    • RE: Help me understand the hype about superhero movies

So I can only really speak to the MCU, not the DC stuff.

The first thing that's worth noting that the MCU is basically a soap opera but with superpowers (I would argue the same is true of the comics). And as with any soap opera, it only works if you like the majority of the characters, and so care about them. Much like the Spider-man and Batman animated series you watched as a kid, actually.

Secondly I think it's worth remembering that these aren't smart intellectual movies. They're dumb fun of the very best kind. Big bright colourful smile-inducing fun. Don't expect anything ground breaking.

So I think the "I feel like it's the same thing over and over again" can be a problem. Especially if you're watching the first movie in each characters series. Iron Man 1, Cap 1, Spiderman 1, Batman Begins, etc. These are all stories that are telling us how someone becomes the superhero that we know and love, establishing who they are. They all have the same basic pattern. Them getting powers (or having a need to build a suit or whatever), finding a bad guy/thing that needs defeating, and finding the strength within themselves to defeat the bad, whilst learning who they really are in the process.
To see what they can be once you get past that, maybe try Captain America: The Winter Soldier. I think that's a very different kind of movie in taking Cap and then putting seeing what he does in this tough place. Just The Dark Knight took the Batman established in Batman Begins and then starts seeing how this guy reacts rather than establishing a baseline. Looking at the animated series you mentioned I think it's interesting they don't even start with origin stories, they just jump into the soap opera of it all.

Finally, I think it's fine not to like them. It may not be that you're missing anything that would make them click for you, just that they aren't your kind of stuff. And that's fine. There is nothing wrong with missing out on things you don't enjoy.

      Valiant Hearts: The Great War

I picked this up on the PSN Easter Sale for just £3 just to see what it was like. The puzzles were good fun, and if ever you get stuck for too long there is an optional hint just to give you a nudge in the right direction. The story is emotional, particularly for Emile and Karl. I would have liked more resolution to Freddy's section, and maybe it did the "They're dead... not really" thing too many times. It was refreshing to see a war game that wasn't "Shoot all the bad guys, isn't this fun!" but was a more reflective look at the horror and hardships that war brings to people's lives. If you're at all interested, I would suggest keeping an eye on it, if it's been that cheap once, it'll be that cheap again, and it's a really interesting game.

      Alien Isolation

I felt like I was tense for every moment of this game. Right up until the alien appeared and resulting in me jumping clean off my seat, panicking and then dying. And I loved it for that. It felt like it had the right balance between helplessness and being able to fight back, against the androids, people, and eventually with the flamethrower against the alien itself. It's wonderfully atmospheric and pays due respect to the first (and best) movie.
It does have it's faults though: it's a couple of hours too long, there is a loop in the story of trying to do things and it failing for whatever reason that only serve to extend the story rather than add anything, a couple of the jumps were so signposted as to become boring, and I noticed a surprising amount of glitches.
      Overall I loved it.

    • RE: Opening Cinematics

Tales of Zestiria's opening was amazing. It's not often I'll watch the opening cinematic every time I load up a game, but I did for that.

      Recently I've been enjoying FFXIV's opening: https://youtu.be/1mRzWLRWOXc

Alono's 5th would have been a 7th if Haas had managed to successfully complete a pit stop.

I don't quite get how Haas released the cars but also instantly knew that they had messed up. I would have thought they'd have a system that stopped the front jack man lowering the car before the guys on tyres were ready.

I think Bottas and Verstappen were the big losers from Melbourne. If it's going to be three teams fighting for the championship you can't afford to let the likes of Alonso and Hulkenburg take points from you.

I'm so happy F1 is back, race weekends are the best weekends.

    • RE: What is your favourite Point & Click Adventure game?

The first one I ever really loved was Full Throttle. It's great fun, even if some of puzzles are ludicrously convoluted.

As to more recent ones, things that have already been mentioned like Life Is Strange and Until Dawn. I also enjoyed Broken Age quite a lot.

    • RE: The EZA Community Top 25 Best of 2014!

I can't remember what I eventually gave my top spot to, but it could well have been Child Of Light.
I adored the fairy tale feel, I loved the flying around, the combat system was good and interesting. I cared about the cast of characters. I was a little emotional at the ending.

But mostly I love the soundtrack, I listen to it all the time. It's haunting and beautiful.

I'm delighted it made the list.

    • RE: [Official] What are you playing?

Three years after I gave up, I've gone back to The Witcher 3. I wasn't an open world guy then, the freedom was overwhelming. But since then I've played and enjoyed FFXV, Horizon, Just Cause 3, Infamous: Second Son. So I thought I'd give it another go.
I can't say yet if I'll stick with it this time, but I am enjoying where I've got to.

    • RE: Parents/Aunts/Uncles/Friends of Parents: Favourite Game Moments with Kids in Your Life

Me and my son (who was 5 at the time) played through Knack together in co-op. As games go it was perfect for him.

Lego Dimensions was good fun for a while.

My youngest son (just turned 3) wanted a go on the PS3 recently. So I put Super Stradust HD on for him. He got the general idea, but he only pushed the sticks up, left or right. Never down. So when the asteroid was at the bottom of the screen he would turn the controller upside down, that way when he pushed up the ship flew down. So the co troller was constantly rotating in his hand making the game far harder than it should have been.

      Deus EX: Mankind Divided
      Metal Gear Solid V
      Bloodborne
      Mad Max

All 4 were recent PS+ games that I had been interested in but not sure of. All 4 were fun for a little while but I didn't enjoy them enough to stick with them for one reason or another. I can't remember where I got on Deus Ex. MGS I got as far as not being in Pakistan anymore, but in a jungle. Bloodborne I got to the second boss. Mad Max I met someone called Pink Eye.

I think the fact that I put £0 down on these games makes it easier to leave them unfinished.

    • RE: [Official] What are you playing?

@Sentinel-Beach I played it. There is a main area with a shop and a tower on it that is sort of the centre of the world. And as you transform into different animal forms you gain the ability to head in different directions. If you can suddenly go in a direction that was previously blocked to you, then that's the way to go.
I've never played the '89 version but I found it difficult enough that I never finished it. I got to the final boss, but no matter what I did, or how many times I tried I never even got close to defeating it. The game isn't long, but it didn't feel insultingly short either.

      The soundtrack is superb.

I'm still going at The Witcher 3. Although I think I'm heading towards the end of that given the current main quest is called Final Preparations.

However Ni No Kuni II is the deal of the week on the playstation store this week. So I've just started that as well... only put an hour in but if it's even half as good as the first I'm gonna love it.
