    • RE: The Naughty Dog Agenda

So... watching that video, the creator keeps mentioning as long as the same-sex relationships don't actively affect the story, it shouldn't matter. He's not sexist or homophobic, he just values a good story. He mentions several times that Naughty Dog crafts great stories but then relies on tweets to make an argument that an agenda is being forced upon him? He states that the focus should never be on the sexuality of a character yet takes such a deep dive into Twitter accounts to prove how important that sexuality actually is.

"There's an over-emphasis on female characters." - when talking about The Last of Us II, and then goes on to mention three female characters. THREE female characters is too many? He mentions there is absolutely no point in showing Ellie kissing Dina, that the scene doesn't pertain to the gameplay, yet that edit of the trailer is done very intentionally - she is told by someone sharing an intimate moment that people should be afraid of her, cut to Ellie murdering a bunch of people, cut back to her smiling brightly.

The creator of the video mentions several times how hostile people are against his opinions, stating he doesn't mean anyone harm, he just wants a good story... And yet there isn't a single example he provided of how women have made Naughty Dog games "worse". He provides no examples on why Ellie being a lesbian makes the story suffer. He spends twenty minutes not really saying anything besides, "look at all the women in games now! That's different from the games I used to play," which isn't an argument. Women don't make stories worse. Members of the LGBTQ community don't make stories worse.

I'm a straight white male who values story the most in games. When I (rarely) see a character that isn't straight in a game, I don't think the developers are trying to make me more "accepting", I think they created a character that happens to have a different sexual orientation - kinda like how I have the chance to run into people like that when I walk around in the real world. We have SO many games that star a straight white male protagonist that happens to be buff and is named Jack or Tom or John yet I don't think any one of us would claim that's an agenda being pushed, that's just the character that was created for the game. So if a different sort of character is created, why do people immediately assume it's an "agenda"? Even if you could prove without a doubt that Naughty Dog has a grand scheme that they're unleashing on the world, this video admits the scheme would be for acceptance... and why would acceptance ever be a bad thing?

I made a very conscious choice to dismantle the logic of the video here itself and not personally attack you, because I would like to avoid creating that conflict as much as possible here on the forums but wow... this video, I could not be more opposed to its overall message.

Ya'll... five days ago we were celebrating the Patreon had hit 6,360 patrons, we're now at 6,565 and just broke the $45,000 mark. Granted, I know there's a dip at the end of the month due to credit card declines so that may not be a final total yet, but the numbers just keep rising and rising. Now seems to be the perfect time to spread the word since this momentum is really in full swing.

    • Easy Allies Writing Club

So let me preface this by saying I'm really enjoying my time here on these forums and realize it's filled with a lot of interesting, well-spoken people. I like the idea of creating even more unique ways that we can all interact and considering we're using forums to communicate with each other, all of us must enjoy writing in some regard. What I'm suggesting is a writing club of sorts, where we all are given a prompt and have to write a short story using it within two weeks. I've pretty much plucked the idea from the now defunct Fantasy Fiction (episode chosen due to one of my questions being answered towards the end.)

I'd want us to be relatively rule-free. You can write in whatever style you choose and length is entirely up to you. Whether it's a poem or a screenplay, anything goes. Even if you're not feeling that particular prompt, the main goal here is to write and read what others have written, the prompts are just to help those that need an extra nudge.

Edit: A Google doc has been created here as a hub to hold all the stories. If you want to be added on, reply on this thread with the name you want and your link, or send me a message, whichever you prefer. Please add a "recently updated on xx/xx/xxxx" towards the top of your page so I can fill out the main page appropriately.

    • 2016 - A Look Back

First things first, if you clicked on this thinking it was going to be list of best releases, or even discussion about them, this isn't the right place. Sorry!

As we approach the end of the year, the overwhelming sentiment people I'm in contact with have expressed is that 2016 is "the worst year ever," generally citing celebrity deaths and election results as their reasoning. This got me thinking, and although my usual devil's advocate nature kicked in, I have seen this year as one of rebuilding.

Let's get personal, because hey, why not. The beginning of the year found me without a job, crippled with anxiety, and doubting any self-worth I had gained up until that point. I dusted myself off with encouragement from friends and quickly found an awful job at another soul-crushing call center and dreaded every moment in that building. I would watch Gametrailers videos on my lunch breaks to help ease the pain and I distinctly remember seeing the Bloodborne "10" put up. I was confused at first but a quick gaze through the comment sections gave me terrible news - this crew of lovable fellas was getting shut down.

I honestly just felt lost. It was a strange experience then, it's a strange experience to recount now. I had formed bonds with people whom I had never met, just from hearing their opinions and ideas on a daily basis. It had become part of my routine and it was stripped away at the time I needed it the most. I would fervently check the Twitter pages of each member that remained when things closed down. I remember starting to browse other gaming sites to try and pick up news and just feeling like I had cheated on my significant other.

I was on break at work, doing research in the bathroom when bam! I saw it. I'll link the video below but I'm sure we've all seen it by now. I've never felt such elation (especially given my location at the time); it honestly felt more surreal than I could have imagined. A week later, I receive an email from my dream job inviting me on board. I went from "THE WORLD IS ENDING, I CAN'T HANDLE THIS," to "Oh hey, everything is actually really good and better than it's been in years," in a matter of weeks.

Once the forum was announced, I decided I would do the unthinkable - I would join an online community for the first time in my life. What I was greeted with far exceeded my expectations and interacting with all of you on a daily basis is an absolute treat. There is such an undeniable passion that exists in the content that the Allies create and it overflows here. Even when my gaming sensibilities disagree with an opinion here, I can't help but be fascinated all the same. I can't thank all of you enough for defining love and respect, it's been a life-changing experience for myself.

I guess the point of this inane rambling is that even when times are dark, things can always change in an instant. You just have to be willing to seize the opportunities given to you. If you share the sentiment that 2016 is the worst thing ever, just try to take some solace in the fact that we at least got to witness the formation of EZA and we're on this crazy rocket ship to the sun together.

    • RE: EZA Group Streams

I'm slowly working my way through the stream via YouTube and wow... just incredible. For some reason, the rhetoric in the community after the 2 year anniversary was that things were stagnating, that we're not getting enough new content, and the usual "more scripted, less podcasts" comment. Numbers were starting to slip a bit and even I'll admit, I had small pangs of worry. That's why it's even more jolly to see the results of this stream, the Patreon numbers rising, and even cool collabs like the Cory Barlog Spoiler Mode coming to fruition. You can tell how much the support meant to all the fellas and I'm a major fan of most of the changes. More early access content, finally removing the awful group stream committee vote, etc.

It serves as a needed reminder as to what makes the Allies so special. I could see a lot of creators continuing to let things decline or finding excuses for why things don't work but even after a small dip, they took immediate action and came up with a plan. It's also great to see our community hasn't lost faith and will continue to help in any way that we can. I honestly cannot wait to see this E3 coverage.

    • RE: Cup of Jones Episode Guide

Basically, @naltmank summed up my thoughts pretty perfectly. Apologies I'm a little late to this entire discussion, I've been behind on my EZA log lately.

I think the best approach to this entire situation is "forgive but don't forget." Should I ever see this person in the forum or see them submit more art for one of Kyle's streams, there's absolutely no way I can forget the comment they supplied to Jones. There should always be some form of consequence for your actions, even if that consequence is just having a bit of a reputation. Now, would I take it to the next level and purposely be rude or bring up this particular incident? Not at all. Jones handled this matter in such a beautiful way that I would never want to go against his apparent wishes. With Jones' heartfelt response, I truly hope he receives an apology from the person in question and everyone can move forward.

I've got to say though, I truly admire how Jones embodied the mantra of "love and respect" in his response, despite how hard and potentially painful that must have been. It's nice to get a fresh reminder of what it truly means, even if the circumstances leading up to it aren't the greatest.

    • Completed Games of 2019

The thread for 2018 seemed to be a success and I know it personally helped me stay on track, so I've decided to keep the momentum going into the new year. Just simply comment on this thread with a list of games you've completed/finished throughout the year. The game doesn't need to be released in 2019, nor did you have to start playing it this year, just something you got to the end of/saw credits for.

I don't want to make this a rule heavy thread since it should be light and breezy, but I'll include a few things that help out down below.

      • Instead of creating a new post each time you complete something, edit your original posting. Not only does this make it easier on me when I tally up games at the end of each month, it lets you actually build a list.
      • For keeping your list organized, I highly recommend you label each month with the games completed and a tally of your total. Not mandatory but again, easier for everyone involved.

      • This isn't a place to discuss your thoughts on a game. It ends up cluttering the thread and we have tons of places to do that already.

      • Please don't include any multiplayer games without endings. Games like Overwatch and Fortnite aren't intended to be completed so they aren't really viable on this list.

      • Feel free to start working on your list whenever you want, even if that's halfway through the year or later. If you're replaying a game entirely, you can include it if you want to.

      • I'll be bumping the thread around the end of each month giving totals for where everyone is at. This isn't a competition, it's just to help remind everyone to update things if they haven't gotten around to it yet.

Now that's out of the way, let's get to it! Good luck with this year everyone, I hope you get to play lots of exciting things.

It's not my favorite Final Fantasy but it probably has the best opening in the series. The great vibes of Zanarkand mixed with some blitzball action, Sin beginning to destroy the city, and Auron just overall being an ominous badass. It's not a style of music I normally gravitate towards, but still the song is killer. The best part of this opening? No Kimarhi.

    • RE: Constructive Feedback: Equality, Diversity and Sexualization in Games

I think the problem lies with forcing characters to fit certain traits as opposed to just having them be a part of the story. Games aren't as egregious as movies and television in this regard; I'm sure we're all familiar with the sassy gay guy trope by now. Certain people will point out that a particular show is progressive because it has a homosexual character but then all of that character's screen time is devoted to pointing out his sexual preference and not fleshing him out as a character. Obviously this issue transcends to other minorities as well, I just figured I'd use it as an example.

Now on the gaming side of things, I feel I have to mention Gone Home. Yes, it can be a little heavy handed in its messaging but at the core of it, it tells a story about two characters, fleshes out their identities, and they just happen to be two females that love each other. I haven't played Virginia, but apparently (just like Gone Home) it has been under internet criticism for having a black/female protagonist. It's important that these games exist and it's also equally important that they exist with purpose; the games weren't just created to highlight diversity, they had story and meaning outside of that.

If we want more examples of this in gaming, I'd say we need more writers with different backgrounds in development teams. It is extremely difficult to write an entire character (especially that of a minority) without a deep understanding of the culture around that character. Write what you know, basically.

So this is obviously a bit of a tricky pickle to approach, but I'll try to do my best. From the top, nothing here is meant as a personal attack.

Honestly though, I measure people's words through their intent. We aren't always eloquent people, especially when presented in stressful situations (such as dying in a video game), so what we mean to say and what we actually say are usually vastly different things. Considering everyone here seems aware they are merely venting frustration and not actually cursing any deities, it does seem a little strange to take offense to it. Truth of the matter is, wanting anyone (much less a group of people) to completely change part of their vernacular that is hard-wired in is next to impossible. What certainly is more realistic is a change in one's self though. If something bothers you, find the root of it, and try to understand what you can do to remove the hurt. Only you control your reaction to the world around you and considering there is no ill intent in the curses exclaimed, it may be best to just try to avoid taking offense in just the first place.

The one thing I will poke a bit of a hole in though is that posting something here under the comments and feedback section does mean you expect or would like a change, otherwise you wouldn't post it at all. Maybe a few of the Allies will see this and make an honest effort to do better, but that phrase is going to exist in the world and I guarantee you'll hear it hundreds of more times. If you can make peace with that, you may be happier in the long run.

I'm no expert in who you are, I can only say what works personally for me. Living in a very Christian-centric society, I can't count the number of times I've been told I'm going to hell or I'm wrong for my lack of belief. Even though those are obviously much more targeted statements, I still just let them bounce off of me because I'm very comfortable with my lifestyle and even though the approach of the people making those statements is severely misguided, I do realize it comes from a place of good intent.

I will admit though, I've become so desensitized to cursing, I hadn't even realized they've been saying any of the above - or at least not frequently.

Inspired by Huber's massive list and the gaming resolutions discussed in the most recent podcast, I figured it'd be fun if we had a community list of games we've completed throughout this year. It should be simple enough, but I'll put a little explanation into it.

Just simply comment on this thread with a list of games you've completed/finished throughout the year. The game doesn't need to be released in 2018, nor did you have to start playing it this year, just something you got to the end of/saw credits for. Once you complete another game, just edit your previous comment instead of adding another. Let's try to avoid getting into longform discussions of thoughts and impressions of the games themselves (tons of threads here for that) and instead just focus on our lists themselves.

Bonus werehogs to the person with the longest list at the end of the year!
