    • The 4K TV thread

Inspired by the recent Talking Syndromes and my own scramble through the minefields of 4K TV shopping, I thought we could have a thread to help people who are thinking of buying a new TV.

The two most important things to look for when buying a 4k TV are:

      • HDR10: It's important to note that a lot of TVs claim to have HDR but it's only HDR8. reddit has a list of TVs that are HDR10: https://www.reddit.com/r/PS4/comments/5258ac/a_compiled_list_of_4k_uhd_tvs_that_support_hdr_10/

      • Latency: Arguably the most important thing to look for. High latency can absolutely ruin your gaming experience. The above list also tells you the latency of each model. How high is too high? Personally I wouldn't want to go much past 50ms (that's 1/20th of a second delay). Of course, if you're a MLG Street Fighter V player then you're probably going to need something a lot quicker. If you are in that category I would actually recommend shopping for a 4K monitor instead.

Of course there are other more factors to consider based on personal tastes. How important are Smart TV features to you? What is your budget? What will your viewing angle typically be? How many HDR capable devices will you be hooking up? While most TVs have 3-4 HDMI slots, only HDMI2.0 is capable of transmitting HDR content. So if you have multiple devices capable of producing HDR, make sure to check how many of those slots are HDMI2.0. Otherwise you'll have to be constantly switching out cables or buying a spliter.

Obviously reviews will need to be read to find out those finer details and find the ideal TV for your situation. But at least you can narrow it down with the required HDR and latency specs. www.rtings.com is your best place for reviews. They are super-comprehensive about every aspect of a TV.

My personal recommendation? The Sony X800D (known as the XD8088 in the UK just to make 4k shopping more confusing). Amazon UK started their Black Friday sales early and I got this TV for £600. It meets all the required specs for 4KHDR gaming and looks great. Playing Watchdogs 2 on PS4Pro is astounding to me. I can almost feel the warmth when I step out of a building into the San Francisco sun. While I'm sure other TVs do look better, they're all over the £1000 mark. So if you're looking for 4K gaming on a budget, this dominates the lower-mid end of the market. I'm not sure where Blooworth's idea that Sony TVs have a lot of latency issues came from. I've had no issues with X800D. Even when I switched it out of "game mode" to see if I could get a better picture, I didn't notice any kind of lag. Reviews have complained that image quality drops if you're viewing the TV at an angle and the sound isn't the greatest (neither of these are a problem to me - I always view the TV dead-on and I'm normally using headphones). So for that reason I can't make a blanket statement of "this is the TV you should buy" because like I said; everyone has their own personal situation and preferences.

I'd love for anyone who's already purchased a 4TV to offer their opinions here. Maybe we can get some recommendations for different price points.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that the reddit HDR10 list is actually missing the Hisense 2016 models. They're probably the cheapest HDR10 capable models on the market and have low latency so you should probably at least check reviews if you have a particularly tight budget.

    • RE: PSVR Hype???

      @petetropolis

My PSVR experience echoes yours. When I first put it on I had trouble getting it to feel "right". It felt like I was always just a minor adjustment away from making the screen completely crisp. Eventually I had to settle for what I could manage and load up a game. That game happened to be Driveclub VR. The SECOND after I had navigated the menus and was placed into the world, my issues with the screen were gone. For those who don't know, when you start Driveclub VR, you're not behind the wheels of a Ferrari, or watching cars drive around at 100+ MPH. You're just standing at the side of a race track. That alone blew my mind. I WAS standing at the side of that racetrack. For the first time in my life I had a presence in a digital world.

Arkham VR is probably my favorite title so far. It definitely helped that I didn't know much about it before going in. There's some real surprises in there.

Playstation Worlds hasn't been reviewing well but I feel it's possibly the best demonstration of VR for non-gamers. I let my mum "play" The Deep and she nearly fell out of her chair and yelled "Don't let me fall in!" with genuine fear when the shark attacked her. If Sony had packed this in with the headset then it could of had the potential to be the "Wii Sports" of PSVR.

The only time I felt any kind of sickness was when I played RIGS. there's a specific mech class that focuses on verticallity and has you jumping/hovering around the arenas constantly. I couldn't even complete that mech's training mode without feeling dizzy, and feeling extremely hot. Every other game (and even the rest of RIGS) has been fine though.

Overall I feel like Sony has nailed it. Having the cheapest headset while still having the tech be "good enough" was a real narrow sweet spot to hit but they've done it. I'm sure you could line up PSVR with Occulus and Vive and see all the ways it falls short, but 99% of people aren't going to be in that position. Most people are going to go to a friend's house, see that they have PSVR set up, try it out and be amazed by it. My only concern is that even though it is the cheapest headset, it's still a lot of money to spend. I made comparisons to the Wii earlier, the difference between that and PSVR is that that only cost $250 and included EVERYTHING you needed to play it. That's a much easier sell to a casual/non-gamer than "$399, but you'll also need to buy a PS4 if you don't have one, a camera, 2 Move controllers and some games"

    • RE: Are you Playstation Experienced... Again?

I can't go (living in the UK) but I'm so pumped for the show.

Sony skipped doing a Gamescom or Paris Games Week press conference this year. I reckon they're saving the announcements so PSX can rival the E3 show. All killer, no filler!

I'm also hoping for some kind of PSVR support. How cool would it be for Sony to bring a 360° camera to the event and let us watch in VR?

    • RE: What games are you still planning on buying this year?

      Mafia 3
      Dragon Quest Builders
      CoD: Infinite Warfare
      Rise Of The Tomb Raider
      Watch Dogs 2
      The Last Guardian
      Final Fantasy XV
      World Of Final Fantasy
      Pokemon Sun/Moon

I'm also buying PSVR but haven't decided what games I'm getting for that yet (other than Driveclub VR because it's going cheap for season pass holders).

    • RE: What games are going to Shrek? (podcast game)

Far Cry. Or any series that fits Ubisoft's "taking over towers/outposts in an open-world" mold. That whole genre (or sub-genre I guess) needs to start doing something new. Horizon's scenario looks so cool but if the core gameplay is what I just described without any new twists, I think a lot of people are going to be disappointed.

Edit: Also, the Arkham series. Rocksteady is very wise to leave the series now because it really feels like they've done everything they can and the series has run its course. My fear is that Warner Bros. are still going to keep churning them out by passing them on to a B-Team like WB Montreal.

I tranquilized this guard in MGSV and he fell face first into a pool of water. The Zs hovered over his head for about 10 seconds and then stopped. It ruined my pacifist run but I love that attention to detail.

Edit: Also Destiny has some cool touches. These Omolon weapons work by firing a special gel at high velocity. You can see the gel in the "magazine" sloshing about as you move and see it deplete as you fire..

    • Bojack Horseman

Season 3 hit Netlix yesterday and I binge-watched the entire thing. All I can say is HOLY CRAP!

Obviously I wont spoil anything but I will say it's definitely the best season so far. Everybody gets a story arc this year (even Todd). By the end of the series, everyone is in a different place than they were when they started, Highlights include episode 4 (by far the most unique episode they've ever done and something that would never happen on network television. Episode 11 features the best double-fake-out I've ever seen. There's also a fantastic pay-off in Episode 12 for a seemingly throwaway gag from Episode 1.

    • RE: Sonic The Hedgehog 25th anniversary party

Wow. That stream was... something. I don't know why they had Hyper Potions up on stage at the beginning. They clearly weren't doing anything other than letting their music play from a spotify playlist while they pretended to occasionally press some buttons.

The game announcements were cool. Sonic Mania is essentially the real Sonic 4. I'm disappointed the trailer for Project 2017 was just CG. The game has been in development for three years at this point, I would hope they have something showable by now. I also wonder if Classic Sonic will cut it now that we have Mania with PROPER classic physics.

    • Sonic The Hedgehog 25th anniversary party

On Friday 22nd SEGA is hosting a 25th anniversary party for Sonic and livestreaming it on twitch (https://www.twitch.tv/sonicofficial). The main reason to watch is the promise of a new game reveal that they've been teasing for over 4 months now.

SEGA's been making a lot of comments over the past year about how they're trying to focus more on quality rather than hitting release windows so it will be interesting to see what they show. The last mainline Sonic game SEGA themselves worked on was Lost World which came out in 2013 so they've a had a long time to work on this.

Edit: And it's already been fixed. I've got the game in my download queue so it will be interesting to see if I can play it.

I'll be amazed if that trophy bet moves past 0.1%. It doesn't seem like it would be something that's obvious to do in game unless you were specifically going for the plat.

    • RE: Hidden gem game recommendations

      alt text

I'm going to recommend a game called ADIOS - Amazing Discoveries In Outer Space. It's tucked well away on the PSN store (PS4). Judging by the leaderboards and trophy tracker sites I don't think the game has sold too well which is a shame because I really liked it and it doesn't cost too much (I got it on sale but even at full price I don't think it's more than $10.

The elevator pitch is "Spelunky: In Spaaaaaaaaaace". Each level is a randomly generated solar system and you have to make enough discoveries in each one (by finding things of interest and useful materials) before you can "warp drive" to the next system.

Your success depends entirely on your fuel reserves - it's used for everything; moving your ship about, repairing it when it inevitably gets damaged and even powers your personal jetpack when you have to land on planets and scavenge independently from your ship. If you run out of fuel, it's game over. What this creates is an excellent risk/reward system. You may spot a planet in the current system that seems to have a lots of discoveries and fuel reserves BUT it's currently under attack from a barrage of meteors, or orbiting dangerously close to its' sun. If you can pull this off you'd have enough fuel to last the next two or even three systems. But you're also putting yourself in incredible danger; one stray meteor finding its way onto your orbit path and you're going to end up like a bug in a windshield.

Learning to measure those risks/rewards will help you advance further into the game but you also need to learn complete mastery of your spaceship. The amount of fuel you can waste with sloppy entry/exiting of planet atmospheres' is huge. If you cut your landing path too thick you're going to come into a very hard landing (which will cost fuel to repair - or kill you outright), cut your entry too thin and you'll slingshot straight out of orbit and have to waste a large amount of fuel just getting yourself slowed down and turned around again (assuming you weren't slingshot straight into the sun of course).

If I had any gripes I would say I don't particularly like the art style. It looks cheap. I know you could argue that's because the game IS cheap, but scrolling through the PSN store you'd almost be forgiven for thinking this was a flash game ported from Newgrounds. The game is also missing the awesome power-ups you could get in Spelunky. There are items you can find to upgrade your ship for the current run but none of them feel like they'll significantly help your run if you find them. In Spelunky, stumbling on the jetpack or climbing gloves early on can completely change that playthrough. But I guess ADIOS lacking this doesn't hurt it too much considering the unpredictable nature of space travel gives each run a unique feel anyway.

If Kyle reads this, I'd love for you to stream it. I know you like rummaging through the shadows of PSN to find hidden gems like this.

I lost all my Pokémon stored in Pokemon Colosseum along with my chao gardens and all 180 emblems from Sonic Adventure 2: Battle.

It taught me a valuable lesson about third party memory cards. They may be cheaper but it's never worth it.
