

@Fridge-man I actually also just got the other two Halloween legendaries in two in-a-row boxes. If that makes you feel any better.

    • RE: Overwatch (PC/PS4/XB1)

@SabotageTheTruth Yeah, I was totally wrong. Still surprised, but I'm glad they added, like Damiani said, a "light at the end of the tunnel".

Like I said before though, I kind of think of these seasonal events as my time to pay my "subscription" to Overwatch so I didn't really have a problem with buying a few boxes. I spent $20, got the Mercy and Reaper skins (the two legendaries I wanted), a few of the new purples, and made enough coin to pick up Coldhardt. I don't really care about much else in the update; I never play Junkrat and I have a copy of each of the two other Roadhog legendaries which I actually like better anyway. The only thing I still really want is the Reaper highlight intro, and I kind of want the Pharah and Ana skins. It's nice to think about how I can definitely make enough coin to buy the highlight intro and if I don't get the other two I won't be losing any sleep.

Not like the Mercy Olympic skin... God damn. I looked at the preview and in the current Halloween lighting it looks even better than usual right now.
